This space for rentSo if your digitized versions don't look very good, anybody else want to attempt preservations of the 1995 UK fullscreen tapes then?
For any other films, I would never want to see P&S versions, but for the OUT I'd be interesting in seeing the '95 PAL fullscreens / any PAL fullscreens due to the high level of detail in the starfields...

I'd like to thank this trailer for teaching me all I needed to know about widescreen vs Pan & Scan:

If you were really want to see some PAL Fullscreen action, drop me a PM and we can see if we can arrange a loan or something.... However, trust me, they are not very good quality!!
Also, expanding this even further, are there any preservations of any more 1983 to 1992 ANH, 1984 to 1992 ESB and 1986 to 1992 ROTJ US NTSC Fullscreen VHS/Beta tapes out there - even just for screen shot comparison purposes against the LD's, THX VHS, SE VHS, DVD and various PAL VHS??

Where am I????Oh well. It is a shame that many in the US still have difficulty with PAL DVD's. How about avi's instead? Could you play those?

Where am I????Great news. All we need now is a few gaps filling in with the early US NTSC VHS releases.........
I now have the ANH Fullscreen US NTSC DVD with ESB on the way and will put up a few comparison shots shortly.

THC-1138 meets TK-420AviSynth script for IVTC'ing dark_jedi's "Standard Play" preservation (1130-84)
Here's how it works:
On the left is GOUT frame number, source frame number on right side (because source clip is BFF.)
Of course you can disable the ShowFrameNumber() in the script. Use an editor with a fixed-width font!
If you plan to feed this to an encoder, then mind DGDecode's colorspace conversion (upConv=2) in the first line.
More info Usenet too
Like my earlier JSC script, this one also skips backward in time as Threepio gets in the bath
and again at daybreak when Uncle Owen calls for Luke.
Some of those frames should be replaced by Blackness() but which ones? You decide
144053 was a deliberate creative decision. NTSC GOUT-sync is preserved.
27510 is not my fault
Bug reports will be appreciated
However, in practice you must take into account the "fuckwit factor". Just talk to Darth Mallwalker...

Where am I????Been looking forward to this.
Unfortunately I will not be able to try for a while as main PC power supply went supernova this AM, burned all the wiring, fried 3 HDD's and the motherboard. Thankfully I was in the room at the time and stopped it before it did any more damage.

THC-1138 meets TK-420Yikes, glad it didn't start a room fire.
I have a bad habit leaving mine on when I'm out.
Sound like a major setback-- I has a sad to hear it.
Maybe one or more drives will work again in another chasis??? hope :)
Trying to think positive thoughts

Where am I????The positives are that I still have a house to put a new PC in!!!
I have lost a bit of stuff but most of what I want to keep is on a 2tb external drive that was not plugged in at the time.
Until I get sorted, can others feedback here how they get on with this new script. In my opinion, this Standard Play ANH is our only hope for a decent Fullscreen preservation. When I get back to normal, I will be adding all the varieties of GOUT synced audio mixes to my copy.....
EDIT - I tried the 3 HDD's as externals on my laptop and they will not even spin!! Now trying to get the laptop set up for trying out the Darth Mallwalker script

Where am I????I have tonight managed to rig up from a box of non burned out spare bits that I have begged, stolen and borrowed, something that resembles a working PC.
Is that nasty mark in the screenshot above unique to this version or is it a regular like the burn marks next to Threepio in the corridor earlier in the film??
I have a d2v file, the working avs file, all the vob files and numerous GOUT synced audio files sat on the HDD. Presuming that this "new" machine can cope, what exactly can be done next with this project?? Do you think the quality can be improved further??
Ideally I need everything in DVD format but other options might work for me too....

Where am I????
I have found a few more "quirks" with various videos in my PAL VHS collection. Here are the old and new ones along with a few screenshots to show what I have found.
1 Wrong audio
The 1987, 1988 and 1989 Fullscreen versions of ANH do not have the Threepio tractor beam line so therefore do not have the recognised 1985 Ben Burtt remix sound track.
2 No Fox Fanfare
This has been known for a while but the 1995 THX "Last time only" versions of ESB and ROTJ (both Full and Widescreen) do not have the Fox Fanfare.
They go from this...

to this...

to this...

missing out this on ESB...

and this on ROTJ.

However, I have just realised that the 1987 re-release of ANH does something similar.
It goes from this...

to this...

missing out this.

Finally
3 Interupted Fox fanfare
On the initial 1982 Fullscreen ANH, as the Fox Fanfare is playing, an announcer talks over the Fanfare as follows "20th Century Fox Video presents."
EDIT
4 Another odd thing I have found is that the 1995 ANH Fullscreen release Fox Logo has changed from the slanting 0 to the upright 0 like this...

The weird thing is that ALL the Widescreen PAL ANH releases also have the original slanting 0, even the 1995 THX Last time only and 1995 Executor box set. It just goes to show the inconsistency in the release of Star Wars films on video in the UK.

Son of the SunsIn my 1995 PAL set, IIRC, SW has the new 3D animated Fox fanfare (which starts from the top of the logo and circles around) which fades out to LFL logo. TESB and ROTJ are original.
And in the time of greatest despair, there shall come a savior, and he shall be known as the Son of the Suns.

This also happened in North America - IIRC, before 1995 the only fullscreen version to retain the original logo was the time-compressed LD/CED version. Strange that it was the *1995* UK release that replaced the logo - was this release THX or non-THX?

How can something be wrong audio if it is the 1977 strereo 35mm mix?
If anything its the 85 that is wrong audio.
Mallwalker ouch on that clearly laserrotted image of the standard play star wars.

This space for rentThat's not laser rot, it's something on the film. You can tell because it's horizontally stretched due to the anamorphic lens.
Looks like someone accidentally spilled India ink on it. :)

Good point!!!
I suppose the correct statement is that it is the incorrect audio for the release year of the VHS tape. For once, it looks like they did us a favour by extending the life of the 1977 mix.
The trouble is that after seeing Star Wars at the correct speed on numerous NTSC releases of all variants, ALL Star Wars in PAL sounds wrong as I really notice the 4% speed up!!!

Litter-Box EngineerI got rid of all my P&S vhs tapes ages ago (I never owned any P&S versions on LD or DVD).
I never cared for P&S, even when it was the only version available. I was always aware that something was missing, most notably when Luke tilts his head back after Leia kisses him in ESB, his head disappears off the screen, and we miss his self-satisfied smirk, and in the SW throne room, we got Luke and Leia OR Leia and Han OR Leia with half of Luke's face and half of Han's face.
The demise of P&S is no loss, imo.

I am ready for the trials! Before Japanese imports became available in the late 80's, letterboxed LD's were usually not a viewing option.
I don't miss it either, but it's a part of home video history.
Haven't some SE shots been undone using Pan and Scan sources?
