Could work, but I think it’s probably fine without it. The way it’s presented, I don’t think anyone would guess it’s supposed to be a “broadcast” unless you know the behind the scenes of where the audio comes from.

• Various VFX additions being made for Hal, pending when they get finished
• Adding more dialogue to the Luke/Rey convo

As well, a few people suggested I use the Fornite broadcast like Hal did, which I pushed back on. But now having watched his edit, you really don’t get the impression at all that it’s some silly “broadcast,” the implication seems more like a transmission from Palps to FO officers that they merely intercepted. So I’ll probably put that in.

I’m also toying with the possibility of an alternate version that cuts out both the medallion and the super lasers (I realized you can’t just cut the former). I’m gonna try some things now but that probably won’t be part of this workprint.

Also couple of other minor tweaks I’m considering, plus some more extensions no one will notice.

Anyone I haven’t gotten in contact with about a link - haven’t forgotten, just be patient, the last workprint has been taken out to pasture. New one should be done in the next week or two.

I think this is another interesting idea, but no, I didn’t do it. I think the information isn’t completely relevant at this point and would just cause confusion.

Yes I think there was some talk about how it’d look more legit if the lights were turned off as it were in Vader’s castle. As well there’s probably some potential for more changes in the other shots - adding lava flow to the tree shot and some of the shots with Kylo, darkening the ground that Kylo’s on. Just ways to tie it all together. Beyond my abilities of course.

Re: the saber effects, are the shots that kewlfish made available or are we still waiting on that?

There was never a source. People just speculated that it might be his theme since he was in the scenes featuring it, and the other new characters (Rey, Kylo, Poe) each received a theme. But the evidence is against it since there are moments in the film that are Finn specific without anything like that motif, and Williams only reprised it once in the next two films (when BB-8 fixes Poe’s X-Wing in TLJ - nothing to do with Finn). Since Williams reprised every other new theme he created for TFA, it seems unlikely that he would abandon just one.

More likely he didn’t have a theme, and never got one. It wouldn’t be unusual, Lando never got a theme, Padme never got a theme, Obi-wan and Luke’s themes both became more general, and Han didn’t get a theme until 2018.

Hey, I might PM you about this. I like the way it’d one in Hal’s but am considering some slight retiming for my edit.

This is kind of a lame reasoning, but I think it makes sense:

I would argue against anything that tries to vary Rey’s lightsaber from Kylo’s, because if it looks somewhat similar but ultimately different, it’ll feel like a fan edit trying to replicate Kylo’s effect, but not being able to make it look right. Personally it feels cleaner to go the kewlfish/Luka Frik route, which seems legit to my eyes, rather than something that falls into sort of an uncanny valley territory.

• At around :14/:15 you can see some residual blue glow flare up in the background to the left of Luke
• At around :25 when the hair blows, the mask seems a bit obvious since the hair moves by the edge stays the same

I also wonder if there’s some way you could thin up the shot where Luke stands up and says “there’s something my sister would want you to have”? That one always stands out to me, I think it’s more a matter of the angle and the robe making him look bigger but he just looks strange there to me.

Yes I agree it’d work better for the rest of the movie since it’s all about her struggle with the dark side. I think in the final scene it’d show some sort of reconciliation of the darkness within her. Moreover, I just think it’s lame that she wears the same exact thing as before. She’s changed a lot and is now on the next step of her journey. Even just change itself is a bit of symbolism.

While we’re imagining up visual changes to make Rey more interesting in this film, I know we’d all have loved if she wore black throughout, but that seems like a big ask, VFX-wise. But what if she wore a black or even a gray outfit in the final scene? Or maybe black with white wraps? Might be more doable.

Kind of building on the idea of the crackly Skywalker saber, I think it could be interesting if during Kylo and Rey’s duel on the Death Star, that Rey’s saber was almost becoming “overloaded” from the constant saber-clashing, and starts shorting out by the end of the duel. For example, in the shot where Rey sort of shakes her hand, you could have the saber fluttering in and out. Then finally, when Kylo keeps hammering away at Rey while she is on the ground, we could see the saber give out while Kylo is raising his to deliver the final blow. This would give a reason for why Rey grabs Kylo’s saber and stabs him with it, rather than just using her own.

I think it would add an interesting aspect to the duel that we haven’t really seen before, where our characters are dealing with a malfunctioning weapon. It also gives Rey a practical reason for why she inevitably builds her own.

Looking at it now, Maybe the trees should be roto’d but that’s a little out my league for now.

In the final second you can just about see the whole thing drifting to the right a bit. And the whole thing seems a little bit too dark. Otherwise looks good!

I agree. Not to keep this going on much longer, but that’s exactly the sort of thing that I meant when I mentioned the change in modding style. Sometimes a discussion naturally moves onto something else for a bit, sometimes people make jokes that don’t directly contribute to the discussion. But those are the reasons that many people like forums, they’re the things that make them feel alive, like real communities. The stricter modding and excessive organization can kind of kill that energy.

I think a lot of us still remember TV’s Frink being permbanned years ago, not for rule breaking, but for just “being annoying” according to Jay. Have to imagine there’s still some bitterness towards the general style of moderation that has lead to some of these longtime users feeling like the site has become a different place. People seemed to like Off Topic much more when it didn’t have such strict and sometimes confusing moderation.

But it’s fine. The projects sections still live on. Not every site needs an off topic section that people care about.

I understand how you feel RL. I actually kind of think the movie’s biggest sin is what it did to Finn and Rose, separately and together. No follow through whatsoever. It’s frustrating because it’s easy to think of so many little things they could have done - the star destroyers are remote or manned by Sith Troopers who are clones or robots, or Finn uses the comms tower to send a message to the crews of the SDs to abandon ships. Finn could have had a line to Jannah to convince her to join the Resistance, Finn and Jannah and co. could have had stormtrooper armor in the final battle to signify where they came from. But no, no, no. Unfortunately I don’t know how much we can do.

This is something I was playing with six months ago. It definitely needs some tweaking here and there, but I think some variation of these new lines could possibly work. I think I still have the audio files I was working off of on my computer somewhere. Let me know and I can send them to you.
