Don’t get me wrong guys, I want the 100% theatrical version preserved as well, CreepyPuppetYoda and all, and I’d keep it for archival purposes. But the “theatrical but CGI Yoda” version would be the only one I’d ever watch outside of full-on fan edits.

Of course, I don’t think anyone was under the impression you don’t want it preserved. I just can’t fathom a preference for CGI Yoda. He constantly has a scowl on his face, giving everyone the Kubrick stare at the same time. Like, yeah, Creepy Puppet Yoda looks bad and doesn’t look like Yoda, but the same can be said about CGI Yoda. Creepy Puppet Yoda is so much more expressive, and actually matches the expression in the vocal performance.

My biggest “compromised purism” in Star Wars is wanting to conform the BR cut of TPM to the theatrical cut - that is, keep the editing of the theatrical cut exactly, but with all the visual updates of the BR (CGI Yoda, mainly).

It’s the only one where something like that would outright replace any official version forever for me.

But Creepy Puppet Yoda™ looks infinitely better than CGI Yoda. CG Yoda constantly has his head at a downward angle and looks up at the people he’s talking to only with his eyes, and he lacks the little bit of expression that CPY had left. Screw consistency, I prefer a decent but weird puppet that looks nothing like the character over awkward CGI that still looks nothing like the character. 😛

I would never date a drinker. Since you mentioned she doesn’t feel the same way as you, I assume you’ve spoken to her about your concerns? As someone who hasn’t gone on a date in his life as of yet, I can’t give real relationship advice, but I will say this. I don’t think your feelings on alcohol are a flaw of yours. If you hate alcohol because of your experiences with an alcoholic father, that’s a completely understandable and valid reason to feel that way. She should be able to understand that at the very least, even if she doesn’t think she’ll develop a problem. Your concern is realistic.

That said, I wouldn’t know the first thing about resolving this kind of problem. If I could help it I would never let myself get into a situation like this, but if I did, I don’t know what I could do other than ask her to stop. I’m definitely not saying you should do this, but if it were me and she chose alcohol over me, I’d probably walk away from the relationship.

I hope things work out for you.

Wallace & Gromit in "The Wrong Trousers" - Original Audio Preservation [Released]
Time

Is there any verification that the 25 FPS is correct?. Stop motion is generally shot at 12 FPS, since it’s too much work to animate any faster, and then doubled to film speed. That’s how they made Curse of the Were-Rabbit. The only reason for them to be 25 FPS would be if they sped up the video and produced the audio at 25 FPS for PAL broadcast purposes

Pitch is really only half of what you need to figure it out as well, you also need to check the timings. Pitch is easily fixed, by adjusting the tempo, which keeps the same pitch, but changes the length (most likely how they fixed it on the VHS).

The best way to figure out the proper framerate is to compare to the soundtrack/score, if it exists officially anywhere. You would check the pitch and length against the video audio. One might be the same pitch, but longer or shorter

Alternatively, surely someone at ‎Aardman might know. It might be worth reaching out via e-mail or social media

[Emphasis mine] I think that’s exactly what was done. It was shot in twos, and was presumably sped up to 25fps for audio sync. I’m willing to trust the UK broadcasts of The Wrong Trousers over video releases with the wrong pitch, that happen to have the exact same pitch difference you get from a PAL-NTSC slow-down.

These new 4K HDR discs are the best I’ve seen these movies look and sound by several orders of magnitude.
I eagerly await the next Harmy Despecialized!

The D+77 and D+80 releases are quite great if you don’t mind less than 100% despecialization (some recomped shots, etc).

Where can I find more information on these releases (D+77, D+80)?

Create an account on forums.thestarwarstrilogy.com. The D+77 and D+80 releases are there, along with several other projects.

Yeah, I’ve created two accounts there but I’ve never gotten my account approved by an admin so I can browse the forums. 😦

Wait a second… Can’t you just use your originaltrilogy.com login? I’m pretty sure that’s what I’ve been using. Haven’t logged out in a while so…
As I recall I learned that here, that you don’t need to create one just use your OT.com one…

I think you do need to create a separate account. Or at least, that’s what I did.

They want you to create an account with the same username as your OT account, I think.

The Phantom Menace theatrical version
Attack of the Clones theatrical version
Revenge of the Sith theatrical version
A New Hope 1981 re-release version
The Empire Strikes Back theatrical version
Return of the Jedi theatrical version

Beyond the added subtitle, is there any appreciable difference between the theatrical & '81 cuts of SW '77?

Nope. New crawl/flyover is the only difference.

Sorry to say, but the audience knew the word “Ewok”

The obscure novelization giving info on how the Emperor gained power & the massive advertising juggernaut plastering EWOK on everything are very different situations.

I agree; I was just pointing out that the principle he espoused is definitely false as a general principle.

No, it is not false as a general principle. There may be occasional exceptions, but “Ewok” is not one of them:

Yeah, people had to go out of their way to read the novelization to find whatever obscure junk lies within. “Ewok” was everywhere, especially considering how strong the toy line was.

Not to mention the closing credits. 😉

As SilverWook mentions, “Ewok” appears in the film. Things that do not appear in the film or are not implied in the film are not known to the audience in general circumstances.

Apart from the GFFA, what is the film you own the most copies of?
Time

ED: Blu-ray Steelbook, UHD (which I can’t use yet), Ultimate Edition DVD
EDII: Blu-ray, Blu-ray Steelbook, German Blu-ray (which I bought because it supposedly had the new remaster… it did not)
AOD: Shout! Blu-ray set, Blu-ray Steelbook, Director’s Cut VHS

I was actually surprised to realize I didn’t have more copies of anything else.

I’m not sure I like the idea of a bittersweet ending to the trilogy, but ROTJ would’ve turned out much better had Lucas and Kurtz worked out there differences with a little more compromise. Gary Kurtz was probably one of the most important people in the creation of Star Wars and Empire. He believed in the material. Lucas probably should’ve gotten Irvin Kershner back to direct too.

It’s in the ROTJ novelization. Along with the name “Palpatine”, which isn’t in the film of ROTJ either.

Sorry to say, but I don’t think the Novelizations really matter. The vast majority of audience members don’t read those. If it’s not in the film, it isn’t “known” to the audience.

The Emperor’s guards are called “Royal Guards” and Luke calls the Emperor “your highness”, but we already knew in 1983 that he’s a politician who got the legislative body to vote absolute power to him, not someone who inherited a throne.

Another thing the PT got wrong.

As I said, it was already known in 1983 that Palpatine was elected to be the Republic’s head of state.

When was this stated in the films?

Wallace & Gromit in "The Wrong Trousers" - Original Audio Preservation [Released]

The BD audio doesn’t have major changes like The Wrong Trousers, but it sounds like it might be a different mix. For example, when Wallace is drawing the ship with him and Gromit inside, Wallace is mumbling to himself in the BD track, but he isn’t making any sounds on the DVD that I can hear.

Star Wars (1977) - a general Random Thoughts thread
Time

Not only its genre, but Star Wars was a lot more juvenile and simplistic than a lot of popular cinema in the '70s. The lack of cynicism resonated with audiences, but no-fun-allowed critics didn’t like it because it wasn’t that deep. I haven’t seen Annie Hall yet, nor have I gotten around to seeing any of Woody Allen’s films, but I have a feeling his work had more thematic depth, which the academy would obviously gravitate towards.

A month ago today, I stop by a local thrift store and find an MGM DVD of 2001: A Space Odyssey. Less than a month later, I upgrade 2001 to Blu-Ray via an eBay lot that also included the soundtrack on CD. And yet I’m still keeping the DVD because of it’s original 70mm six-track audio.

Just in case you didn’t know, the newer Blu-ray actually includes the original audio mix, not to mention it has a much better transfer than the older Blu-ray.
