Yeah, I assumed he meant the '92 letterbox set (the one I have with burn marks).

What other set has the burn marks? When you first mentioned them, you referred to them as "our old friends".

I meant the PAL THX LD's (French & German) like Citizen, Moth3r & most recently Lee Thorogood have preserved, have them. "Old friends" refer to Moth3r's & Citizen's preservations from several years back, when I was first introduced to the burns.

In my current line of thinking (wild-ass educated guess) this Technidisc pressing LD and Asaki's 1992 widescreen VHS are likely the same transfer/master, and I'd suspect they're missing the same frames at reel changeovers, same 2:3 pulldown cadence, same cropping, etc...

Warning: the colars are not fixxed!

English translation:
Capture card settings (hue, contrast, etc.) are leftover from whenever the last time I used the card.
This time I've made no attempt to match the colorbars at the end of side 3 on this disc.

Cropping along righthand edge could be caused by the card/settings.
If I was running Windows, I could try that BT8x8 tweaker program to change my back porch value, or whatever they call it.

Got a different capture card I can try (tomorrow?) . . . although I wouldn't expect the top edge to be any different.

Not sure why you'd think that? Because it hasn't happened yet?
If he said on Jan 19 he'd do it, doesn't mean he'd do it on Jan 19. Know what I mean?

There might be other reasons. I don't pretend to know what's going on with Zion or other team members.
I just hope lack of time or lack of bandwidth aren't the only reasons, as I was quite serious to help in Post 2282. But there's nothing special about me in that regard. Expect others would too

Would you believe I don't own that model?
No really

Wonder if it contains Sony's CXD1125, 1135 or CXD2500 chip inside?
The first two have the digital audio signal on pin 27. With CXD2500 you'd tap pin 60 to get it.

Seems likely D504 has one of those chips in; however, this site suggests it would probably be mounted on the under side of the motherboard.

I got lucky doing the mod on my CLD-S201, since the audio is on a daughter card (mounted vertically) giving easy access to both sides of the circuit board. It's a bottom-feeder in features and probably picture quality too, but I only use it for ripping. For that purpose, bit-accurate is good enough.

With basic soldering skills, adding S/PDIF can be fairly easy on some players.
If D504's your new one, what's the old?

Capturing vs. Ripping

is a matter of semantics. Hope I'm not being pedantic.

You could capture the signal, as hairy_hen described, from the left/right red/white RCA jacks.

Or you could rip it from D504's S/PDIF port, which also uses an RCA-style socket.

More expensive players like CLD-D704, which offer both the RCA-style S/PDIF port
as well as the optical fiber style (Toshiba's TosLink), are expected to give identical data from either port.

So yes, theoretically you could rip PCM or DTS (but not AC3) from your S/PDIF port as long as you've got computer hardware & software which supports doing it.
Typically you'd have to jump through some hoops to prevent Windows sabotaging your efforts.

Before people get too much more excited about the idea of disseminating the X0 capture, I think it would be worth considering just what an enormous amount of data we're talking about here. Even a dual-layer DVD wouldn't be capable of containing two hours of *uncompressed* video. You guys want to mail each other DV cassettes, fine, but expecting an online upload is pretty unrealistic.

Big upload? Sure. Why unrealistic?
Sometimes I find myself Dreaming of being the guy to try it.
Wow what a thrill, not to mention what an honor that would be...

They're DVD5
Where are you seeing ~1GiB ? (screenshot?)
Each *.VOB file is that size (VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VOB, VTS_01_3.VOB, etc...)
Now I'm confused

They're DVD5 from segaflip, old-skool snail-mail, long time ago...
*.SFV file is from segaflip. Use it to verify, along with *.PAR2 file(s)
I, along with others I'm sure, would try to assist usenet n00bs in such matters.
I'm not so good with Windows software tho

Also, I'm new to the Newsgroup thing, so, if I get a subscription, then I can download anything on a.b. starwars, right?

It doesn't have to be a monthly subscription! I think it's important for people to realize, you can do one-time purchase. Say $10 or $25 (best deal perhaps) and your unused credits never expire!
So you'll get the old Dark-Sega set right now.
And if by chance dark_jedi's testing phase takes longer than expected (Hey, I'm just sayin' ... it could happen) well no worries, because your unused 'minutes' won't expire on Astraweb.

I'm not a salesman, really

And I'll admit, I haven't explained it at all.

Each column is a release, mostly LaserDiscs, except the newest version of that spreadsheet I've inserted a column for Video Collector's ESB_TP also.
Each row is, or strives to be, the same frame of film.
In the GOUT column, those are the frame numbers you'd see in Virtualdub or Avidemux for example, with STAR WARS title card appearing at 688.
For example in GOUT 15585, you look for a '7' pattern beside R2, formed by motion blur in the snowflake trails.

Other columns, those are the frame numbers (actually more akin to 'frame labels' which we talked about briefly in another thread) that you'd see if you turn on your LD player's on-screen display, while in freeze-frame mode.

Yellow cells are missing frames, in that release, or half-missing in some cases.
JSC is missing the most (6.5 frames, or 13 fields) at that first 1000-ft reel change shown in the example.
Both SWE pressing (Techinidisc & Pioneer) are quite similar here, missing exactly the same frames/field although the labels are skewed.

There's more to it, regarding telecine cadence (which frames are 3's and which are 2's in the pulldown pattern) that I'll try to explain later, maybe in my 'reel change' thread.
Earlier in this thread we wondered if JSC & SWE are from the same source?
Well, if their respective pulldowns are out-of-step, they cannot be from the same telecine session.

Anybody interested in hearing more, or will I have no choice but to cancel this project? </offTopicJediTrayRefernce>

Actually, the PAL GOUT has a tiny bit of extra (verticle?) detail. I thought it was just the exact same as the NTSC for years, but there is a difference apparent in some shots, though it is almost imperceptible.

I've thought that's been the consensus around these parts regarding ROTJ.
Just to be perfectly clear (and painfully obvious, after all GOUT implies Trilogy(3), do you see additional detail in the other two films as well?

Thanks everybody for your replies.
As luck would have it, I've found just the answer I was looking for straight from the horse's mouth
Yeah, I just called Donald Graft a horse :)

Now after reading his replies (#10 & #12), I do understand the differences between them. And yes, both methods do have Cons as well as Pros.
It's funny though, I never would've classified myself a 'power user' as Chew calls it; nevertheless, I'll say with certainty that 'Ignore' is correct for what I'm doin'

Make an informed choice

I did a little reading around and found this page.

The clips I posted here & here were produced using exactly the method you've described.
CAV discs, player in still mode, with RS-232 commands telling when to step.

Yes an entire side could be done that way if automated, but I can tell you from experience it turned out not to be the panacea it first seemed.
Here's some hints why:

CAV discs with incorrect white

[...]
It is possible to make a CAV disc that can
properly freeze every original 24 fps source frame. Unfortunately, some
producers don't bother,

The edit sheet
that needs to be filled out can be very complicated and time consuming.

The flags are as (in)accurate as the human who assigned them.
All humans make mistakes, sometimes more that others.

Want to see a real-life example of a bad white flag?
Pull out your JSC ANH, cue up side 2, and freeze on frame 17087
Tell the others what you see...

Force Film ... This option works by ignoring pulldown flags and inserting/removing frames to maintain a constant and sync'ed output stream.

That "inserting/removing frames" bit has always scared me from using Force Film.
I've usually chosen 'Ignore' instead because I don't want any frames removed. Do I?
Why would one want frames removed? Wouldn't it cause herky-jerky playback?
I just don't understand why or when, under what conditions Force Film might decide to remove some frames.
And when/why would frames be inserted? Where would the inserted frames come from? Repeats? Again sounds like a recipe for herky-jerky motion to my pea brain.
Is it even safe to use Force Film?

Info Wanted: My chance to buy an X9... (Pioneer HLD-X9 LD player)
Time

About two months ago at another website I frequent there's a fellow who had a chance to buy an HLD-X0 from a consignment shop in Hong Kong where he lives.
Asking price was US$1700. The guy already has a nice Japan-only model (LD-X1 if I recall) so he passed.
However he did purchase the Faroudja scaler from the same seller. I seem to recall Laserman telling us a high-end player through a scaler like that might lead to incontinence!
