The Force Awakens: Official Review Thread - ** SPOILERS **

I am getting a bit tired of this thread being more about bashing the people commenting on it than about the films and the comments themselves.
Some people hold opinions about the film that some people don’t share.
Get over it.

I’ve kept out of this conversation for a long time but when someone brings up shit articles from a bigoted website like Return of Kings, I’m not going to not call them out on it.

For the last time, he’s one of them…

Me too. She and Ackbar had a torrid love affair in the early days of the Rebellion.

Dude, so many people had haircuts like that in the 70’s. What gets me every time with that character is the astroturf beard. They just glued that thing on his face half an hour before his scene. Somebody cut it out of a sheet of felt from the craft store down the street because they ran out of fake hair.

Return of The Jedi was filmed in the 80’s. Madine could be related to the species Harvey Korman played the HS though. 😉

and he said that his lightsaber got destroyed by Rey

This is the first time I read about someone else noticing this, too. It happens when Rey forces Kylo’s saber into the snow, immediatly after it is deactivated you see something fly away. Really hard to make it out, but most probably, it’s his saber.

I noticed this on first viewing actually, but always forget about it. Didn’t see “something fly away,” but Rey slams down with her lightsaber right on Kylo’s hilt and there’s a sound that makes it definitely seem like his saber has been destroyed.

It’ll be interesting to see if his V2 saber will be a different. I hope not too much so, I love how the saber perfectly reflected his character (but then, I guess his character will be a bit different next time around?).

In what ways did TFA completely nail it, either in terms of filmmaking or in terms of continuity?

There were a lot of great themes in the film. This was the only one you liked??

Yep. Half of the themes were remakes of the older ones, while I didn’t find very moving the new ones.

Did you even listen to the soundtrack? I’m honestly having a hard time comprehending this.

Here are the new themes:
Rey’s theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=65As1V0vQDM
Kylo Ren’s theme (at 4:20): https://youtu.be/y8ac1Qg-r-8?t=4m18s
Kylo Ren’s secondary theme (at 0:13): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUs88IY1A00
Finn’s theme (at 1:11): https://youtu.be/VLipUMfiiC8?t=1m
Poe Dameron’s theme (at 1:18): https://youtu.be/cHJrfB7VquM?t=1m14s
The Resistance’s theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ueqKtype7Kk
The Jedi steps theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cUBUlKgsNK8

Of those (brilliant) new themes, the only one that I think even vaguely sounds like a remake is Kylo Ren’s, but that makes sense narratively.

Seriously, the fact that you think not one of those is worth liking and you instead prefer a small bit at the start of the film that isn’t even a theme makes me think you are just being purposefully contrarian on this point.

The Visual Effects of The Force Awakens (Spoilers)
Time

The visual effects were fantastic. Just goes to show how engaging the story and characters are and how well JJ directed the film that, even though there are plenty of shots that are completely CGI (like the prequels), I’ve heard nary a complaint (I’ve probably jinxed it though). Because he made the environments feel real and didn’t use CG when he didn’t have to.

I’m very curious to see how far Rian brings the practical effects, though. He did a Q&A with Christopher Nolan on Interstellar and they talked about how Nolan used next to zero CG. Johnson joked he was taking notes for VIII. We’ll see how much truth there was to that next year.

FWIW, I almost cheered when Maz declined to explain the lightsaber.

Same. Would anyone have actually wanted an explanation? No, people would have complained about that eve more so.

Yes, the circumstances that would lead to Rey discovering the lightsaber in Maz’s castle are hard to believe. We all know that. But that’s what makes it so magical. Of all the gin joints…

While reading about TFA’s nomination, I found this. It seems like TFA is in a way “more equal than other” movies 😄

That was pretty silly but it’s their own fault for giving out awards before the year is even over and every movie’s been seen.

Are you saying it’s fine to change the rules just for one single movie in 21 years? O.o

 1. It’s happened before (Cast Away in 2001).
 2. It’s ridiculous that a movie that was released in what is supposedly their eligibility period (the calendar year) wasn’t initially under consideration because they decided to vote before the year was over and they had seen all the movies.
 3. Yes I do think the rules should change but I think what should change is that they should stop trying to be the first to predict the Oscars and move their nominations back.
 4. The Critic’s Choice Awards are a joke anyway.

Star Wars at box office
Time

I read somewhere that Avatar had the advantage of exchange rates that were 10-15% better. That’s probably the main reason. At least TFA beat it in the US.

Regarding Gone With the Wind’s all time adjusted record, it will never be beat. Simply put, for 40+ years following Gone With the Wind’s initial release there was no such thing as home video, so the only way for people to see it was in theaters. Indeed, GWTW made most of its money from rereleases. That doesn’t even get into the fact of modern internet piracy and the fact that in a few months TFA will be on Blu-Ray, DVD, iTunes, Amazon, Youtube, HBO, torrent sites, etc.

But TFA’s run will be impressive when adjusted for inflation. In fact, it already is. Right now it’s sitting at 15th place all time adjusted, ahead of every Star Wars film save the first two (though it will overtake ESB in a few days). When all is said and done, it has a chance to make it into the top 10, which is VERY impressive.

The Force Awakens: Official Review Thread - ** SPOILERS **
Time

For what it’s worth, Academy Award nominations are decided by industry professionals AKA the cream of the crop in each branch. So the people who nominated TFA for Best Editing were editors (not just that, but some of the very best in the business).

And an editing nomination for a blockbuster is rare. It’s only the second Star Wars film after the original to get one.

The movie also got four other nominations, for those who were wondering.

"From Star Wars to Jedi The Making of a Saga" - now in HD (Released)
Time

Awesome work! Was watching this doc a few weeks back and thought how cool it’d be to see it with the HD film clips inserted, and here it is! Nicely done.

I’d be interested to see how far this could be taken. Thoughts on how to make the ultimate version of this:

 • I agree that the pillar boxing should probably stay as black bars.
 • I’d probably remove the ad at the start too. It’s not really a part of the doc proper.
 • I think it’d be really cool to see the text graphics redone in HD (the titles and also the credits so you can replace those images with HD ones).
 • I’d love to see what improvements the LD transfer has. That’d be great.
 • If any of these clips are available in other HD or SD (on the Blu-ray or DVD) fit them in.

Again, great job.

Now when is someone going to do this for Empire of Dreams and The Legacy Revealed?
