***The ADigitalMan non-Star Wars DVD Info and Feedback Thread***

ADM: I just looked through chunks side-by-side of your HP edit and Rikter's.
The funny thing is most of what I remember as being in the ABC edit and not in yours really are in your edit.

I was curious with Rikter's disc being widely available now are you considering a newer version of HP1 & 2, shuffling scenes that you have in a different order to better match the director's cut?

ADM, yes you can use DEFNITELY use newer versions of ffdshow to generate 5.1 from a stereo source. That one does not have problem from what I've found.

Btw, in regards to some of the other discussions: sure there are many good ac3 encoder that can turn 2 channel stereo to ac3 2.0, but the point of programs like ac3filter (maybe) and ffdshow is to upmix to 5.1 at the same time. They do this by real-time encoding SPDIF output and passing it to a file (with graphedit). I DID manage in my attempts to get ac3filter to pass 5.1 PCM audio to a file, but the ac3 encoder just wouldn't work right for me. (You should be able to do the same with ffdshow). From there you could take it to whatever high quality ac3 encoder you'd like and you don't have to settle for lower quality from a faster encoding. It increases the steps but gives you the best of both worlds.

Anyway you are expanding the sound fields and providing discrete channels rather than just compressing a matrixed surround. And by using something like DPL2 to provide the upmix you are improving the quality of the surround for people with non-DPL2 surround systems. You can even tweak the matrix yourself.

Sure I sound like a convert, but the fact is still that I used 2-channel PCM on my releases. Mind you 5.1 PCM is available on HD systems.

BD & HD DVD OT in AVC with PCM 5.1! Can you feel it? (And can you understand my abbreviations?)

ADM, hmm. There wasn't a guide, it was something I worked out myself, except now I can't duplicate it. It might be something that worked with an earlier version of ac3filter and now doesn't or I'm just not remembering what I did.
I'll have to get back to you on that one.

Edit: Nope it just won't work for me now. I wish I could remember what version I was using. Anyway, Doom9's guide is still out of date since ffdshow is able to directly encode ac3 as well.

That is: Original File -> Wave Parser -> ffdshow -> wav dest -> file writer (.ac3)

All the other stuff it talks about is unimportant. You can TRY using ac3filter in place off ffdshow, which is what I was doing before. It might be a problem particular to my PC and the current version or it might not be.

Request: VHS PAL Capturer wanted.
Time
I was looking to do a preservation of a VHS that hasn't made it's way to DVD yet (and may not for legal reasons).

I was going to use a NTSC sourced tape but the master was likely 25 frame PAL. To make matters worse the U.S. version is significantly shorter than the U.K. release.

So what I'd like to do is pick up a PAL copy on ebay if I can find someone to do the capture for me. The tapes are cheap, but I can't see spending the money for a PAL VCR for a single use.

Anyone (preferably U.S. for shipping cost reasons) able to accomodate?
