Are Sebastian Shaw & Clive Revill still alive?

Adam, this is your response to 90% of comments on Lucas' changes and heres my problems with it.

He should care about all the people that helped him make the movies (and im not talking fans here, im talking actors and special effects artists). And what he is doing is cutting all their hard work out of the movie, and by not making the originals available he's basically taking away their work. and i dont care what you say, but Star Wars (as with any movie) does not have its success or failure by one person alone it has the work of all the people, and just because Lucas owns star wars doesnt necessarily give him the right to start chopping (or just replacing) other peoples work on it because he sees fit. I think as far as most people on this board are concerned, he can change the movie all he wants, but he should still make the original versions available, partly because fact of the matter is if those versions werent as beloved as they are, you probably wouldnt even know the name of George Lucas.

Additionally, you always talke about his right to change his films. First, i dont think you can say Clive Reville respects his right to change the films, without speaking to Clive and asking him (not saying you stated it as fact). He cause also sound like he could care less simply because he doesnt. Not everyone (actors that were in it included) cares about Star Wars. Maybe he just doesnt care what lucas does, maybe he realize Lucas wont listen to anyone else on it so why bother, or maybe he does care, but is so pissed at lucas for removing him from the movie that he'd rather not get into those issues and just 'shrug off' the questions related to them.

Also, your arguement doesnt really help the cause, first because its overused but more importantly, saying Lucas doesnt care about what anyone else thinks makes him seem like the bratty child that brings the ball to the field, and when everyone wants to play kick ball and he wants to play dodge ball, or his team is loosing, or something else isnt going his way he picks up his ball and leaves because 'its my ball and that means what i say goes, and if you dont like it im not gonna play and im taking my ball with me'

The Star Wars Saga - From a newcomer's point of view
Time
I find it interesting that the author is an authority on how everyone else ever viewed the movies before the PT. Coments like this "(something that no one felt watching it the old way, because they may have thought Vader was lying)" totally take away from any credibility that the author may have had because he assumes that they know all the emotions everyone felt while watching it. I thought Vader's revolution was pretty powerful before the PT, it still meant alot to Luke, the Jedi, and even the galaxy.

the other parts i have problems with are the 'i wouldnt have been able to watch EPIV because its too slow' type comments. How old was the person that watched the movies in 1-6 order? thats important because it shows what kinda of movies they grew up in. Movies during my parents time arent as action packed as movies nowadays. when i watch those old world war II movies that my dad enjoys i sometimes find them slow, but i still enjoy them (for the most part) even though they are in black and white and ancient. I think the fact that the person didnt watch any star wars movies up until this point is also telling because it shows they had no real interest in the story. there is enough info out there that even a star wars 'virgin' will have a basic idea of the story and if that story interested you you would most likely go out and see it. Her comments about having an emotional attatchment (are these her words or not, she seems to be analyzing the movie pretty intensly to not realize how powerful the story of Episode IV really is) to the PT characters comes off more to me as she enjoyed the PT movies more because of their flashy effects and packed action sequences because it kept her attention (this has nothing to do with the actual story, good or bad) which is what seems to be a general trend in hollywood (which sometimes i admit works on me, I fell asleep during the original Italian Job (how many people here even knew about the original, probably more than the general public cause this crowd tends to be into movies in general but i think you see my point), but love the remake)

and all of her, 'realizations' and 'emotional attatchments' that are made to sound like they only occur if you see the PT first. for instance
"When Yoda first appeared and acted senile, she found it amusing and took it as his technique of making sure that things are done right with Luke"
well first, im sure not everyone who saw the OT first was suprised when he declared himself as Yoda. And duh, thats the whole point...hes one of the greatest (if not the greatest) jedi to ever live. after you find out its him and his whole attitude changes do you really think you were supposed to think that he was really senile or that he was testing Lukes patients ("I cant train him, he has no patients"). That was intended from the start and you dont need the PT to tell you that.

I could probably go on, but i think you get the idea.

*edit* some new posts were posted while i was typing this. I totally disagree with the "how they were meant to be seen" comments. If that is truely how they were meant to be seen, why not make the PT first (or at least have the story) how many other movie series do you know that have a trilogy or saga and release (create) the films in 2, 1, 3 order (or any crazy variation thereof) and even if the second takes place before the first, its still the 2nd. Id at least give that statement some credibility if the story for the PT was at least outlined before making A New Hope. Just cause it has the title Episode IV (added after, can argue the reasons) doesnt mean it was thought of 4th and meant to be watched 4th. It just means Lucas wanted to make it appear to be some large story that you enter in the middle of and see only one part.

.: The XØ Project - Laserdisc on Steroids :. (SEE FIRST POST FOR UPDATES) (* unfinished project *)
Time
But the fixing the star field is restoring stars that were lost when it was put onto laserdisc due to the limited number of scan lines available.

they arent cleaning up laser blasts for the complete preservationist version. they are correcting the colors (of the entire film) to match what the colors were when it was shown in theaters (it seems they have some good information as to the true color of the scenes).

the only things they are 'fixing' is the things that were messed up when the movie was put onto the laser disc and underwent the thx remastering.

then, from there, they will have their own project if they desire where they fix matte lines, or lightsabers.

at least, thats my understanding, correct me if im wrong.

preservation has nothing to do with Lucas' 'original vision' it has to do what he originally showed. If it was the former than lucas could call his 2004 edits preservation which they are clearly not. Preservation preserves the 'warts and all' so that the film is shown just as they were able to get it when they showed it, it keeps the 'mistakes/errors' that were caused by the limitations of the technology of that time.

If you could decide on the next release of the DVD's.
Time
This seems to be a recurring topic in its simplest form and many times the answer is number 2, the utlimate box set with seamless branching to give SE's and OOT on each disc for all the movies.

My choice would be either the above, full 6 movie set, each movie having both theatrical and SE versions on it. I wont even go into bonus discs as this gets crazy (disc for each movie, each trilogy, whole saga, it would get quite big)

or the other way i would go would be like what Gaffer Tape said. I would have released a collectors set instead of the bear bones re-release (think 3 and 4 combined). Since its a collectors set you could probably charge more for it. I would have it as the original movies, unaltered in all respects except to be cleaned up to represent what was shown theatrically. Then there would also be (side 2?) a version that is still the OOT but has all the Matte lines and other effects cleaned up.

there are so many options he could do because there is so much material to release. The ultimate set would be like the to do something along the lines of the Ultimate matrix set. if this was done for all 6 movies it would be huge, as that was a 10 disc set that had each movie, an extra disc for each movie, an overall extra disc (i think), the animatrix, and a few other discs. But a prequal set and ot set could be released and the boxes could have stand alone images that when put together make a saga image. and even make a box sleeve available by mail with proofs of purchase if you buy the OT and PT. man, im not even in marketing\sales and i could go crazy with all the possibilities.

Get rid of the internet!

Guys, ric was actually dead on with thinking this is fake and it reminding him of a joke on GTA3.

back with GTA3 (the last one i played) I remember the Petsovernight commercial and they had their website in the commercial http://www.petsovernight.com/ go to it, its 'real' Rockstar Games puts up these fake websites for the fake companies they make up for the fake commercials they have in their games

http://www.thegtaplace.com/links.php

look in the (roughly) center of the page and you'll see a link for C.U.N.T.

Silly Pics
Time
Just jumped into this thread to see if any good pics were posted this weekend (sean wookie, ytmnd obviously blocks people from externally linking their pics, so either save them and rehost them somewhere or dont link them at all, every other post being a ytmnd pic is annoying)

but anyway, saw the convo about paris hilton being plastic and it reminded me of this 'news' i saw this weekend, think it was on dateline, anyway some lady got plastic surgery to make herself look like barbie (i couldnt make this up if i tried) if i come across anylinks ill post them

The DVDs on Ebay
Time
Like the good reverend said, dont buy off ebay. First, most of the sets that are on ebay originated from people on here (actually, i think there is really only 2 or 3 different sets sold on ebay for the most part)

second, I find pm's tend to be inefficient in most cases because, especially when its someone that gets a lot of them (like people who supply discs) their pm box gets full and they cant always respond to pms. I know some people have it in their signature to email them, and I know that for me its easier to respond to an email, and less likely that it will get 'lost' in the shuffle and accidently ignored. when compared to a pm

also, like reverend also said, why is that one promising? only thing i saw on that was that it had images on the disc, there was very minimal information about it.

the other option is to get one via a torrent if you have a dvd burner.

Blade Runner OV vs. DC

but could a director not want to make a film that fans love. in that case what the fans want should be taken into consideration.

thats why studios have screenings and then go back and make changes (hence the VO in Blade Runner) The studios finance the movie so why shouldnt what they want matter? If the fans arent gonna go see it the studios wont green light it (Ok, well if the studios dont think the fans will want to see it) and it wont get made, so shouldnt that be taken into consideration at least a little?

also, what about the writers (including creators of the characters, ie for comics) of the story? surely they should have more say in it than the director as they are the ones that came up with the vision in the first place. (not saying this applies here)

and is it what the directed wanted or what he wants. (Lucas wants SW as he's making it now, he wanted it as he made it in 77. Part of his wants back then were for the fans to accept it so it made money, now he doesnt care about what the fans want)

finally, no one has argued that one version is better/superior in any way. Sure people have said "I prefer xxxx version" but they stated it as their opinion. You asked about preserving a cut of a movie that in you're opinion was shitty and why people would want that. well first off, preservation has nothing to do with the quality of the movie, it has to do with keeping the movie (available) in its original form. This has been told to you before. People here arent saying only make the Theatrical available or only make the DC availble, they are saying make both available. Preserve the version that was shown in theatres. ok, release directors cuts or extended cuts if you want. make those available, but dont throw away the theatrical because original vision or not, thats how some people first saw it and thats how some people prefer it.

Idea: MR. & MRS. SMITH - fan edit...
Time
I dont know if id say the movie really sucked. Though i may have a slight biased since when i saw it it was on my first date with my gf :-p . Hence why I want to see it again. I mean, I can see where there is definatly room for improvement, and how it can also take a different turn. In general i think action movies have too much superhero stuff in them, so i can see what boon23 is saying there. But I think compared to alot of the recent movies that I've seen in theaters this one was def one of the best (note: i dont actually see as many movies as id like to in the theater).

I think they were going for a "he said she said" type style with the Counciling scenes. But i can definatly see an edit without this.

Laptop Briefcases?
Time
My current one is a Kelty, but I had a Jansport before that. I got mine through my college with the laptop. Not sure what brand they have now, but pretty sure they've been using Keltys ever since the first year (when i had the jansport).

I agree with bossk about the being targeted thing, part of the reason i like my backpack and suggested it. Unfortunatly while on campus this wasnt the situation cause everyone had one, though if they had the laptop in it is another story.

The nice thing with the kelty (and jansport to some extent) is that it has 2 compartments, so you can have books in the other. they both also have a padded section where the laptop goes. The kelty also has the ability to take that section out completly and the part where it connects to the bag can then have a strap attacthed to it and can be carried as just the laptop (not all that usefull really (at least imho) but it taking it out lets you use it as a regular bag (which you can do with it in, but you get a bit more space when its out) )

WTF?

One of the developers, the head guy, was the one behind supplying the kids with the assault rifles they were using to commit the crimes. he wanted to create hype for the game, i guess because controversy sells video games. and what better way to get controversy then to have some people mirror your game and go on a killing spree, at least that seemed to be his take on it.

I didnt mean they dont have a plot, i meant a linear plot. the game on the show had different levels. I realize GTA has missions but while some need a previous mission completed first, there are still multiple missions at the same time and there isnt necessarily one thing that needs to be done next. ie do A then do B then do C. obviously without this in the 'made up' game the csi team would never have been able to figure out the criminals next move.

anyway, my point was that while i have no love for the GTA games (they are all pretty much the same thing and not very entertaining imho) I dont agree that they cause violence and thought that the show wasnt very fair in that respect as it seemed to be putting that message out there.

Thank You Jay,OPPO Digital DVD Player
Time
wow, that player looks just like what i was looking for. PAL and NTSC and it plays divx/xvid and mpeg file formats.

I dont really need the high end outputs as I only have a basic tv and prob wont get (be able to afford) anything all that great for a while anyway. Id take them anyway, but id also settle for a slightly cheaper version that didnt have the upscaling and high end video outputs.

if only i had the money to spend on it

Video Games - a general discussion thread

but as segaflip said, the first versions are the easiest to "play" with.

anyway, slightly changing the subject. Dont know if anyone here watches CSI but I happened to catch it last night (CSI: Miami) and the case was one I found interesting, but also thought it seemed like it was written by that Jack Thomson (think thats his name)

anyway, the premise was that there were these kids (college students) who were mimicking a game in real life (with the 'unoffical' backing of the developer to 'promote' sales) but the thing that irritated me most about it was that the game was blatently obviously meant to be GTA. The box that they showed for it looked exactly like the GTA box except that the name on it was different, but that wasnt that noticible until they actualy said the games name. The graphics looked just like GTA, the only difference was that this game had a set 'plot' that played through chronologically where the GTA games dont really have that.

now I dont really enjoy the GTA games that much, I've played them a little but really just driving around and get bored of them quite easily, so its not like i have some super love of the game that im defending it, but the statement that the show seemed to be making was what got me. It was essentially an hour of game cause violence.

If the show was spouting utter bull shit about some company making false accusations there would be more lawsuits, faster than...actually, the show would never have aired because it would have been pulled from the season lineup before its debut. Same as if it had a 'bad stereotype' about some 'minority' group. But its ok as it was because 'video games cause violence' and everyone knows its true.

such crap.

anyway, opinions, comments. really i just felt the need to vent about it some. Dont get me wrong i enjoyed the show from an entertainment standpoint but the 'politcal' crap it was spewing just really got to me cause i know its gonna convince some people that video games really do cause violence, what about the 'great game idea' that the show gave all of our emotionaly unbalanced pscyhopaths.
