Anyone Interested in doing an Extended cut of Raiders of the Lost Ark?
Time

What continues to make me crazy is that I swear I saw a cut of of this film with Indy waking up with his arm tied to the periscope with his whip as the submarine arrives at the island.
I clicked over to see the scene on YouTube and it’s not what I ‘remember’.
Yeah, I know it’s in the graphic novel. Heck, maybe some other movie ripped it off and that’s what I’m remembering.

I dunno. Sure you get all kinds of jerks when you do edits (I left Fanedit forums years ago for that reason), but re-reading user2000’s post, I’m more inclined to believe that what was said wasn’t intended to be mean.
OT forums isn’t just a place for fans. You have a lot of people that like to discuss editing and preservation in the best ways possible. So nitpicking, while normally is insulting, in cases like this it seems more like: ‘hey, did you know that…’.
There are things mentioned about x265 and 10-bit encoding I didn’t know. I learned something that I’ll use in the future.
And of COURSE everyone has an opinion about file size. You have picky people who probably want you to do UHD disc versions and you have people that want to be able to download it and watch it on their 5-year old cellphones.
Heck, ADigitalMan released DVD5 and DVD9 editions of his edits for that very reason… which, even though standard definition, I would still be watching if yours didn’t exist.

So I got distracted and completely missed that v2.1 was released and grabbed them today. (Thanks, JJP).

…I hate being the one to mention this, but just checking PoA and I noticed that all three audio tracks are echo-y compared to v1.5.
Some scenes (like inside the Dursleys’ house) sound like they are in a public bathroom or something. I did a quick check on the other films, but it only seems to be an issue with ‘Prisoner’.
Anyone else notice this?

I haven’t gotten to watch these yet, but I did notice an increased softness just skipping around after you released them. I did know you really wanted to go with the smaller file sizes, so I didn’t say anything.

Also, as far as audio and specific to my home setup, aac takes a double hit in lossy quality. My system re-encodes AAC to AC-3 in order to pass it to the tuner. AC-3, DTS are passed untouched and most lossless have the cores passed.
Like I said, that’s specific to my setup, so again, not worth mentioning.

'Raiders of the Lost Ark' - bluray and colour timing changes (Released)
Time

JadedSkywalker said:

Why is every release since Lowry so soft looking, and a heavy use of DNR.

You would hope a fresh 4K scan that is as sharp as possibly without artificially sharpening the image or using digital video noise reduction techniques, would be the next step for a 4K UHD release.

But knowing Paramount and Lucasfilm it will be the 4K Imax restoration with the messed up colors. Since that is also the current 4K DCP most likely.

Edit:
Well i watched the blu ray version again as it aired on thanksgiving on Paramount Network. I have no idea how this version ever was passed off as releasable. First you have the problem with Satipos face morphing at the beginning of the film and no consistency in the color timing from reel to reel, sharpness or anything really.
Some scenes are heavily DVNR’ed some are okay, but far too many are overexposed and Indy has sunburn in almost the entire movie with an orange face. The colors are overly muddy looking in places and others too much brightened. I hope this is not the version that makes it to 4K and we get a new scan.

Younger audiences don’t watch older movies. Just as silent and then black and white films have been ignored, films from ‘before you were born’ tend not to be watched. Film grain and older analog looking color timings are a dated look.

So like colorizing black and white, scrubbing the grain, inserting some CG effects and adding HDR gives a more modern & digital appearance that they hope will appeal to a younger customer base.

I haven’t grabbed this yet, but seeing the YouTube trailer, I have a question.
In Prisoner of Azkaban, early in the movie Harry eats a candy that makes him whistle and smoke like a steam engine.

The deleted scene that’s been added back, Harry eats a Pepper Imp from Honeydukes, which is different.
“They are actually quite fiery in nature, not only creating a chilli like flavor, but also actually allowing the consumer to breath fire. As a result, smoke also leaves the nose and ears making for quite the hilarious sight.”

It looks like he blows a smoke ring now in the trailer. You didn’t go with fire? Did you add any sound effects to go with it?

Probably true, stwd4nder2. My TVs with HDR are early in the tech, but I feel most of the time it’s more like when you go to an electronics store and they are demoing the TVs in torch mode.

Still, I can’t imagine any director or cinematographer more than 6 or 7 years ago intending their work to look anything like what HDR does to it. Heck, when HDR first came out, they had to teach a lot of filmmakers what it was. Anyway, I guess we’re mostly off topic now.
