Unusual Sequel Trilogy Radical Redux Ideas Thread
Time

I always found this to be a very interesting quote from Rian on the music in the scene:
https://www.reddit.com/r/StarWarsCantina/comments/buzzdo/french_interview_that_clarifies_how_rian_johnson/

I do wish Rian had requested a new theme for their relationship instead (the biggest musical missed opportunity all trilogy), but I get the reasoning for the Force theme, which is really the all encompassing ‘fate’ theme (and perhaps if it wasn’t used as much in that film it’d feel more momentous), and which is ultimately mirrored in the moment they join forces.

That said, I think your edit works really, really well, and makes for an excellent change.

Adding Rose’s theme to such a moment is brilliant. I’ve been trying to think of ways to do a dialogue change along those lines too.

Another thought occurred to me. There’s so many ways this movie could have done right by Rose, one of the ones I always thought would have been easy for them to do was when they’re trying to fix the Falcon’s landing gear have Finn say “Where’s Rose when you need her.” No idea if there’s any Boyega lines to accomplish this.

I love how an alien with literally no hands played the mechanic role aboard the Falcon when we already had a perfectly good mechanic character introduced in the last film.

Yeah but that character RUINED Star Wars.

It almost does feel like they were saying ‘literally anything would be better than Rose.’ It’s pretty fucked. There’s no acceptable answer for her role in the film.

(rough, as always)

 • New music
 • Extended reveal a bit (pushed back when Palpatine starts talking)
 • Cut out Rey being “not who she seems”
 • Cut to Rey meditating after, instead of the Falcon

I really enjoyed this even though I am not a strong advocate for Rey being changed to a nobody. However, I understand why many want this change and have loved viewing all your edits so far. Quick question, perhaps you have already answered this before. Do you plan on adding in Palpatine’s “Fortnite Speech” in this edit? I really like it and though this may be the scene to overlay it as we see the sith fleet rise from the ice.

Well it’s a tricky thing to use because of the music. I also think the idea of a ‘broadcast’ is weird and I don’t really like it. Ultimately I don’t think including it is necessary.

I think this might be the edit I am most excited about. My heart broke when they walked back on the whole Rey Nobody thing and I think your ideas could really bring that storyline back to the life.

I noticed you mentioned adding a score to the Death Star fight and a few people have thrown around the Duel of the Fates. I’ve seen a few fan edits of that scene that use both Duel of the Fates and Battle of the Heroes. Have you considered this?

I tend to think of that piece as being more specifically tied to Obi-wan and Anakin, so probably not.

The transition is something I was curious about. One of those things where you’re not sure if it only works because you’ve been looking at it so long. Will look into alternatives as it seems like it’s not working for people.

What’s your plan for Palpatine’s plan in the movie? Maybe I’m just slow but I never worked out why he asked Kylo to kill Rey. He clearly doesn’t actually want her dead; he wants her on Exegol so he can ritualistically bodysnatch her or whatever. What if Kylo had run Rey through and come back to claim his new fleet? Was Palps just banking on Kylo caring too much about Rey? Palpatine’s prequel plans were hardly airtight either, but I don’t really see what he actually wants from Kylo. Once they’re together he uses the dyad - was that his plan all along?

It’s a tricky thing because the obvious solution is have Palpatine tell Kylo to bring him Rey, but it makes Kylo’s story a lot less interesting. I suspect this is why they changed it to be the way it is. It’s pretty convoluted, but yeah there’s probably a couple different explanations, and arguably it’s on par with his 4D chess reverse psychology prequel plans. If someone can come up with an alternative I’m ears, but like I said the only one I can figure lessens Kylo’s story and agency.

Maybe it would work better if you kept the line where it was originally but just zoomed in on her enough to crop out her mouth and/or added more flashes of light obscuring it. Then as she says ‘no one’ you pull back and match it up to the existing camera move in that shot, essentially making the entire shot a more dramatic zoom.

An interesting idea. I tested it and it doesn’t not work, but I’m also not entirely sold. I’d certainly need a 4K file for the shot too because you need to zoom in at least 200% to make it work.

Yep, this assumes 4K material. I think it would be more in keeping with something that would have actually been filmed.

Like I said I’m not completely sold. That kind of shot is not completely alien to the series (Kenobi vs. Grevious comes to mind), but I’m not sure how cleanly it’d fit in.

It looks pretty good to me. The ‘I’m no one’ feels odd though, mostly due to it being in the center channel when she’s speaking the line off-camera.

I’ve been working on the mix since uploading, it was mostly a quick mockup. I’ve also retimed it a bit.

It might also be worth looking at other sources for ‘no one’ since it feels a bit less intense than her inflection in this scene. You could also try using the line ‘nobody’ from TLJ (‘They were nobody’).

It is less intense than the preceding line, but it is oddly not that less intense than what it replaced. I’ll definitely look for alternatives, but it’ll be a tricky line to frankenbite, you’d need to get it perfect since there’s no other sound to hide any less than perfect edits.

Here is a list of things I’m currently hoping to get from others for this project, to consolidate it all for the moment:

 • Fixed video for the ‘squeaky wheel’ scene (be it FX wizardry to remove puppetry or cropping while processing the rough video and removing a few white film specks)
 • The ghostly energy of past Jedi entering Rey, from Chase Adams
 • Star Destroyer crashing over Coruscant for the finale (snooker)
 • Ben as a Force Ghost
 • Faint double rainbow over the Lars homestead

I’d be curious to see these as well.

I like “I’m no one”, but do you think you can get the mouth movements to work?

No, which is why I put it over the shot of her holding the Skywalker saber. Not a perfect solution (would they have ever shot it that way?) but there is a symbolic justification, so I think it works.

I’d love to see a clip of this, if you’ve already edited it into a state you’re willing to share.

Yeah, I’d like to see how that looks sometime too.

• Would be nice if Palpatine could say “Luke was saved by his father. (You have no one here) (or something).”

I had almost this exact same idea, but I had trouble finding appropriate dialogue. Another idea I had was that you could reuse the line, “Weak. Like your parents” and have him say, “Weak. Like your Master” or “Weak. Like Skywalker.” Rey wouldn’t say anything. Then, it would cut back to Palpatine as the “sunroof” opens up and reveals the battle. It could draw a parallel between her and Luke, and how Palpatine used their weakness (and strength), their friends, against them in both instances.

I think the line works as is. Her parents were no one who ended up dead. Rey doesn’t have a response and we see the sunroof open and her new family dying at Palpatine’s hands as well. We know Luke succeeded so I don’t think it’d have quite the right impact.

EDIT: Palpatine does say “no one” during the Resistance being destroyed montage. If the dialogue is isolated well enough, you might be able to make “You have no one here.”

Yes I flagged that too. I actually meant to edit that out of my cutlist, that was more a note for myself, haha. Trying to figure out what I can do.

I’ve updated the cutlist, but keep in mind some things are still in flux.

RogueLeader said:

I think it is Rey’s dramatic pause kind of adds to the cheesiness of the moment. “And I… I’m all the the Jedi.”

It adds to it but ultimately I think the pause is cheesy because what it leads up to is so meaningless and anti-climactic.

I also think simply, “I am a Jedi” would be better than saying she’s all the Jedi.

I think, for me, another good option would be to just cut those last two lines. Palpatine’s final words could be, “A scavenger girl is no match for the power in me!”
And then Rey uses his own power against him, without making some cliché declaration.

There’s probably a few different ways to do it, not all seamless in an edit. I think “I’m no one” works.

I noticed in your cutlist you said you’d “try to have Rey say ‘I’m no one, AND I’m all the Jedi.’” If it’s possible, you could be more concise and just have their exchange be

Palpatine: No one can defeat me!
Rey: And I’m no one.

Because, much like the “And I Am Iron Man” scene they were obviously trying to imitate here, the line “I’m no one” was actually set up in an earlier movie.

I should probably update my cutlist. Yes, that’s actually how I have it now (couldn’t find a satisfying way of doing it how I originally planned, and this works just as well).

I don’t give a shit if or what it’s imitating either way. What matters is what it’s doing on its own, which I think is justified with this change.

And even then - okay, you don’t think Hux can be a real bad guy. That’s dumb on the part of the creative team to buy into that, but alright, I’ll roll with it.

Why do you then go and get RICHARD E. GRANT to play such a NOTHING of a character?

When Captain Canady made more impact in 2 minutes of screentime than RICHARD E. GRANT did? Come on.

Grant really plays the role exactly right too, it’s a shame there’s nothing for him to do.

RogueLeader said:

They could’ve just made Hux lash out more after how he was treated in TLJ. One of the good things in the DOTF script was that it introduced Hux by having him execute the Resistance sympathizer. It reestablishes Hux as someone who had power to hurt people we care about. (It also makes Hux have Force-envy, but…)

But Hux throwing a coup against Kylo felt like such a huge set up. I find it weird JJ and Terrio watched that, saw that final look Hux have Kylo in TLJ, and said, “Well shit, we gotta get rid of Hux now…”

Yeah Hux is really shafted. He’s a dangerous character, I feel like people forget that everything the First Order accomplishes in TLJ is because of him. It’s weird too that they bring up the “error of Starkiller base” when they managed to destroy the Republic and destabilize the galaxy, which allowed them to take over in the first place.

Ideally Hux would have been shown to clash with Ren in IX, and also go far off the reservation (with the rabid “weakness” not being properly manipulated). Yeah he’s the butt of jokes, but that doesn’t make him toothless. It’s easy to imagine a scene in a better IX where we go from laughing at him to be afraid of him in seconds because he’s suddenly executed a Resistance buddy. Missed opportunities.

My suspicion that the original version of the shot where her hand flops over had the medal in it.

Honestly sort of surprised they didn’t go full sentimentality and have the medal falling out of her hand and clattering to the floor, with the sound ringing over into the next cut of Kylo stopping short and turning around.

That would require a scene setting up the medal as Han’s, and they didn’t have time for that.

Without a scene of that sort, sorry to say, Chewie getting the medal will never be in my edit. Probably the single scene that annoyed me the most, outside of Rey Palpatine stuff.

“If this mission fails, it was all for nothing. All we’ve done, all this time…”

Speaking of, are you going to play around with cutting the second (third?) instance of that line?

Yeah, sort of (3PO says the first half and the second half is left implied - I think it works). I think there’s only two though? Actually pretty easy (a lot of the dialogue in this film is limited to the center track only).

I’ll post that clip at some point but the music there is a bit of a struggle with the way I’ve changed the farewell bit (since it’s an unreleased cue).
