TFA: A Gentle Restructure (Released)

And in the latest video the music cut after “Give it everything you got” is quite noticeable.

Yes. Structurally, I think this reordering is a very good thing. But, there is no wiggle room on either side to allow much crossfading. I will experiment with using the soundtrack to buffer it, if I can.

Worth noting that the part of the soundtrack that plays during this portion (with the X-wings before the trench run) is found in the For Your Consideration tracks on “The Attack on the Jakku Village Part 1” at around 2:49. Shouldn’t be too hard to let that bit play out as you cut to Rey and Finn and try to transition there.

By the way, anyone editing this movie should absolutely have the original soundtrack and the FYC tracks. Or really just everyone should have them - this score is amazing!

Maybe replace the opening crawl?

Already suggested that myself earlier but decided it wouldn’t be a good fit.

Any particular reason? I think the joke only really makes sense if there’s supposed to be text there. We expect the crawl to say something (as we expect posts to say something), so putting the Markdown syntax there would seem (I think) to be the best fit for the joke (that and subtitles being the only place in the SW saga where we typical read things - literally never read words on screens because of the different alphabet).

If you already have something planned for the crawl, you could easily start it with the Markdown syntax, then have a “JEDIT:” and move on to whatever else.

Yep. The symmetry is part of it but I think the main reason it looks off is because the head is much to small for the helmet. Now, I don’t necessarily mind the smaller head, given it’s not supposed to be the same suit as in SW, but they could have at least changed the helmet too (could have been narrower - might have been a cool look). As is, it just looks kind of silly.

Even Shadows of the Empire has been erased ? It was such a huge thing in the 90’s (book, comics, soundtrack album, video games, action figures, etc.)…

Yeah, I don’t get it either. It makes no references to any post ROTJ Legends stories (e.g Thrawn, Ben Skywalker, etc.), nor has it any connection to any pre-existing EU stories, so it was pretty much made to be it’s own unique stand-alone story. Disney/Marvel/Lucasfilm could save a lot of time and money filling in the ANH-ESB gap by simply re-canonizing or re-telling Shadows of the Empire. It would also calm down the whole “bring back the EU” crowd somewhat, and it wouldn’t in any way contradict the new movies. Then again I haven’t read any of the new books or comics, so maybe it does contradict something? Has any of the new EU material taken place in his time-period?

It’s actually really easy to get.

The EU was rebooted in 2014. Anything that came before was declared noncanon, anything after, canon. There was no picking and choosing. The one holdover was TCW which was grandfathered in because they had new episodes out that year.

The idea was a clean slate, not just for new movies, but also for new comics and books and etc. (with the perhaps silly hope that things will actually be consistent from now on).

So while I don’t think anything has been set in that time period yet, there definitely will be things that mine that span. So canonizing SOTE would not be saving them any money, it’d be costing them the potential money they could make with replacement stories.

Also, I just bought a ticket for a screening of Lawrence of Arabia at one of my favorite independent theaters tomorrow night. Can’t wait. I saw it on the big screen a few years back when the 50th anniversary restoration came out, but that’s a movie that I’ll go see as often as theaters want to show it.

Coolidge Corner? Damn, I haven’t checked their schedule in awhile and already made plans for tonight. Maybe next time (I did already see it a couple years back at the Brattle though). Lawrence of Arabia is one of my all time favorites.

Yep, love the Coolidge. I used to live close enough to walk, I saw Breathless and Metropolis there that year.

Nice. Coolidge might be my number one favorite theater actually. I’ve been living close enough to walk but not really a convenient distance (about a half hour). I’ve sort of wanted to be closer but I fear it’d ruin my bank account.

As is, I don’t go to nearly as many old movies there as I’d like. Though I did catch Jaws and Back to the Future there last year so I guess I can’t complain.

Here’s actually a really good talk on the subject from one of my favorite comedians, Paul F. Tompkins.

Basically, people don’t necessarily get mad at jokes certain topics because joking about them is inherently offensive, usually they’re just mad because the joke isn’t funny and is only hurtful and done to provoke outrage.

The Force Awakens : Fan Edit Ideas
Time

I’ve said it a million times but finding Luke IS the conclusion to the story.

Actually, TFA stands pretty well on its own without the others (lot of new fans have seen TFA first). There are a few more loose ends at the end than say ANH (Kylo, Snoke, Hux, Finn vs. Vader) but finding Luke is not one (insane to me that people think removing meeting Luke is somehow getting rid of a cliffhanger when it’s actually making one where there wasn’t one before).

If someone wanted to make the film more standalone, it’d be pretty simple. Change the crawl, trim the Han stuff, do something different with the Force vision, and remove Snoke telling Hux to get Ren (and therefor imply his death and the possible destruction of the First Order). Might be an interesting little edit.

Celebration Europe poster:

Hmm, why does all the conventions get all the cool classic-style posters while the theatres end up with those generic photoshops?

Marketing reasons, I’m sure. If nothing else, it’s cheaper to pay some intern to photoshop some promotional images together and bash out a poster in fifteen minutes than it is to pay someone like Drew Struzan and then have to wait for a few weeks.

I HIGHLY doubt “some intern” did the poster photoshop job for the most anticipated movie of all time (TFA). Lot of time was put into that.

As Lucas always intended the ST be made this decade (per a quote from Mark Hammil about episode 7 coming out in 2011), that means a long gap between trilogies so holding the revelation of “the other” until the ST makes no sense. He got the fans buzzing after Empire so it makes sense his plan was always to reveal the other in Jedi. Why make them wait for 30 years.

This (like many things you’re saying) is simply not true. Lucas’s original intent was well, a lot of different things when it came to the sequels, but basically a 12 episode saga, each directed by different people except the first and last. This morphed and fluctuated with the 9 episode saga and such. The other was definitely supposed to be the subject of episode 7. Lucas decided while developing ROTJ that he was tired of the saga and wanted to tie it up (though knew he’d get back to it later).

The idea of Luke as an Obi-Wan 30 years later wasn’t decided until after ROTJ was developed. Notice that Hamill’s remarks about episode 7 in 2011 is from an interview in 1984.

Of course I’m generalizing a lot, but that’s definitely the “rethinking the prequels” generation, i.e. “What can we pretend the prequels succeeded in by using everything but the films themselves as evidence.”

All squares are rectangles but not all rectangles are squares. Most PT apologists are millennials because they grew up with them (though there are older ones who can’t get past the George’s vision BS) but most millennials still realize the PT is shit (as do most people).

Me and all my friends grew up with the PT. Most of them have a soft spot for it, sure. Not a single one considers it even close to the level of the OT. In fact, I haven’t met a person in real life that prefers the PT since I was on the playground in the sixth grade.

Also, I think many don’t realize that the millennial generation is usually considered to start early to mid eighties and end mid to late nineties. So a lot of us (me included) saw the OT first anyway.

Fair enough, though I feel “timeline” and continuity in general mean very little in this series.

Well Craig uses some gadgets which he aquired in previous movies.

So yeah, as far as we know, the bond movies are one linear timeline.

Eh, not at all. Casino Royale was clearly a reboot. He wasn’t even a double-0 at the beginning. There’s certainly continuity within the Connery films, within the Brosnan films, within the Craig films. But no sense of continuity between these eras in the series.

I tend to think each time there’s a new Bond it’s a reboot. Some are just softer reboots than others.

Sure, but ever since I was a child I’ve always liked thinking that the first 20 films are all part of one singular timeline.

EDIT: I guess there weren’t 20 yet when I first started thinking this, but you know what I meant.

I’ve always had sort of a hard time wrapping my head around the idea that all these Bonds are along the same timeline, even as a kid (maybe harder for me because there was 20 films and therefor more to reconcile).

Does anyone here have any recommendations on where to find reasonably-priced NES, SNES, and N64 cartridges online? Ebay has poor selection and everyone selling thinks their copy of Kung Fu is worth $25. Is there a discogs-type website for old video games?

Honestly your best bet is offline. They’re not commonplace but if you can find a store that sells old video games, that’s probably where you’ll find the best price.

I’m transgenerational.

I know this is supposed to be a joke but transgenerational is a legitimate term for someone born around the end of one generation and the beginning of another (and thus could conceivably be classified in either).

That’s obviously still pretty silly, though. But I suppose fitting people into generations is pretty silly anyway.

For instance, going off Wikipedia, I could reasonably be considered a Millennial or a Plural, depending on who you ask. But Millennials supposedly date back to the early 80s, and Plurals date as recently as present day. My life experiences (due mainly to technology) are so vastly different from a say someone who’s 30 right now and someone who’s 4 right now that it’s hard to say I really fit with either. It’s all kind of dumb, really.

I feel validated seeing that the ROTS score doesn’t do it for the last couple of posters. I seriously can’t get my head around why it’s so revered here.

SAME. It’s simply the worst.*

Also when can we all agree to stop judging a score based on how memorable it is (whatever that even means anyway)?

*of the SW scores that is which means it’s still great because John Williams.
