Can a Laptop Blu-Ray Burner not be able to Burn Dual Layer DVD Rs?
Time

Almost five years ago I got new laptop. I thought "It's gonna be great" having a DL burner in my laptop. I was stoked

What a piece of junk!

Actually it's a Slimtype model, built by LiteOn. The hardware itself should have been 'good enough' but the firmware spoils it.
You see it's "specially customized for Gateway" firmware. That means brain-dead, certain features disabled, and the like.
For example most LiteOn drives, with LiteOn firmware, are capable to change the book-type bit on DVD+R media. Gateway firmware won't do it, and here's the rub: Gateway ain't offering any firmware updates!

Back on topic, Can you give us any more clues besides "laptop" ?
A vendor name like Gateway probably won't be enough.
Can you tell us the drive's make/model, and especially its firmware version?
If you're running Windows, you might find that in Device Manager.
Or better yet, ImgBurn should give it to you straight.

Does your drive use a laptop vendor's proprietary firmware?
Does that vendor offer firmware updates?
Is it possible to flash your drive with drive manufacturer's firmware, instead of laptop vendor's "custom" version?

Info Wanted: Pre-'93 Japanese Special Collection LD transfers?
Time

msycamore said: And sequels... did they have the same issue as SW? or do sequels mean something else in this case?

sequels mean ESB & ROTJ wearing SWE jackets, mastered by Technidisc in 1993-94
To my knowledge, they didn't suffer any 'incredible shrinking ratio' like ANH, so maybe they were never remastered, or retelecine or whatever.
It's possible they're made from same master tape as earlier Pioneer pressing SWE, and presumably JSC, so they'd be missing few frames between reels in that case.

On the other hand, if they'd been remastered from '93 telecine they should indclude (nearly) all frames as GOUT, but without THX smear. [This appears to be the case for ANH, at first glance anyway.]
They were cheap enough, so I decided to take the chance and try to answer that question. This is the hypothesis, to prove or disprove...

Maybe you should go back and read Post 8 of that thread.
It doesn't keep any secrets.
Red5 nailed it in Post 7 and I came clean in 8
Catalog number, and even the mint markings of my LD are in the LDDB link provided.

And do you know what else? That ANH LD isn't so lonely anymore. It now has sequels sitting beside it, which I've received from eBay this past week, both also coming from the same Technidisc factory in the post-DC era, and without THX certification.
Haven't watched 'em yet -- we'll see if they're 'interesting' like the first one...

Dark-Sega JSC trilogy is on a.b.starwars since October.
Don't know if that's what zombie84 is talking about.
It's 4:3 letterbox not anamorphic, 30fps interlaced not IVTC'ed.
Preservations of SWE LD's by dark_jedi and Rikter are also 4:3 & 30fps

Zion threatened to upload some of the raw X0 captures.
If he's gonna do that, I'd rather see the JSC ones than any THX/DC/Face

Make mine Coke with cane sugar, Senor!
Have only sampled the Catnip -- scanned for all five reel change cues, including the coference room. All present and accounted right where they're expected to be.
Do you think the shape of the cue dots, anamorphically stretched and all, can offer clues about being 35mm source or 16mm reduction?

Color bars don't seem to have any pluge -- is that right terminology?
Is it useful for luma adjustments, or merely chroma?

They don't have the interviews that were on the DC though; most of the earlier fan transfers didn't either, but there is a bonus disc out there that someone made with the interviews collected on it, but it's probably hard to find. Frankly, the bonus material was equally parts weak and short so you aren't really missing much, just pull out your Laserdisc if you want to watch them.

Dr_Gonzo's fourth disc (Supplemental Materials) has nearly all that stuff from DC preserved.
And another 4th disc by Farsight @myspleen.
Those two might not be so hard to find . . . from a certain point of view

Out of curiosity and I apologize for getting a bit off-topic but has there ever been a preservation/transfer of that first issue VHS rental tape: both video and audio? I can't seem to find a thread about a transfer of it.

Complete Comparison of Special Edition Visual Changes

Treadwell said:

1. There was some discussion of missing or extra frames here and there, namely fading out/in to Threepio in the oilbath, or the TIEs approaching the Death Star in comp 60. These are reel change points--as such, it is common for one transfer to have a few frames more or less than another, as they have to be either put together later in the video realm, or the reels edited together in real time during the telecine.

Welcome aboard, Treadwell

I've done a bit of research myself on reel changeover points, so my ears perked up when I read that part of your message.
Shirley the oilbath is the start of a reel. We have glaring evidence in the form of a motor cue dot after Threepio's line "...beyond my capacity" in one of the telecine bootlegs.
However, I'll join with msycamore in questioning your assertion that 60 is a changeover point. It doesn't match my findings.

Treadwell said:

they are the kind of thing that will be found between every transfer ever made (not just original/SE),
That's the method I've used in my research -- I compared every transfer ever made ;) ;) ;)
No but I compared several laserdiscs, and noted the differences.
Somewhere around here I've compiled my findings into a thread called 'reel lengths' or something like that. As I said in there, corrections are certainly welcome. If you can set me straight, I'm all ears. Treadwell, can you offer any clues why you believe 60 is a reel change?

The Mono Mix Restoration Project (Released)

Way to go hairy_hen!
Don't forget the original WAV contains extra RIFF chunks, besides the canonical ones. Way back then for its initial distribution, Moth3r chose WavPack to preserve those extra chunks because old FLAC versions won't.
Nowadays modern FLAC versions can do it, just be sure to use the --keep-foreign-metadata option.

For whatever it's worth, m48 dvd.wav's so-called FLAC fingerprint (FFP) is something like:
F9AA ... 12C9

Y'all sound like LFL with your relaxed QC standards.

The color-blind might tell you: Don't bother with the color timing.
Tone-deaf ones could say PAL speedup isn't an issue, yet others are bothered by it.
The ones who can detect ~60ms time-shift will call your support hotline to complain, and then what will you tell them?
"deliberate creative decision"

Let's put an end to this "perpetuation of amateurism" ha ha ha

Info: Star Wars Laser Disc 1989 I found the same problem in the 1992 version "Incredible Shrinking Ratio"
Time

It's one of those things I might've read before, maybe when Moth3r posted the link,
but that was a long time ago ... and I hadn't acquired my DC yet.
I'm glad none posted it again; I enjoyed reading it (again) from an owner's perspective.
Pulled out my ROTJ to check Jabba subs (they're wrong) and also the three flaws mentioned on side 5 got me curious.
Here's one of them, which confirms what I've already suspected by the missing Leia welding, that mine is the flawed early pressing:

http://img827.imageshack.us/img827/1806/23895.png

Also want to thank Moth3r for the Mitsubishi screen caps. With younglings about, it's impressive you've found the time to do it.
In my own mind I'm quite skeptical that Mitsubishi ever pressed a corrected one. It would've meant cutting new masters and retooling their presses.
By the time that might've taken to do that, I suspect the contract had already been given to Technidisc.

This bit from the top of that flaw list caught my eye:

THX.htm said:

As some of you have heard, the non-THX CLV versions of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi have been put on moratorium. The THX box set however is still available. New THX-certified, CLV vers- ions of the THX masters are being released in a few weeks.

Written in 1995 anticipating the 'face' releases, that would mean the Technidisc SWE 'fixed' pressings were in print for two full years, from Summer'93 to Summer'95

If someone can post the exact delay value, that would be good.

Yes he did. satanika, I reckon
It's on usenet 544 days. 549 as I'm typing this
Search 'audio for GOUT projects' belbucus_delay_values.png
If that doesn't work, send me PM

Use that value if-and-only-if Harmy's STAR WARS card appear at frame 689, like NTSC GOUT.
(690th frame, since first frame is called 0 -- I'm going by memory here, so double-check)

If Harmy's title card comes something other than 689, I'm confident you'll get it sorted...

I'll just use Belbucus' stereo PCM re-encoded to AC-3, unless people really want his 5.1 upmix. :-)
Wee bit confused here, since Belbucus didn't do a 5.1 (did he?)
Were you thinking of applying prologic algorithms yourself to Belbucus' PCM?

On the off-chance you're looking at the 5.1 upmix posted to usenet 544 days, be aware it's hairy_hen's not Belbucus', and it's obsolete, superseded...

Harmy said:

Perhaps it would be good to use the 5.1 to keep suit with Ady's Empire.
hairy_hen's recent upgrade seems a no-brainer in that case.
What bitrate did satanika use for that one? Would it fit on DVD5?
