To Duracell,

I’m wondering if a title change might be in order for your thread here. What good is a politics thread if most every conversation only starts or ends with President Trump bashing?

There will be little if any reasonable discourse now that he has been Inaugurated. Just a thought anyways.

What are you suggesting? He change the title to the “bash Trump” thread? You don’t even think we should try reasonable discourse? I don’t get it.

I don’t see reasonable discourse being had, just Trump bashing, hence the suggestion.

Reasonable facts about Trump are being brought up. If you want a discourse, start one. It’s not our fault a lot of us agree Trump is doing a shit job, but it’s not like we’re saying unreasonable stuff like “Trump’s a meany poopy head.” Sorry that we don’t have anything to say about Trump that isn’t a bash. I’d blame him.

What happened to the Myth?

To me, the Disney films have done a great job bringing back the mythic and mystical elements of the OT. It was the prequels that stomped all over that.

But in TFA we have Maz Kanata who is no Jedi, but is more of a force mystic. You’ve got that awesome speech by Han (it’s true… All of it.). You’ve got the Knights of Ren, whatever they are. And Rey goes on a hero’s quest to find Luke.

In Rogue One you’ve got the holy city Jedha. You’ve got monks who worship the Jedi and the force. You’ve got tarkin (I think it was, certainly one of the imperials) mention “Saw Guerrera and his Bendu fanatics”. You’ve got the kyber crystals.

To me, the mythic and mystical aspects of Star Wars to hand in hand. And, quite frankly, under Disney the new films are delivering in spades.

Agreed.

They didn’t cooperate with him, but they didn’t walk out on him.

I am just talking about walking out on one speech. But no, I don’t think they should cooperate with him. I think they should fight him. I think they should filibuster like crazy. At least filibuster any attempt to repeal Obamacare. Also filibuster any attempt to confirm an Supreme Court nominee until Merrick Garland(Obama’s Supreme Court nominee) gets an up or down vote. Or perhaps filibuster any Trump nominee for a length of time equaling the time from date of the nomination of Merrick Garland to the end the Obama Presidency. Send a message.

I still think that would embarrass them much more than it would help. The populace loved it so much when Republicans were impossible under Obama.

It got them Congress and the White House, didn’t it?

If you ask me, at Trump’s first address to the the both house the Dems should walk out as soon as he gets to the podium.

That kind of behavior would be great for Trump. It would dramatically shift public opinion to his favor.

I don’t think so.

If not a single Democrat was willing to do their job because the person they don’t like won the election, the Republicans would win even bigger majorities in the midterms.

I don’t seem to remember it being that way in 2010.

Thankful to have been flying today so I had an excuse to skip the national embarrassment celebration. Random guy in the airport put it best: “I’m glad I’ll be off planet earth when that asshole is sworn in.” Having been on a flight that went from one side of the country to the other, I can say with some certainty that at no point was the sun shining through to the ground. A whole nation overcast. Seems appropriate.

I’m going to be very interested to read these posts again in four years.

I still maintain that Trump will not turn out to be the next Hitler nor will he be the great savior. I think when it’s all said and done he will probably be a “meh” president with liberals upset that he wasn’t the catastrophe they rant and rave about and everyone who believed what he said upset that he failed to live up to 95% of his campaign promises.

I more or less agree with regards to Trump himself… I think he’s a bad person, but I doubt we’ll see anything truly groundbreaking one way or the other from him during his time in office (though we will continue to have at least one ridiculous drama or scandal or controversy per day). I’m more interested about his cabinet picks and the Republican-controlled congress.

The right wing has a chance to prove they know what they’re doing with regards to America, and we’ll see if they truly do (or not) in these coming years. They face very little opposition in congress and from the President as well as eventually the supreme court, so it’ll be interesting to see their agendas at (mostly uncontested) work.

Intersting is not the word I would use.

I see images like that and wonder how they are in the same universe as that quaint 70’s movie. You know, the one featuring a farmboy, a down-on-his-luck hot rod driver and his giant doglike sidekick, and a sassy Mexican Revolution styled princess.

It’s almost as if it’s a realistic depiction of a galaxy, where things are different depending on the location or time.

LOL. There’s nothing “different” about how Legacy portrayed anything.

To be honest, I haven’t read the Legacy comics, but I don’t get the idea that everything in a fictional universe has to resemble everything else.

It should at least be in the same spirit.

There’s an old vacuum commercial with Frank Sinatra (I think) dancing with a vacuum (or maybe it was Singing in the Rain Footage) that they made sometime after Forest Gump pioneered the technology of placing old actors (or JFK, in the case of Forest Gump) in new footage, so they’ve been at it for a while now.

It was Fred Astaire and a Dirt Devil and they got in a lot of trouble with his estate.

Uh, it was his estate that pimped him out while stiffing documentaries and other legit venues of even being able to use film clips of him. Moral of the story, don’t marry a control freak late in life who will whore out your likeness after you’re dead.

Well I’m screwed.

Sorry, have to pay the bills somehow.

The other clear influence, I believe, is high seas swashbuckling. As with other influences, it’s always been there in SW from the start, though I do believe in some ways it is more pronounced here.

I remember my first general impression of the score was that it sounds far more like classic pirate films than any of the other scores do, and I think that fits the tone of the film rather well.

The main character, Rey, is a scavenger, who salvages parts from beached shipwrecks. Finn definitely feels like a soldier who’s jumped ship and shacked up with pirates. Speaking of pirates - Han’s always been one, and that’s perhaps never been more true than in this film (where we see him board and capture his old ship, haul dangerous creatures from some far flung land for money, and end up with other pirates boarding his ship looking to collect on a number of debts). He later brings the crew to Takadonna, which yes is has castle, but 100% feels like a Tortuga type island refuge for pirates.

There political situation has parallels. There’s no one power that controls all of the galaxy (seas). I just watched The Sea Hawk recently and some of the similarities are striking. In it, the Spanish Empire has been taking over a great deal of land, with secret plans to eventually invade England (and take over the whole map). England and the Crown is “peaceful” with them, but the Sea Hawks (English privateers) have been attacking Spanish ships. The Queen is publicly dismissive of them, but covertly supports them. There’s even a section of the film that deals with finding a map!

Then there’s the end of the film. Rey finds Luke on an island, and indeed the whole planet feels very much like an island in uncharted waters. The trip to Ahch-to feels very much like a journey off to an unknown spot in the New World (even if the location is supposedly ancient).

If you’ve seen that interview, JJ is clearly joking (as he often does). Anyway, LFL’s new canon policy is pretty hardline and doesn’t and hasn’t allowed for people to randomly canonize old works (despite what Wikipedia might hope).

Still, canon is what you make of it. If you feel like the HS should be canon, go for it! Nothing wrong with personally seeing it that way. But the chances it is officially canon is very slim to almost definitely one. Not that any of that matters for Frink’s edit. And I have to say, I’m with him. HS? No thanks.

However, I really hated the CG Tarkin. The scenes with CG Tarkin, threw me out of the movie experience.
Unfortunately, he’s an important character and needed to be in the movie.
It sorta felt like a “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” Meets “Star Wars”, mixing Animation/CG with Live Action.

For me, Tarkin was one of the highlights of the film.

In all honesty, the CG of Tarkin is a good effort, but I just wish they didn’t go the CG route.
If there was a way to superimpose old Tarkin footage from Star Wars to match up with the scene.
I know that wouldn’t be perfect either, but they might’ve been able to pull that off a little better.
As long as they kept the scenes short.

Anyways, to each their own.

One this is for sure, CGI is way better than having a new actor (in terms of visual appearance). That never works, especially when it comes to well-established characters. I am pretty sure it will not work for Han Solo.

Well, if by “work” you mean he will not look or sound like Harrison Ford, then you are right. That doesn’t mean it won’t be good though. The worst thing they could have done for that film would have been to have the lead performance be a CGI Han Solo with an HF impersonator. I shiver at the thought of it.

That has what exactly to do with the Holiday Special? It is supposed to still be canon, and I stand by that until you provide proof other than various fan writings having been invalidated as we all know. Obviously we shouldn’t keep on that here, unless you have some concise example to offer.

Did you read that article? LFL’s new approach has always been very clear. New canon = episodes I-VI and TCW plus anything made from 2014 on. Where is exactly does the HS fit in there? I’d love to know.

Yes, I can and did read, it said it includes those things, not limited solely to them. I said, if you can come back with a concise example that mentions the Holiday Special specifically as part of the EU that got thrown out, that would be acceptable. If you just have speculation without much to back it up, let’s not muck up Frink’s Ridiculous thread with it.

While Lucasfilm always strived to keep the stories created for the EU consistent with our film and television content as well as internally consistent, Lucas always made it clear that he was not beholden to the EU. He set the films he created as the canon. This includes the six Star Wars episodes, and the many hours of content he developed and produced in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. These stories are the immovable objects of Star Wars history, the characters and events to which all other tales must align.

It said included and the very clear implication was that it was limited solely to them, and nothing they’ve said or done since then has suggested otherwise.

There is literally no reason at all to think that when they said this that they meant “these things are canon and the other stuff is not, except maybe the Holiday Special because everyone loves that one, right?” I honestly cannot fathom how you think a complete wiping of the EU which explicitly ditches all books, comics, video games, TV shows (besides TCW, as stated), and TV movies wouldn’t include ditching the Holiday Special.

Though I can’t find a concise “Holiday Special isn’t canon” answer offhand, I don’t see why I would need to. Common sense and everything we know about the EU wipe is on my side.
