Episode VIII : The Last Jedi - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *
Time

Fuck spin-offs, characters should always explain everything at all times, whether the roof’s falling in or not!

Want good writing? Look at the prequels. Extraneous exposition is the name of the game JJ. You’ll never be a George Lucas if you keep some things mysterious and open to interpretation/speculation.

Star Wars: Forces Of Destiny (animated shorts series) - general discussion thread
Time

I might check this out at some point. I don’t think I’m the target demographic (age-wise, gender does’t matter), but I think it’s a neat idea. Nice to see 2D Star Wars animation isn’t completely dead, and that they aren’t just making cartoons for “boys,” whatever that means.

As usual, I don’t understand how people can get worked up about something so inconsequential.

Star Wars is fantasy first and foremost. People who can’t stop searching for science and logic drive me crazy. I guess the space and advanced technology setting sort of courts that highly literal contingent of people out there, but in my mind that’s simply not how these films are to be viewed.

It’s been 30+ years since ESB so really you could come up with any number of explanations that float your boat, in my opinion the only one that matters is “the way of the force.” Sure you can call that an excuse for a convenience but fuck that, it’s explicit in these films that there’s an all powerful force that controls everything (which doesn’t excuse every convenience, but clearly the saber is very strongly tied to the force and Rey’s fate). It’s like Excalibur basically, which often in Arthur stories gets seemingly lost, only to appear again later.

Which also ties into the thematic significance. I think “uncorrupted Jedi” is a bit too narrow an interpretation. The saber was always primarily about the legacy of the Jedi in general (and Luke’s father specifically). Losing the saber tied into Luke learning the truth behind the lies Obi-Wan told him when he gave it to him. Gone with the saber of course in that moment was the preconception of Anakin as an uncorrupted Jedi, but that doesn’t swallow up the entirety of the thematic meaning behind the object, it just adds to it. It’ll be interesting to see the journey of the saber in TLJ (will it be lost once more?) but it’s hard to say it’s not fitting in TFA. The symbol of the old Jedi order, lost for years because of the power of the dark side (meanwhile Luke himself retreats from his own lost Order), but found elsewhere in the galaxy by those who still hold hope for the return of the Jedi, and given to the new generation who can bring about that return. Honestly feels like the main reason that saber was included was because of the thematic significance.

When Did The Star Wars Prequels Become Cool?

I thought this was a Star Wars site but by the look of a lot the new users here it doesn’t seem like that anymore.

I’ve been really weirded out recently by how much energy people have been expending on making sure everyone knows that they’re so totally over Star Wars.

That’s the badge-wearing “I hate Star Wars!” “I hate Disney!” crowd, who hates any new Star Wars regardless of quality (but still of course sees all the new movies multiple times anyway).

Sock puppets are worthless. Might be the only person on here posting under their true name. Will I be banned for being tired of not wanting to buy anything Star Wars again? Is it better or worse I focus my Blu-ray disc and UHD collection towards movies I truly want to own? Is it bad I pester preservationists and fan editors if they can use an HD source or the Blu-ray disc they’d have far better quality? To not use DVNR or EE?

Sure I used to browse quite a lot but this account I have doesn’t mean shit and is a counterpoint to the one I have on HTF.com and Blu-ray.com

Dude no one gives a shit about your buying habits. Put it here

and leave it out of every other completely unrelated thread you seem compelled to force it in.

Han - Solo Movie ** Spoilers **

Been gone for weeks and have no interest in reading what some of you guys have said about this whole kerfuffle (can only imagine it’s a lot of people who had no faith in the directors to begin with now all worked up that they aren’t involved - basically, people being negative for the sake of it).

It’s mostly Alderaan being Alderaan, people who didn’t care about the film in the first place, and people who actually like the decision.

Seems about right. I just jumped back a couple pages and saw him complaining about something he clearly didn’t understand (camera set ups). Don’t need all that kind of random and unrepentant negativity in my life.

Been gone for weeks and have no interest in reading what some of you guys have said about this whole kerfuffle (can only imagine it’s a lot of people who had no faith in the directors to begin with now all worked up that they aren’t involved - basically, people being negative for the sake of it).

I’ll just say this, I’m honestly pretty disappointed. Lord and Miller are a couple of really talented guys so it’s a shame I won’t get to see their vision of the film.

As for my take on what went down, I guess the undeniable bottom line is that LFL simply had a different vision, and it is their property. Now, why they didn’t realize that their visions didn’t align is a different matter. I guess they were just mistaken. LFL for the most part has been very hands off with the directors (Edwards being the only iffy one but I tend to think that was a consensual collaboration that’s been sensationalized), and I think at the outset they wanted to be with Lord/Miller, and for the longest time they thought that’d work. But I think Lord/Miller assumed they had more leeway than they had, and when they started making on set improv changes that tonally and narratively affected the character and story itself flags went up. Ultimately, my presumption is that Kennedy could have lived with it, but it was Kasdan that took major issue. As the screenwriter, and as a major voice in 3/4 of Han Solo’s previous live action incarnations, Kasdan had a very specific idea of what he wanted this character and story to be, and when Lord/Miller found their take evolving on set, Kasdan used his power as a producer to ultimately out them. In my mind, that’s what makes sense. It’s unfortunate, but I get how it happened. Personally, I think firing Lord/Miller was a mistake, but what the fuck do I know? Basically nothing, none of us do.

Ultimately, oddly enough, I don’t think this really bodes too poorly for the final film. Ron Howard is nothing if not reliable (in fact, the only Oscar winner to direct a SW film). It is a shame, and I can’t say I’m as excited for it now as I was, but I still think it’ll be solid entertainment at the least (like Rogue One). At the end of the day, I do trust Kennedy. Why the fuck wouldn’t I? If you think we shouldn’t, check her credits again. She is almost undeniably one of the best film producers of all time. I think she knows what she’s doing.

Question for the Brits: what’s deal between Labour and Liberal Democrats? Is there a coalition possibility there?

Very possible, you could also include the SNP (Scottish National Party) in there with them

Very interesting. We’ll see what happens I guess.

If anything Trump is proving everyday how fucking stupid it is to elect someone without any experience in political office. If people wanted a populist “outsider” to shake up the system (whatever you think that means), they’ve (at the every least) picked the wrong person.

Well, the only other person who promised anything like that; didn’t get the nomination. I agree, though, Trump preyed on the peoples’ want for a populist candidate, and if Trump was able to recognize that sentiment; I don’t know why the Hillary campaign couldn’t.

But at this point, arguing about who would’ve won is senseless; because the Trump administration is being shitty right now.

I think the idea that we needed an outsider is a strange premise though. Bernie was a career politician too. And I think there’s an argument to be made that many “populist” policies are unrealistic, at least right now, anyway (and certainly Trump hasn’t done much there). I think the idea of “shaking up the system,” is a bit easier said than done.

I’ve been considering seeing Star Trek Beyond, as I’ve heard its more in the mold of classic Trek than ST ‘09 & STID. Now, I still haven’t seen the prior two movies and still don’t plan to. Can this movie be viewed as a standalone film, or is it too mired in the continuity of Abrams’ films?

Everything you need to know going into this one is established in Trek '09. IMO, if you can’t stomach watching that film, you shouldn’t bother with Beyond.

Oh and they blew up the Enterprise at the end of STID. I almost forgot about that.

That’s not relevant at all, since it gets repaired before that film is over.

Did I hurt your feelings Dom? Don’t worry, I’m sure your self-esteem will pick up the next time you join in with Fink, DE, and Co. as you pick on someone else and then go off in the corner and snicker and point fingers some more.

Haha no, don’t worry. My feelings aren’t so easily hurt, and I’m not even sure what you said that you think would’ve insulted me anyway.

I should clarify a few things though:

 • If I were to go off in a corner and point fingers and snicker, it’d be in private. And it’d be my own business, thank you very much.
 • If you think I’m bullying frevious, think again. Haven’t done any such thing and I think the guy should be getting some real psychiatric help, which I’ve expressed before.

What is your preferred browser? For Mobile; for Desktop? Why?

Putting aside the convenience of having the ability to access the internet at a moment’s notice anywhere you are (something that ranges uneccesary but nice to almost essential, depending on the situation), flip phones are a pain in the ass when it comes to texting, which is how the majority of people communicate these days. Durability means little, because I have a case, my iPhone is actually less scratched/chipped than any of my previous devices (as in, it has no scratches at all).

For my phone I use Safari. Never had any reason to use otherwise. I also use Safari for my laptop, though there have been a few instances where I’ve noticed Chrome would be better (my bookmarks are on Safari though so I haven’t been eager to switch).

Having a temperature system for normal Earth humans that only ranges from -10 to 30 degrees makes no objective sense. Centigrade units is the only part of the metric system that I have serious problems with.

And I call it centigrade because it sounds cooler.

Yes, though 0 being freezing makes some good sense, I think.

Also, the weather you describe sounds like where I am. You in the northeast?

If you flip a map upside down, then, yes, I am in the northeast. Otherwise, no.

That area of the country does sound lovely, though.

It is usually quite nice at this time of the year in particular. Except it’s rained almost everyday of the week for the last four weeks or so.
