The reason I assume YouTube reviews are terrible by default is that literally almost anyone can do one. I’m sure there are good ones but they’re 0.0001% of the total because there’s zero quality control. And often when someone recommends some great video in here (or elsewhere) they turn out to be one of the 99.9999%. So while it’s wrong to assume every YouTube video is bad, the chances of being right about it are pretty solid.

(says this having not watched the most recent video posted)

If your ratio was accurate, nobody would go to Youtube.
I find a useful metric is 90% crap, 10% good.

Those numbers are good, but I’m not sure about your quality descriptions. I’d say 90% unwatchable vs. 10% watchable. What’s actually good within that 10% is up for debate.

The title of this thread is pretty self explanatory. Personally I would love to see a Force wielder who practices the dark side but isn’t necessarily evil, whether it’s an individual or a group, I think it would be interesting to see that not all darksiders are interested in conquest and destruction.

This would go against what we know about one interpretation of the nature of the Force.

FTFY

Frankly, I wish Lucas had never depicted the Force is such a stringent “black-and-white-no-in-between” manner. It reeks of foul Objectivism.

I kinda agree, kinda don’t. Like, I’m down with the idea that using the force for selfish reasons is corrupting and can turn you bad. On the other had, you shouldn’t have to repress natural emotions like fear and anger to not become an evil monster.

I wasn’t writing them off, I was trying to say the traditional movie critic who had a journalistic background or came out of the movie industry seems a rare breed these days.

There were plenty of critics I couldn’t stand back in the day. There was at least one who seemed to enjoy trashing Star Wars regularly. Probably pulling their hair out now if they’re still around. 😉

There’s actually a lot of them these days, but most people only read their short blurbs on rotten tomatoes.

Oh, and if there are youtube reviewers with journalistic or film industry backgrounds, it’s news to me. I’d actually be interested in hearing about them.

I’m curious why you think a journalism background helps. My SO has a journalism background and has done movie reviews for a newspaper. Really comes down to having a passion, whatever outlet publishes.

Doesn’t have to necessarily be journalism, but having a background in writing is important. Lots of you tubers just ramble about their opinions. That’s not how you structure a coherent and effective review.

I don’t care for ramblers either. Good thing it’s easy to figure that out early. I don’t like the youtubers who constantly swear - though some of those people are saying something worthwhile. I’m all for judging a channel/video on its own merits.

It’s not the mere fact that they ramble that’s the problem, it’s the effect of the rambling.

You don’t play the Darkside, it pays you.

How much? I’m in if the money’s good.

Great thing about YouTube (& the internet in general) is that it provides an alternative outlet for people to be heard and to develop skills. If Dom or Matt don’t even want to consider a critique because it’s on youtube, fine. Not comment worthy, as Dom notes in his comment on the topic.

Yeah. That’s not the only reason I don’t care to watch it, but yeah.

Right. It’s also a view contrary to yours. I think we can agree that’s the worst kind. There are probably many reasons, but I find this whole line of argument silly. Don’t watch, do watch, it’s your eyeballs.

You’re assuming again.

Just what we all need, another no-name youtuber giving his reasons why nu star wars sux.

Maybe you should watch the video before trashing it. Just a thought.

Or do what I do: keep my mouth shut about how much I don’t care about youtube fanboy opinions.

Except I guess this post isn’t me keeping my mouth shut, but you get the point.

It appears the the Pit scene with Rey may not have been intended to have some big meaning but rather just look cool.

https://io9.gizmodo.com/rian-johnson-gives-his-interpretation-of-reys-enigmatic-1822694943

Um… did you read that article?

Um…yes.

The story served the scene, not the scene served the story. From his telling of it, he wrote the story around being able to include this imagery and doesn’t have a concrete idea of what it means.

You need to read what he said again.

Were there any re-shoots after Carrie passed away? A stand-in (real or otherwise) makes perfect sense for certain shots either way. No studio pays actors to lie down all day anymore than they do for shots where a character is seen from a distance or from behind.

Certainly nothing on the level of a Rogue One, but every movie ends up requiring pick up shots to some extent. No way of knowing if any of them had to do with Leia, and that doesn’t even matter honestly because, even if there was, it’s basically impossible to tell from the finished film.
