So forgive my technical ignorance, DrDre, but how exactly does this work? Do you have to manually attach a shot to a source frame? Or does it take the bulk of reference frames you have and build a universally applicable model to grade any shot with?
And how is the grading accomplished? Does it just take the color palette of your references and match the source to it as closely as possible?

A detailed explanation of what steps the software takes would go a long way for helping a non-technically minded person like myself to comprehend what’s going on here.

All evidence points to tatooine supposed to be very warm and yellow from the color grading but I would agree it looks better with a more natural grade.

I don’t know. I guess my problem with removing it is just that it’s a cool scene that’s usually just removed for the sake of trying to preserve the reveal that Vader is Anakin, rather than to actually make ROTS better on its own, but it never really works anyways, since Ben’s dialogue in ANH makes it painfully obvious.

I do see what you’re saying about the ambiguous endings though. It is pretty much the only episodic film that ends in a really obvious shoehorned set up for the next film. Maybe one could leave it so it seems as though Anakin dies, then later (after the twins are born or something) cut back to the Emperor’s ship landing on Mustafar and that close up shot of his robotic hand crawling out of the lava. I think that could be a cool way of alluding to the future without being so ham-fisted with the “birth of vader”.

That sounds pretty awesome. I’m really not a fan of edits that remove Darth Vader’s “construction”, as I’ve never seen one that does it in a way where it isn’t still painfully obvious it’s Anakin in the OT, so I’d personally keep that in, but I’d still like to see somebody resurrect that edit idea.

Porkins gives a fine performance. The only thing that makes him “funny” is his weight. Which, I mean, who cares? It’d be cool to add some female pilots but I don’t see why you’d need to get rid of Porkins. Sure, he’s the only pilot without a chin strap. Sure he can barely fit in the cockpit. But whatever. The rebellion will take whoever they can get.

Well I mean there is a pretty good upscale of ANH-R on the 'spleen. But your bluray player or HDTV probably does a better job upscaling it anyways, so it’s really only useful for those watching from their computers.

You know there’s more to it than just resolution, right? The increased dynamic range is enough of a selling point for me. And those who care are going to definitely make sure the viewing conditions are ideal for the 4k format.
