Do you REALLY think there will be remastered versions of the OOT or whatever? I don't.

But what if it isn't? What if he continues to tinker with them every year, releasing the latest version of his original vision with his tinkering and obvious flaws that he refuses to even acknowledge as if he thinks you're too stupid to recognize it for what it is? Are you simply going to toss away every "inferior" version, even though a year ago, you thought it was the kickassinest, da bombiest version you've ever seen? Or is there going to become a point where you say, "Actually, I like the April 2012 version a lot better than the September 2012 version. Why should I change? Why won't he release the April 2012 version anymore?"

And does it ever occur to you that having this many versions of a single movie is completely absurd? That's why I'm against changing movies in the first place. Why should there be five different versions of Casablanca when the original one will suffice? Why go back and try to change the past? You've made your movie. You had your shot. Now it exists. Now it's time to move on to your next project. I would think that having multiple versions compete against each other would be bad from a business perspective anyway, because it splits your fans' loyalties, but Lucas has managed to parlay it, through deception and stealth, into a great business opportunity. Like Sifo-Dyas said, it's not about visions or improving or connecting the trilogies. It's about milking the cash cow again by never releasing a complete version of anything. It's always a work in the making.

And why on earth would you want to delude yourself into thinking that a 30 year old movie is brand new by adding a whole bunch of new technology, etc. into it. The Back to the Future box set has great picture quality up to today's standards, but there's no attempt to make us believe that it was made in 2002 rather than 1984-85! That's just silly. If Lucas had wanted the movies to be watched in numerical order, he would have written and made then in numerical order. It's that simple.

Very smart statement Gaffer Tape. I think the only times films should be altered are for thier first DVD releases. (Unrated, Extended, etc.) These versions are fine because they are like "unedited" versions, versions that couldn't be shown in theaters. I mean, I'm extremely glad Peter Jackson did the extended versions of LOTR. Now there are two versions, and both widely distributed. But when it comes to remixing it annually, it gets horribly silly.

I laughed out loud at that statement about "I like April 2012 more than September 2012." So true, too...

And if Lucas wanted us to watch them in the order 1,2,3,4,5,6, then he should have made them that way for the love of Christ. At least don't put this bullshit on us about "I couldn't make six films originally" blah blah blah. Star Wars was originally one movie. Then two. It was a movie with sequels, and for the love of fuck there was no grand master plan!!!! That's what pisses me off about Lucas the most. "This is how it was always supposed to be," yadda blah yadda...

What Special Edition changes (if any) did people like?

I hate every last little thing about that stupid fucking Jabba scene in Star Wars. The CGI is god awful, the Huttese dialouge sound terrible, etc. Why would they have that scene anyway? It's too redundant. We'd just heard all that from Greedo. Plus, Jabba really wasn't supposed to be introduced until Return of the Jedi. It had the suspense bulding. I loved how Jabba was just a charecter of reputation, and that although we never saw him he was a constant evil presence for Han.

The only other thing I seemed to notice aside from the inlays for each disc was the "retro" disc art for the bonus discs...not really a grand touch but something unusual anyways. The menus for the bonus discs could have had a better treatment but they probably figure if you ARE buying them for the bonus discs you aren't buying them for the menus.

Anyways, I look forward to watching the other too just to see how dated I remember them to be and what made me fall in love with them in the first place, aside from shelling out another round of cash for a set of discs I already own.

Are you KIDDING? The disc art was great, especially on Jedi. And I fucking LOVED the menus. They're a helluva lot better then the 2004 menus. I love how the poster art basically "assembles" itself on screen, and we hear the John Williams score over them. They're great! I couldn't be any more satisfied with the menus.

Oh goody!!! Another troll on the boards!

Marioxb, I get what you're saying, but it's kind of stupid. You can love George's vision, I repect that opinion, but saying that the OOT should only be out there for completness sake is stupid. That's not why you're a troll though. You're a troll because you said anamorphic would be changing the films and you're basically saying we're stupid for wanting something better. Anamorphic is NOT changing the films in ANY way. It just allows it to be higher quality and fit on a 16x9 display accurately and with good video quality. Wait, you're probably one of those weirdos whose arguement against that is "Anamorphic didn't exist in 1977." That's a very ignorant statement. Anamorphic is just a higher level of video quality. Changing the films would be a 5.1 mix. Anamorphic would not be changing them in any way.

Will those who hate the SE OT and bought the OOT DVD's..
Time
I took out the 2004 editions, and in put the OOT in front on ANH and ROTJ. On ESB, I removed the hinge case. In the disc 2 slot of ANH is Star Wars: A Musical Journey, and in that spot on ROTJ is the 2004 bonus disc. The insert for that is also in this case. And it's all kept in the beautiful new tin that I'm more than proud to have on my shelf.

But I won't be selling the 2004 discs. I spent money on them, even though I didn't want to. I'll keep them around, probably in an old droor somewhere. Who knows? Maybe they'll come in handy some day in some way.

I've Finally Got a Real Signature!!!
Time
Anyone who knows me knows that my signature in the past has been...well...uninspired. Originally, it was "This is the greatest signature ever." It changed to "I need a better signature," which was a much truer statement, and now it is what you see at the bottom of this post, because now I have something to promote. My new website reviewing the latest DVD's, as well as games and theatrical movies. Check it out if you will. I've got some Star Wars related polls running.

But man am I glad to have a relavant signature now...

I agree, and this is why I love coming here!

Probably not. They'll be sticking with the 2004 sets.

And CO, I love coming here and reading your posts. You hit the nail on the head most of the time.

You also made a point about now people can choose which version to like. Most people on this board are thinking that now that casual fans can choose between a non anamorphic, old looking transfer and a sparkly new one, people will chosoe the special edition. Well, that's not the case. Last May, when these DVD's were announced, I'd never seen nor cared about the OOT. I'd gotten the 2004 set as a birthday present from one of my family's best friends, and I was more than thrilled. I didn't know the difference. But when I saw this announcement, and started looking around the web, I got to original trilogy.com, and saw the 70,000 signatures of the petition. I soon ordered a bootleg DVD set off eBay, and I fell in love with the unaltured trilogy. It was that quick. And my bootlegs looked bad. Really bad. But I chose them over the 2004 remastered versions.

That has to say something. That has to say that there are other people out there who will do the same. I was a casual fan. I was a casual fan because I'd never seen the real movies. But look at me now, advocating for the OOT and bashing Lucas with the rest of you here on this board.

I'm young. Younger than all of you, probably. But I chose outdated effects over CGI (though I consider older effects to be better than CGI any day) unlike my peers who thought the PT was cool because of animated Yoda.

Maybe I'm just weird. But I hope to hell that I'm not.

OOT on HD DVD
Time
There is no way in hell that an HD-DVD or Blu-Ray Disc version of the OOT would be in letterbox. Lucas would loose all credibility and become the laughing stock of Hollywood. They wouldn't even allow it I bet. So if the OOT ever does see a high-def release, you can bet your ass it'll be anamorphic, unless Lucas is wearing a straightjacket at that point. He isn't that crazy YET.

What? The theatrical versions were hardly any better. I don't want to see ANY version of the prequels. I guess theatricals would at least make TPM watchable, without the extended pod race and all the other stuff the kills the pacing, but still, I just want the trilogy, in its original version. That's why my nice new tin has just that--plus some bonus discs. That's all the Star Wars I'll ever need.

And you're absolutely right about "severance pay." That was going through my mind when I bought it too.

I prefer the new song in the end of ROTJ to "Yub Nub;" it was much more dramatic, but I hate the other celebration scenes mixed in. I mean, how the hell did word travel that fast? And even so, the planets they chose to be celebrating were stupid.

Another change I like is the added stormtroopers in ANH when Han is chasing them down the corridor. He sees just a few in the original and runs, not making sense, and then sees a shitload of them in the special edition and it makes sense why he flees. That was the best addition by far.

And things like the skyline on cloud city, those are nice.

Limited Edition Packaging Scans
Time
I don't know about the rest of you, but I think the disc art for ROTJ disc 2 looks completely awesome. As do the menus for that disc. The cover art on all movies is really nice too, with all the original poster art and variations on it. I'm so happy with this release, mostly because of the packaging. When I took the tin out of the shrinkwrap and got a look at it, I was so impressed. By the time I'd looked at all the discs and cover art, I was positivly giddy. I'm proud to have that tin sitting on my shelf with those DVD's in it. (2004 aren't in it now)

Anyway, I just really like the packaging for this release, and the menus, which are much better than anything the 2004 release threw at us.

I bought them. I got the tin from Best Buy, which is absolutely gorgeous with original poster art on it and holds the DVD's perfectly.

I got them because I'm positive this is the last release on DVD. Why? Because the 30th anniversary set is next year. George released these so the unaltured trilogy fans could get what they want (sort of) and the 30th anniv. set can be for the fan boys that are gay for Lucas. Also, not putting the unaltured version in the set would be the perfect way to say "Fuck you" to all us fans.

But I mainly got them because I don't really need anamorphic, I just need decent video quality that makes me feel I'm in a theater. These versions do just that. I've never seen Star Wars in a theater, and only saw the OOT for the first time last May, but I fell in love with them and I think these releases feel like a theatrical experiance, even though I've never seen it on the big screen.

So I'd reccomend them. The cover and disc art is great too.

AND SEND THE '04 DISCS BACK TO LUCAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Bill Hunt's (Digital Bits) Review of GOUT

BUT, my problem with him, is that in 2004 he went ga-ga over the "Original Trilogy" release and thought it was the best thing since sliced bread. He had no balls. Instead he gushed about how great they were and how lucky we were to have them at all. Now, 2 years down the road, he jumps on his pedestal and starts ranting. Thanks Bill! Nice timing!

Amen to that. I read his review of the 2004 set. He even said he liked the changes! Then he was on G4 the other day and said, "No one would be happier than me to have these films on DVD..."

Talk about flip-flopping.

This is Bill Hunt's review of the DVD. It's pretty good, but he doesn't give the DVD's much slack at all. I know they didn't look as good as they could, but they're perfectly passable in my opinion.

But I think Hunt has had the mentality that the discs would suck this whole time, and if you go into something with one opinion, no matter what it looks like, that's probably what you're final opinion will be.

Well, all the scenes from that cut will be on November's release, but not IN the movie. They'll be bonus material. But they will be remastered and in Anamorphic Widescreen, so a fan edit should surface very quickly.

The Wizard of Oz with ALL Deleted scenes in. If anyone has the recent three disc or two disc release, you'll know that the only scene that still has footage to go with it is the extended scarecrow dance, and it's really a shame. All of the scenes should never have been cut...But its still amazing that the only deleted scene that still has footage has been kept in the same quality as the movie itself. The movie looks like it was made yesterday on DVD, and so does the scarecrow dance.

Anyway, I know there's an edit of the film with the scarecrow dance, but I'd love to see all the deleted scenes in there. But, sadly, it's impossible...

First Impressions of the OOT ...
Time
Now that I've seen all of Star Wars...

The first half looked great, and so did the second....except for the fact that I could see lots of matte lines in the scene after they escape the death star and have that firefight in space, and in the final death star scene. They were a little distracting, but a lot less notable then on my bootlegs. Can't wait to watch ESB.

And to anyone who hasn't bought these yet...do it, especially if all you have is VHS. And get the Best Buy Tin. It's the best way to keep the films. The tin will never wear out like a box, and it looks awesome. Plus, its pretty slim and will fit on any shelf with ease.
