First Impressions of the OOT ...
Time
I just picked up the tin at Best Buy, and I was so impressed with the tin, I couldn't be happier. It's a more than perfect way to store my new DVD's.

Right now I'm halfway through Star Wars (it was great to see it without "A New Hope" In the Crawl) and it looks excellent. My bootlegs were very fuzzy, even on the black bars, and there's none of that on these. It has the perfect amount of grain and the perfect soundtrack to make it feel simply magical. It's an old film, yet completely timeless.

I don't think I could be happier right now. The individual DVD's have great packaging, the tin is wonderful, and the movies look better than I could have imagined. I don't care about Anamorphic. This is my definitive version of the movies.

So, what has everyone been doing with thier 2004 discs. For Empire and Jedi I removed them, put disc 2 in disc one's place, and replace the discs with A Musical Journey and the 2004 Bonus Disc, respectivally. I also reversed the Disc order on Star Wars but don't have a bonus disc to put in there.

This pisses me off more than you can ever realize. This fat asshole is telling us that we DESERVE to get ripped off, in other words. Fucking jerkoff dickless fat slob. I'm mailing this dude to tell him what an asshole he is. That comment was way out of line for someone who reviews this kind of shit for a living....

Here's his e-mail address....please take the time to tell this moron that he's an idiot for saying that.

Chris Gore

I would try to find the other asses address to, just to tell him to shut up and keep sucking Lucas off. Fucking TFN ballsucker. Not even worth an e-mail. Asshole.

You know what I love about this forum? We can swear as much as we please and we won't get censored or get our posts deleted. (I'm looking at YOU IMDb.)

Well, I watched ROTJ last night, and here's what I thought:

Jedi probably has the best picture of all three of the films. Very little film grain, and wonderful detail and sharpness. The colors are much better than the laserdisc (vibrant, without looking 'smeary'), the skin tones especially look fantastic- much more natural and much less 'ruddy' than the laserdisc version. The sound was also excellent, like the laserdisc. At times, I forgot I was watching the '83 version and was so happy when the 'lapti nek' scene came on, and the original ending.

Overall, I am very happy with these new DVDs. Of course, I would prefer an anamorphic release in the future, which I will gladly buy if it ever comes out, but until that day (if it ever comes), these are the definitive releases of the OOT, and I'm thrilled to pieces to have them.

For those of you who haven't decided whether or not to buy- I think you should seriously consider buying them before they go out of print.

Also as previously reported, the subtitles (when Greedo speaks) are cut off at the bottom on a widescreen TV when one zooms the picture to frame it correctly.

There are some DVD players that exist (Panasonic makes one) that have an 'aspect ratio' control, that allows you to zoom in on the picture, and also allow the subtitles to be seen on the screen, without being cut off.

Mielr, I have to say thanks for you little reviews. They're short and sweet, containing everything I want to know. You've really helped in my decision to get these. I'm an extremely careful buyer, and I read lots of reviews before jumping in to buy anything, and yours are very helpful, in just saying what the picture and sound is like. I really don't like it when people go into the specifics of pixel size, tiny sound problems and other technical junk that most people can't understand.

BTW, I notice lots of Matte lines on my Return of the Jedi laserdisc bootleg. Is this still present? It was during the final battle against the death star with Lando in the falcon.
And what's the disc art like for disc two? Does it say bonus material or just "original theatrical version."

IMPORTANT! ATTENTION FANS OF DISNEY'S GARGOYLES AND ANIMATION
Time
I personally dislike Gargoyles, but it should be released in full on DVD for those who do enjoy it. But Disney is unbelievably unprofessional at these TV dvd's. They've released a volume one of Duck Tales, Chip N' Dale Rescue Rangers, Darkwing Duck AND Tale Spin only in volume one, and only the latter two includes the pilot episodes. Disney needs to learn that when you start to release a series on DVD, you're commited to it.

Is it truly worth upgrading at this point from my bootlegs? My bootlegs are taken directly from the laserdiscs on DVD+R discs. They look fairly nice, the only one that I'm not entierly satisfied with is A New Hope.

It's worth it. See my review of SW in the 'first impressions' thread:

Thanks Mierlr. I think I'm sold. I'm heading on over to Circuit City to pick up the new Dragon Ball Z movie (the 13th and final one) because its only ten bucks over there. I think I'll pick up the trilogy too. After all, I really want those lithiographs.

Yeah, I just saw it to. The only one not acting like an arrogant jerk was Bill Hunt. Everyone else was saying stuff like "fans will never be happy" and that they're stupid to keep shelling out cash. But Bill said that all fans are asking for is descent transfers that are up to snuff by today's standards. That's all. I could tell he was getting pissed off though. These guys were making fun of him here, and when he did his brilliant Star Trek analogy, one of the other guy's groaned, but Hunt had a point. Star Wars will get milked to much one day, and the cash cow will die.

Gaffer Tape, how can you accuse Hunt of being the polar end of the scale when all of us have opposed it even more than he has?

And Mike, I'm sure Hunt will be very respectful. I read his column every day and he goes into things with an open mind. If he sees thse DVD's and is wowed by them, he'll tell the truth. It'll be hard if the people from TFN are yapping about why you would even want the OOT anyway though. In which case Hunt can bash thier heads in for all I care.

2006 OT DVD: the deal with the Best Buy tin ...
Time
Now I'm thinking of getting these....but even so, it's only 45 for all three at Circuit City, which will be the cheapest, so technically you'd be paying 15 for the tin if you're going with cheapest.

So someone please answer me this:

I think I'm just gunna pick up a copy of Star Wars, and call it good. That way I'll have it as the original crawl, and it will look up to snuff with my other two bootlegs. Or I might not get it at all. In any case I'm going to wait it out until the 30th anniversary set, which I'm bettind WILL have the unaltered films. Lucas is a smart businessman if nothing else, and these releases are to make a quick buck. He says this is the only release, we buy it, uber cool set comes out with remastered OOT, we buy it. Money in the bank.

Star Wars Limited Edition Screen Captures.
Time
Those screencaps look pretty good, but I still don't see any reason to upgrade from my bootlegs at this point. George hasn't release info. on the 30th anniversary editions yet because he's going to include the OOT in ANAMORPHIC and REMASTERED, I haave no doubt. He's doing this release, making us all think this will be the last time, we buy it, he releases it again, we go "Fuck you George," and give him more money.

Plus, he can't call the 30th anniversary set the 30th anniversary set if it doesn't have the film that was made 30 years ago, right?

Technically I found it online, but thier online prices apply to in-store as well. The offer with the lithiograph is in-store only it looks like.

Best buy also had the price listed on-line. It's nice that online prices now apply to in-store as well. Except for Target. I hate that website.
