The Last Jedi: Official Review and Opinions Thread ** SPOILERS **

In that case: An unmanned kamikaze ship still needs the mass and size of a capital ship, it needs sublight engines and a hyperdrive and it needs an advanced piloting system. It has to stay with the main fleet in case it’s needed, so it costs additional money to operate. Why not buy a regular ship for the same price, which is much more versatile and not limited to one single use? And don’t tell me “it’s just a joke”.

It’s just a (very stupid) joke.

But trailers are designed to maximise the hype, and presumably this was the best they could do in terms of crowd pleasing sound bites even after all the delays.

Well I haven’t seen it but I’m electing to defend it regardless!

FTFY

You will never see me say that a trailer proves a performance will be bad or “wrong.” I just on principle don’t think it’s a fair indication.

Well I can’t speak for what bits they used, as I haven’t seen the trailer. But maybe they just didn’t choose the moments based on where Alden looks/sounds the most like Harrison Ford. Or maybe Alden just decided not to do a Harrison Ford impression. Doesn’t mean it’s not a good performance that evokes the character. You can’t judge this sort of thing based on little bits, whether they showcase the best or the worst of the overall performance.

The Cloverfield Paradox

I liked a lot of things about it, the set design, some of the music, the cast; but in the end, it’s a movie about a whole lot of things just happening because parallel universe and there’s not much to hold it all together.

I guess I forgot to mention my number score or whatever. 2.5/5, or 5/10, or whatever. A fairly competent movie, but far from a good one.

I thought it was good for what it was. I don’t expect greatness from this franchise, just diverting sci-fi thrillers (well sure a lot of 10 Cloverfield was great but still).

Yoda is every bit as strict about the Dark Side in the OT as the Jedi were in the PT.

Not true at all.

“If once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny.” It doesn’t get more absolutist than that. He also believes that Luke should kill those who use the Dark Side. Luke proves him wrong on both fronts. The Jedi in the PT have more explicit rules, but the underlying absolutism is the same.

It’s vaguer than that, there’s still room for interpretations of the dark side to grow beyond what we see in those films. He’s basically just saying once you go dark, you don’t come back, which of course Luke proves is wrong by turning Vader. When he talks about fear and anger there, I take it to mean he’s saying be careful of those emotions, he’s not necessarily saying to repress them.

In TPM the Jedi council doesn’t want to train Anakin because he’s afraid. Which is dumb. Not to mention their views on love and attachments, of course. Problem being that there’s no one in the movie to prove them wrong, but there is someone who proves them right.

Oh, also

The Cloverfield Paradox (2018) - I really dig the variety they got going with these movies, quite an awesome anthology sort of series they’re creating. I love the set up here, I guess I’m a sucker for ‘team of astronauts need to save Earth’ stories. They tear through the story at breakneck speed, more or less to its detriment - not nearly enough time for mind fuckery with the titular paradox and emotional connection with the characters. But still, some of what happens is so off the wall and exciting you can’t help but enjoy it. And the cast is so good that you buy their emotions even if you aren’t personally invested in them. Looking forward to the next one. B

L.A. 2017 (1971) - A movie I’ve wanted to see for a loooong time. Steven Spielberg’s first feature length movie, technically an episode of a show called The Name of the Game, though it works as a standalone movie. That doesn’t mean, though, that it works as a good movie. It’s a pretty basic dystopian future story (well, it’s set in the past now!), that’s hindered by its very obviously low budget. Spielberg’s constrained here, obviously still trying to figure out how to do good work in an environment that just churns out content as fast as possible. D+

Something Evil (1972) - Another Spielberg TV movie, his follow up to what’s probably the best ever TV movie, 1971’s Duel. Which makes this something of a disappointment, as it’s mostly a run of the mill haunted house/satanic possession movie. Once again, Spiels has his hands tied with a weak script and budget/time constraints, but he still gets a few good moments in there. At the very least, it’s pretty watchable. C

Savage (1973) - Spielberg’s final TV film, and another hard one to find. It’s a fairly interesting story about an investigative TV reporter (Martin Landau, always reliable) doing some detective work on a suspected politically motivated murder. Problem is, the movie was actually conceived as a series pilot (though not picked up), and it feels like it (for example, not nearly enough about Savage and the TV side of things, surely saved for later episodes). C

Spielberg (2017) - Been itching to watch this since it came out, finally found the perfect time. A fantastic round up of his life and career. Loved that they didn’t worry about letting it play long, so you actually get some good perspectives on a number of his films. Also surprisingly emotional. I’m glad they did my favorite filmmaker justice with this. A-

Gotcha. It seemed strange to me that it was going straight to Netflix too. But if it’s going to be on a streaming service it’s nice that it’s on the most popular one, and that they didn’t invent their own proprietary one.

Totally agree.

Also, haven’t seen it mentioned anywhere, but it’s likely it won’t be the only Cloverfield film this year.

I don’t like the “suppress you emotions” thing either.
I’m referring to “Once you start down the dark path, consume you it will.” Not “Don’t you dare get mad”. (that’s probably not a direct PT quote).
Being scared or mad is ok. Using the force for personal gain is not.
I forget sometimes that these waters have gotten so muddy.

Yeah, I don’t have much of an issue with how it’s described in the OT, because it’s not so strict. The PT is where I take my issue.
