Star Wars Custom Blu Ray Saga Set (a WIP)
Time

ORIGINAL FIRST POST:

"Hello all!

I’ve been planning on authoring a custom blu ray set for star wars which I will begin as soon as I get my hard drive fixed.  The plan is to include every version of the films (minus 2011 for the original trilogy), as well as the best bonus material I can get my hands on.  Each film (apart from maybe AOTC and ROTS) will have three discs: Theatrical version, special edition, and bonus material.  I just personally prefer each film to have its own bonus material disc than have a separate box for bonus material from all the films.  I’ve only really started getting a list of bonus material done for ANH, but will move on to the others soon.  I  would appreciate any help suggesting and finding bonus material, so please let me know if there is something you think just has to be on the special features disc of any particular movie.  At a certain point I will design blu ray box art for each film.  The idea is to create a kind of “ultimate edition” set of these movies."

The Star Wars Mono-logy (a 3-in-1 OT Edit: hard drive failure ended the project)
Time

I was recently asked about how this was coming along and realized I never did update you all on what went down.  I actually finished this edit after a ton of work.  Unfortunately, due to complications, my harddrive was damaged and all the files wiped before I got a chance to upload it to the spleen.  This involved me losing this project as well as several other works in progress.  I apologize that you all will not be able to see it, as that would require me starting completely from scratch, which given the side-project that this was, is just not worth it for me.  If you would like to know anything about what was done and how, please feel free to ask here and I will explain in as much detail as I can the final product and how I accomplished it.  Another apology, but please keep on the lookout for the bigger and better projects I have planned for the future.

If nothing else, this truly taught me the value of backing up my files.

Which type of hard drives failed, so we can avoid them.

Team Negative1

Seagate and WD Red 5TB. Samsung have also failed. One HGST drive doesn't sound right, but all other HGST drives have been fine so far.

I've had huge problems with seagate drives over the years.  Would not recommend them to anyone for even the simplest uses.

Jewel Case Covers
Time

Does anybody keep their DVDs/Blu-Rays in CD jewel cases?  I've been thinking of doing this since I like the look of them so much better than DVD and Blu Ray cases, which look kind of cheap to me with their flimsy plastic and all.  But as I was thinking about this I was wondering if anybody else does and, if so, has anybody designed any cool jewel case sized covers for their movies?

There is a bunch of stuff that looks a little weird, and I don't think it is a compression artefact.

Mostly in high contrast areas, like R2 here against the background, it is like he has after-images to the left and right of him. Any idea what this is?

It looks almost like poorly-aligned stacked sources, although I'm pretty sure TN1 isn't using a source-stacking method for their restoration, so I really can't tell quite what it is.  It's like ghosting or something.

Info Wanted: 'LOTR - FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING': Green tint removed?
Time

The prints have a yellow-green tint, while the bd has a blue-green tint. It's obvious by looking at the "fellowship of the ring" title that's fades in at the beginning, which is supposed to be nearly white, but instead appears teal.  The DVD is not entirely accurate to a print, but it is easier to watch and feels more natural than the blu Ray. To me, it's never been quite so much about whether it is perfectly accurate, rather that it just looks and feels right.

Then I suppose you could do a color correction on the bd to more closely resemble the dvd so that the edges aren't as noticeable. I just feel that if the EE DVD color is what we're shooting for, this would probably be the best and most accurate way to accomplish this.  Even slightly cropping the BD, while not ideal, would still be better than crappy colors.

I hate to revive a long dead thread, but after a quick readthrough, it doesn't appear that anybody considered overlaying the EE DVD on top of the EE BD and setting the blending mode to "color" in a program like After Effects, thus applying the DVD's color to the luminance of the BD.

The technique is used here at around 1:20 : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agMUHc2ODqI

Did anybody attempt this?  Did I miss something re-reading this thread?

We lost Count Dooku
Time

He was truly one of the greats.  Regardless of our views on AOTC and ROTS, we all must admit the man made some pretty terrible dialogue bearable and even good in some cases.  The astounding vibrato in his voice commanded respect and yet could also deliver the most soft spoken of lines with utter believability and brilliance.  It's rare that an actor can be recognized by any generation they are put in front of and Sir Christopher Lee did.  The older generation knew him from Hammer's horror films and James Bond, the younger generation knew him from Star Wars and Lord of the Rings.   RIP Sir Christopher Lee.

It means that Fox owns the distribution rights for Star Wars forever, if they don't make a new deal. In contrast to the rights for Empire and Jedi, which will (or already did?) return to Lucasfilm.

I believe the rights to empire and jedi already did, since the digital releases have taken the fox logo out of all films aside from SW.

they already have a 4K version

 Um, what?

The ones they recently screened, I guess. But, as savestarwars.com said (http://savestarwars.com/specialeditionfail.html" target="_blank" title="web.archive.org/web/20140312150335/http://savestarwars.com/specialeditionfail.html">http://web.archive.org/web/20140312150335/http://savestarwars.com/specialeditionfail.html )

What is more, the Special Edition version here was only scanned from the film negatives at 1080p. This is to be the new digitial master for the films, and all of the new ILM work was done from this scan. So, if you ever see the films in theatres again, it will be from 1080 lines of resolution, never mind a 2K scan (I guess an 8K scan is just crazy talk at this point).

So, if true, they're just sh***y 2004's upscales, right? Is it good enough for them?

Is it good enough for them?  You're talking about the same company that thought the GOUT was "good enough".

4K restoration on Star Wars
Time

So, I can't necessarily state my sources other than saying that it is from a reputable source within disney. But, I happen to know the attitude at disney towards all things prequel and special edition is very negative and have heard that restoring the original, unaltered trilogy is a priority on the Star Wars front, though their focus is mainly on TFA, the spinoff films, and rebels at the moment and it is unclear when we will see a release, but that it is going to happen within the next couple of years.

I have another small question that I don't know if you've answered before. Do you intend on keeping things like the orange streaks that appear throughout the Tantive IV scene, as well as the cue marks on each reel?

I believe he said he's gonna take those out as the orange streaks are unique to the technicolor prints.

If you're referring to the "tantive orange errors", then this statement isn't true. See: http://fd.noneinc.com/Glitch/starwars-tantiveorangeerrors/starwars-tantiveorangeerrors.html

They're on all Eastman Kodak and IB Technicolor 35mm release prints.

FWIW, many home video releases were made using interpositive prints, so they don't necessarily show up on those.

Ah, you're right.  Let me then amend my previous statement to say: "he's taking those out because they aren't on the negative."

I wanted to download these movies and I am completely tech-illiterate.

When I download them from public torrent sites, can I just do it without any protection or IP masking? I own the 2004 dvd box set but I really doubt Disney cares about any of that and will want to pull people into court anyway.

It's not really so much about that and just more about standard morality.  You really should own either the blu ray or digital versions of the film.

Star Wars 97SE in HD using super resolution & more
Time

I mentioned this over on the gout superresolution thread, but I think taking the general concept of this and using aligned multiple sources as opposed to subsequent frames to recruit the detail from, you could probably get a far superior result to anything we've ever seen before.  Better detail, and (i could be completely wrong here) I think it could possible reduce the aliasing significantly, assuming the aliasing on each source is different.
