Childhood Misconceptions (aka The Trap Thread, but misconceptions still welcome)

Speaking of misconceptions from this scene, before I saw ROTJ in HD I always though that this pillow was a part of Jabba’s body. When you see it in VHS quality it looks like some kind of weird flesh-bulge and it always grossed me out as a kid, especially since it looked like Salacious Crumb was partially inside it like some kind of marsupial pouch.

Oh my god, I thought the exact same thing as a kid!

Me too.

Me three.

No, 4K77 isn’t Legacy.

4K77 exists.

This is the biggest and most important truth.

You will never see Legacy. If Legacy was completed, it might as well not have been in my opinion. Bumping this thread every few months to say “boy, I wish I could see Legacy” or “it sure would be nice if Mike gave us an update” are useless.

I’d be glad to be proven wrong, but I’ll be perfectly happy when 4K77 v2.0 comes out regardless.

I really dig the creature design. I think he’s great.

I love him too. I love the laugh.

He’s pretty funny in the Star Wars to Jedi documentary too. I’m surprised there aren’t more outtakes with puppeteer Tim Rose cutting loose.

This has always been a distinct childhood memory of mine, and for the longest time I couldn’t remember where I saw it. I felt like I’d found the Holy Grail when I watched From Star Wars to Jedi a couple years ago. A comment on that youtube video mentions it being in an ad at the beginning of the VHS tapes, so I think I might be remembering it from that.

Denis Lawson sounded awful in the Rogue Squadron games. There would be no reason to re-dub Wedge’s (somewhat iconic) lines from SW and ESB with middle-aged Denis Lawson giving a vocal performance akin to Temuera Morrison in '04 ESB. Even by George’s special edition standards, Wedge’s original voice dub doesn’t create any supposed continuity problems with future installments.

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)

Yeah, I figure that for color grading purposes there will be power windows, but I was under the impression that these are beyond even color grading and directly change the brightness and contrast of certain areas to make certain parts of the image ‘pop’ more for 3D.

This is more of what my concern was. One of None’s difference examples shows a mid-shot exposure change on Luke to remove a shadow that he walks out from under. That’s a fundamental change to the photography and on-set lighting. I don’t think that sort of thing belongs in a theatrical restoration official or not, especially since if an official restoration of Star Wars was made on the level of other classic films, such changes to the image wouldn’t have been made, at least not as egregious as that example. It would make sense if this was done to assist in the creation of the 3D version.

But those are just my thoughts.

I'll never understand the attitude of people who oppose the release of the unaltered original trilogy.

I remember telling one of my high school teachers about Despecialized because he was a Star Wars fan, and after questioning the existence of such a thing he said “I still have the originals on VHS.” He wasn’t referring to SE tapes of course, but the fact that someone would just be okay with having nothing but VHS copies baffles me.

Info Wanted: The DIFFERENT STAR WARS versions - which is best?

I have also noticed that the epic force ghosts scene in ROTJ looks different in every version.
Check this screenshots:

From 4K83 DrReel Color Correction (4K83 1.6)

From Harmy Despecialized v2.5 (newest version), clearly looks more “blue”. Why?
https://imgur.com/sLur4VQ

From 97 Special Edition :Again there is a color change? Now looking more “grey”.

Which of this is the more similar to the way it was shown in ´83 cinema?

Most likely Despecialized 2.5 is the most accurate out of these three, followed by 4K83 1.6, or somewhere in between. For the original effects shots (as well as a chunk in the middle of the film that was out of focus on the Blu-ray) in DeEd 2.5, Harmy used a scan of a Low-fade 35mm print. These prints are very blue, and Harmy corrected the LPP shots to match the Blu-ray footage. 4K83 1.4 uses my own color correction which I based directly on an LPP scan made by TN1. I made the image warmer and wanted to diminish the blue push, but blue objects on screen still have a stronger blue tone, similar to that Despecialized shot. Though I don’t think it’s quite as saturated. It probably would have looked like that when projected back in the day.

I don’t know that I agree that ‘toxic’ needs to stop being used as a descriptor, if only because it CAN apply very well… the problem is that a huge part of WHY it applies is because people DO approach disposable conversations with strangers about space movies with such misplaced energy and importance that it ends up warping perspective, to the point where real toxicity can occur. But usually it’s a pretty long walk between “jeez, that guy is annoying” to “jeez, that guy is TOXIC.”

But even then, that doesn’t mean anyone here can paint a really accurate picture of anyone else’s personality based solely on the very small, focused, and mostly inconsequential (and anonymous) glimpses being given through “Star Wars” talks. Most everyone here has a whole LIFE outside of liking Star Wars that is bigger, and way more important than this, and we’ll never really know about it beyond the surface. Toxicity can be a temporary condition, too, and if you find yourself getting upset at other people’s opinions on Star Wars, in my experience, that just means its time to stop and reflect on what you’re putting into this, and what you’re getting out of it, and whether there’s an imbalance that needs to be tended to on YOUR end.

That word is almost always used when someone has a negative opinion about something someone else likes. DE calls ROTJ bad, he must be TOXIC. It’s meaningless at this point. Anyone who calls someone else toxic immediately looks like someone I don’t want to talk to anymore, even if that isn’t really the case.

The Motion Picture and The Search for Spock are both underrated. And both are better than any of the TNG movies.

+1000

I would even say The Final Frontier is underrated, though for good reason, and it’s definitely beneath the other five movies.

I firmly remember you belittling people who liked SC. 38 Reimagined.

People who liked SC. 38 Reimagined should be belittled. 😉

your posts have such a smug sense of superiority to them that I believe it.

I disagree with DE’s utter contempt for ROTJ (and various concepts and ideas that make Star Wars what it is), but I have never seen him tout himself as superior to others.

I personally like Back to the Future Part II more than Part III, but I enjoy the first better as a standalone with an open ended finish either way. Most of the things I like about Part II is just watching the impressive special effects, and both sequels get a bit dumb at many points. “We don’t need roads” is a better ending to the story than Doc Brown’s locomotive time machine.

TOS is the only good Star trek stuff.

Including the movies, right?

Yeah.

The original Ghostbusters is the only good Ghostbusters thing.

Not an unpopular opinion, unless you’re referring to the actual original Ghostbusters from 1975.

Ah, not that one. But I rarely meet a GB fan who doesn’t like 2 or the cartoons or some kinda BS.

I’ve always been under the impression that most people dislike 2, and I don’t think I’ve ever heard someone say that the cartoons are actually good. I personally enjoy the stupidity of The Real Ghostbusters, but being entertained by something doesn’t always make it good. 😉 I don’t think I could stand too much of it at one time.

Alien3-

  1. It’s a decent movie.
  2. The theatrical cut is much better than the newer workprint cut.

Lol. I’ve still only seen the first two Alien films, but I’ll take your word for it and check it out!

Ok, but please remember that both of those points are extremely unpopular opinions.

Want another extremely unpopular Alien opinion? I don’t like Aliens. Alien is a masterpiece, and Aliens is just dumb. More is not better.

And for another Cameron related one, T2 isn’t nearly as good as T1. Similar to how Aliens misses out on what’s special about Alien, T2 misses out on what’s special about The Terminator.

And on anther sequel related note, Toy Story 2 isn’t that great, and Toy Story is much better when viewed without sequels. Toy Story 3 is garbage, too. In fact, Pixar in general has been garbage since 2009. The magic of Pixar died sometime during Up. I can’t decide whether it died after the opening sequence, or when balloons lifted the house, or when dogs talked, or at the cliche reveal of the childhood hero being the villain. It was probably one of those.

Now a positive unpopular opinion for a change, Nacho Libre is a great movie.

I find the majority of films in the MCU to be overrated. They are released far too quickly and focus way too much on CGI action that ends up looking fake. Nothing can replace practical effects for me.

+1

The original Iron Man and Doctor Strange are the only MCU movies I thought were actually good, strangely enough. Hopefully Sam Raimi can give us an even better sequel to that one.
