The SWOLT ANHV8 Preservation Project (* unfinished project *)
Time

Welcome here!

You're starting with V8 DVD?
Instead of MPEG-2, why not start with lossless X9 capture?
I'ts available on Usenet.

To one of your questions, V8 (and X9 and JSC in general) are missing quite a few frames compared to GOUT.
Surrounding reel changeovers, and also mid-reel.
The missing frame numbers are documented in my IVTC script for X9 cap, which is also on usenet.

Help: looking for... Lossless mono/stereo audio
Time

Got Usenet ?

Searching "Audio for GOUT projects" should find you Belbucus' mono
and also his '77 Dolby stereo captured from analog laserdisc 1130-84.

Search "diGital SOUND" and you might find my raw (44.1kHz) PCM rips of laserdiscs
ROTJ 14780-80 and TESB SWE 1425-85, both pressed by Pioneer, USA.
Those are generally understood to contain theatrical mixes, although it's hard to be 100% certain.
(Other LD pressings might also contain those same mixes in higher fidelity.)

Looking at RotJ newscasts found the first of the cue markers for that film:

http://fd.noneinc.com/Reel_Changes/1983-Reel_Change-WABC7NewsTWC29959-3_4-In-b.jpg

Odd that newscasts would have been given a telecine of an actual 35mm print. The scene is where Leia and Luke jump onto the speeder bikes pursuing the escaping Scout Troopers. About 53:00-56:00 minutes in. (dependent upon version) Unsure if this pic is from the In or Out marker section.
Dunno if it's "In or Out" but wikipedia calls it "motor cue"

Then extrapolating with PAL GOUT frame numbers:

83176 - 83179 .............. motor cue
83180 - 83347 .............. (168 frames)
83348 - 83351 .............. changeover cue
83352 - 83375 .............. ( 24 frames)
83376 - ..............next reel. I have foreseen it in Post_3 :)

Curious about Certain Aspects of My (Primitive) LD to DVD transfers
Time

msycamore, is your Pioneer made in Japan or USA factory?
I've got one from PVI in California, as well as Technidisc copy.

Now that I think about it, seems I never finished ripping the PCM audio from Technidisc.
IIRC got sides 1&2 then became distracted before finishing side3.
Perhaps I should pull it out again and try some screen grabs...

OBITUARY - Star Wars Fullscreen/Pan and Scan versions. R.I.P.
Time

Earlier in this thread on Post 33 I offered my IVTC script
for dark_jedi's "Standard Play" preservation of CAV laserdisc 1130-84.
By mistake I omitted this field:
http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/2439/60083.th.png

So I've made a revised script and posted on a.b.starwars too.

http://img214.imageshack.us/img214/598/27510.png
above is dark_jedi's Standard Play - LD 1130-84
----
below is The Starkiller's 1982 Video Rental Library - VHS
http://img443.imageshack.us/img443/598/27510.png

Look at the overscan along the right edges. Then look at Threepio's wrists.
It can't be a coincidence -- I think those two are from the same telecine master tape!
But my conclusion isn't based solely one that one frame...

Recently-finished IVTC/GOUT-sync script for theStarkiller's VHS is there and also usenet.

If you study both scripts, you'll notice that both home video releases
are missing exactly the same frames&fields at every reel change
and a few that occur mid-reel, like the Obi-Wan field shown above "You'd've been killed too..."

Great! Do tell if you find any errors, I want to know.

Although they're not listed here in this thread, I also have compiled
the first frame of the last shot on each reel, and
the last frame of the first shot on each reel.

Perhaps those data would be useful when it's time to combine the individual VOB files
that you were working in the other thread.

Puggo GRANDE - 16mm restoration (Released)

How'd you figure out the compliance/non-compliance? Have you been counting frames between cues?!!!

Yes!???
In the first example [...taken your first step into a larger world.]
there's 169 frames between 'motor run' and 'reel changeover'. Should have been 168.
And there's only 23 after 'reel change' instead of 24.
That's what I meant non-compliant (probably shouldn't be hyphenated but I have a bad habit that way.)

In the second example of Han/Chewie, Moth3r's preservation show two sets of 'motor run' dots.
There is my 'simulated filmstrip' view of it.
The second set of dots is compliant (200 frames from reel end.) First set just wrong.
GRANDE doesn't have those. Catnap might as your screenshot showed--maybe it's too cropped to tell.

Harmy's RETURN OF THE JEDI Despecialized Edition HD - V3.1
Time

fist two weren't ISOs, were they?

If you don't mind downloading again, you could get the unpacked BDMV folder from usenet or myspleen.
Their contents are the same as Harmy's ISO.

If you're concerned about bandwidth, or concerned about wasting your time and energy downloading again,
then you might want to check your ISO for corruption first:

i thought about combining them all into 1 VOB file first.

but i didn't think it would make a difference..

obviously it does..

In general, the VOB files aren't split along GOP boundaries.
I guess it's possible to do so, but probably rarely seen in the real world.
If you notice all the VOB files being the same size, that's a pretty good indicator they're not split into whole GOPs.
It's a big project you've got (not to mention your other projects!)
so if you like to work on it one step at a time I certainly understand.

You're right, the fade-outs can be a judgement call.
Although in this particular case, the example given, I didn't pull those numbers from thin air.
They're calculated by counting forward from the cue dots. SMPTE-55 tells us there should be 24 frames after the last dot.

I admire your dedication, but your method is flawed.
If you consider each VOB file separately, you'll omit some frames.
Looks like you're missing three frames in this case.

00:00:03.795 0 91 p c3po fading in (start vob2 - part 2/2) total 29758
00:00:15.056 92 361 p luke in repair room
You've got 281 + 39 + 26 + 92 = 438 frames

On the other hand, if you concatenate the VOB files first
or if you use DGIndex, then you'll get:

27524 --> 27836 r2d2 joins luke and c3po
27837 --> 27964 c3po fading in
27965 --> luke in repair room

27965 - 27524 = 441 so you've missed 3 frames

Yeah, they're not exactly the same.
Post 14 in this thread describes some difference

Two things:

1) You have in the IE DVD post 1 (or on the backcover) all the detail: film version cut / or not. It doesn't entirely match with the current SET 2 then. Great for the DVD, but for a CD listening experience you'll curse me for sure, haha !

2) The PCM audio has been converted from 44,1Khz to 48Khz. Sure that a new convertion to 44,1Khz will mess up the tracks.

Note: only "Losing a Hand" has been left as edited for the film on Set 2. I think it really gives a better cue. It misses only two tiny bits that are welcome out, and the editing between the many segues is better done (more dynamic) than on the original.

Try giving Toast the ISO file, not the m2ts.

Shirley!

Sorry for off-topic.

Hey Harmy in the first reel, shouldn't STAR WARS title card appear on frame 689?
You had it on 688 in the workprint.
Besides that, I found your GOUT-sync most impressive!
