I don’t understand why it’s so hard to believe that maybe if they drastically retooled a movie after it was almost finished that maybe that movie wasn’t turning out to be very good. Occam’s Razor and all that.

It’s not that I find it hard to believe, I just wish they’d be more transparent about how things went down. With there seeming to be a gag order on the subject, I don’t fully trust anything that makes it past the guard so to speak.

I wish that they were more open about the process too, but it seems like LFL (or maybe Disney) is trying to make it seem like these are trouble-less productions.

What makes Gilroy seem credible is the fact that it sounds like he’s telling tales out of school (he holds back only when it comes to directly stating things it sounds like legally can’t be said), and what he’s saying doesn’t really reflect well on the studio.

It does reflect well on himself, and a common criticism of Rogue One (whether you agree with the criticism or not) is that it was heavily reshot and the implication is that it was reshot for the worse. Cynically, it would make sense for him to say something like this. I’m not calling him a liar, I just don’t feel comfortable with taking it for granted that Edwards’s version was bad just because the man who was hired to reshoot it says so.

To be fair, we don’t know what the issues were. For all we know, Edwards’ vision may have been great, but Disney had demands for the final act which Edwards couldn’t easily reconcile with his own vision of the original script. And that may be the ‘trouble’ Gilroy was talking about.

That theory doesn’t really make sense with what we know. For instance, what sort of demands for the final act would they have had? From what we know, Edwards and co. originally had some of the crew surviving because they thought Disney wouldn’t like that, but it turns out they didn’t mind. From the trailers, we can see that the climax was a bit more complicated (two different towers with more stuff on the beach in between). Those changes don’t seem studio mandated as much as trying to improve the pacing and hone the focus. The only other confirmed change to the finale we’re aware of is the Vader hallway scene, which Edwards has said he came up with and directed himself. So I’m not sure how that would fit your theory that Edwards “couldn’t reconcile it with his vision.”

The truth is, movies are constantly evolving. A director’s “vision” for a movie doesn’t mean that they have a rigid idea of exactly how everything with go from start to end, things change the whole way through. In this case it just seems like another filmmaker came in to help Edwards make the movie the best it could be with the time they had. Doesn’t mean they needed to usurp Edwards’s “vision” or whatever.

Gilroy said (paraphrasing) “at that point anything would be an improvement.” Hyperbole aside, that doesn’t sound like he’s describing some secret masterpiece that Disney wanted to ruin or whatever.

At the end of the day, I don’t think we should take Gilroys comments as a knock towards Edwards or his original version. They certainly could be, but could just as easily be knocks at the producers/Disney, or just the production as a whole.

I agree they’re not necessarily a knock towards Edwards and they could easily be taken as a knock towards the production. But he’s very explicitly knocking the “original version.”

Dom, since you aim at replacing the soundtrack on many scenes, are you going to try something with the AOTC ending in order to remove the Vader’s theme that’s quite out of place here ? I’m thinking about trying myself with Shadow of the Empire soundtrack. Don’t know if feasible though.

Yeah I want to change that, but it might be hard to get something else to fit.

I know this post was a few months ago, but have you thought about using William’s own original version?

I believe I’ve seen that before, and, as much as I prefer it, I don’t think I’d ever use it unless a recording with a real orchestra popped up. Just not quite right like that, unfortunately.

The sound of Luke working on 3PO is there, just really faint I think. Maybe I can try to slightly shift the ambient track and increase the audio gain a little and see if it sounds any better. If anyone can find a decent creaking sound effect please share it, I think that might help sell it.

Watching it again, I can hear that, but yeah maybe a tad too faint. I think the issue is the creaking chest which we hear then suddenly don’t hear.

Okay, I’m trying to nail down the crawl right now. Don’t know who’s seen both cuts, but the crawl is somewhat different in each.

For reference, here’s the crawl in the first work print I sent out, which is maybe a bit too long:

The Clone Wars have ravaged the galaxy. The fragile Republic is crumbling, having conceded extreme executive powers to combat the attacks of the ruthless Separatist leader, Count Dooku.

Forced to wage war across the stars, the Jedi, once peaceful protectors, have left room for the droid army to sweep into the galactic capital and kidnap Chancellor Palpatine, head of the Republic Senate.

As the Separatist forces attempt to flee the besieged capital with their valuable hostage, two Jedi Knights lead a desperate mission to rescue the captive Chancellor…

Here’s the one from the second one, which brings the word count down a good deal:

The Clone Wars have ravaged the galaxy. Its fragile Republic is crumbling under attacks by the ruthless Separatist leader, Count Dooku.

In a stunning move, the fiendish droid commander, General Grievous, has swept into the Republic capital and kidnapped Chancellor Palpatine, head of the Galactic Senate.

As the Separatist forces attempt to flee the besieged capital with their valuable hostage, two Jedi Knights lead a desperate mission to rescue the captive Chancellor, and bring the war one step closer to its end…

And here’s the crawl I’m feeling good about right now, which tries to marry the two somewhat:

The Clone Wars have ravaged the galaxy. The Jedi Order is spread thin, forced to combat the attacks of the ruthless Separatist leader, Count Dooku.

In a stunning move, the fiendish droid commander, General Grievous, has swept into the Republic capital and kidnapped Chancellor Palpatine, head of the Galactic Senate.

As the Separatist forces attempt to flee with their valuable hostage, two Jedi Knights lead a desperate mission to rescue the captive Chancellor and bring the war one step closer to its end…

The Obi-wan line replacement works better than I would’ve thought. That’s a change I’ve wanted to make for a long time, and it’s cool to see it work. In my mind, the original line is a lie too far with ROTS in line. All that needs done is filling SFX in that gap where the audio cuts out, and it’s probably perfect.

That gap you mention, in that spot I overlay some room ambience I got from a break in the conversation after Obi-Wan says “and he was a good friend”. I increased the audio gain slightly in hopes that it would match up pretty well. So there is ambient there, but maybe it isn’t perfect since we don’t hear a creeking ‘chest opening up sound’ or something like that.

Yeah it’s almost there, you just need more of that creaking, and/or the sound of Luke working on C-3PO, which we can hear before and after.

Not going to lie, the third instalment is very concerning to me now that Abrams and … some guy from Batman V Superman are on script duty.

Alternatively, the Oscar winning screenwriter of Argo.

Probably a blip

At this point it’s hard to know what’s a blip and what not (BvS being a clusterfuck from every direction to the point where you probably can’t really blame it on one screenwriter). All you can do is either look at it glass half full, or glass half empty.

A minor continuity error I noticed is when Poe is speaking with Holdo for the first time. She says “It’s commander right? Wasn’t it Leia’s last official act of command to demote you? For your Dreadnought plan?”, but that wasn’t Leia’s last official act of command. Right before the bridge explodes she orders The Raddus to stay out of range of the First Order’s barrage and to have maximum rear shields or something like that. I know it could be explained that Holdo just forgot, but the order that’s keeping everyone alive seems like a pretty massive point to forget.

That line was especially annoying. A good leader shouldn’t be passive aggressive.

It’s a great line. You’re supposed to be somewhat skeptical of Holdo at first. And Poe was trying to pull a fast one by introducing himself as commander.

I feel like there could have been a better way of doing that. Especially since we’re supposed to think she was right the whole way through by the end.

Sorry that passive aggressiveness doesn’t make me automatically hate a character.

Is that passive aggressiveness I detect?

Top Secret! (1984) - Friend recommended this to me, but I did not expect it to be this good. The rate of gags per minute in this film is off the charts. Absurd and hilarious, never going for the obvious/easy joke, always playing with your expectations. Probably at least as good as Airplane!, not sure why more people don’t talk about it. A-

The Death of Stalin (2018) - You’d think a movie on this subject matter shouldn’t be funny, and you’d be right, but honestly thank god it’s funny or it’d be incredibly depressing. One of the best black comedies I’ve seen in awhile. B+

Isle of Dogs (2018) - I’ve seen and liked every Wes Anderson film, and while I wouldn’t say this one disappoints, I still expected to like it more than I did. Spends to much time with the human characters and doesn’t let the dogs’ story really breathe in the way it needs to. Still, it’s good. B

Unsane (2018) - One freaky as hell movie. Don’t watch if paranoia comes easily to you, as it won’t help. The iPhone of it all is distracting at first, but you quickly forget once things start to get, well, crazy. Real edge of your seat stuff. B+

A Quiet Place (2018) - Apparently it’s a great time for horror/thrillers. A fantastic premise that’s played nearly to perfection - no unnecessary exposition, no lengthy prologue, none of that. We jump right in and figure it out along the way. The burden of the film is placed on director John Krasinski’s feet, and he does not fail to make this world and this family feel absolutely real. You’re invested, and once shit starts to go down, you’re biting your nails the whole time. The movie doesn’t let up - it’s relentless in throwing problem after problem at the main characters, though they never feel repetitive or un-engaging. The only thing that keeps this movie from greatness is an unfortunately confused central character dynamic and arc. But you don’t need that deeper emotional pull to enjoy the thrills at play here. B+

The Hollars (2016) - After that, I needed to see more of Krasinski’s work. I remember wanting to see this when it came out, but the reviews weren’t great. Turns out… the reviews were right. Tonally all over the place, not very funny, too many melodrama cliches, etc. The likable cast is possibly the only thing that makes it watchable. A crazy jump in quality between these two films. On the one hand this is bad mainly because of the script, which he didn’t write, but still the directing is not great either. Who knows. C-

Twins (1988) - An amusing premise that doesn’t live up fully to its comedic potential. Schwarzenegger and DeVito are both pretty good, but the story is ultimately pretty boring. C+

Well I was on her side from the start. I love Poe, but he was trying to lie to her. Sorry that passive aggressiveness doesn’t make me automatically hate a character.
