Episode VII: The Force Awakens - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *
Time

Sometimes the truth hurts.

I think you guys are all on a lark of speculation right now about her being in the costume, but I really do half expect some EU "explanation" for her facial deformities--like Luke's in-Universe face-change explanation in ESB.

Maybe they'll say the one-armed Wampa, seeking revenge, sniffed out Leia's "Force" which bears a sibling's resemblance to Luke's, and then swiped off her kisser, leading to semi-successful reconstruction by a rookie surgeon-droid in a hilarious darkly comic episode.

Ikey

Ikey Owens, keyboard maestro for Pocket Lent, Free Moral Agents, Long Beach Dub All-Stars, Slightly Stoopid, the Mars Volta & (most recently) Jack White.

I was lucky enough to see him perform with Pocket Lent in '97 as well as with Slightly Stoopid during his one tour with them (as one of maybe 15 people in the audience), and then in the aughts saw him a few times with the Mars Volta and his own band Free Moral Agents. He was an essential element of the California music scene since Pocket Lent's astonishing Verve showed the punkers what music is supposed to sound like.

Huge display at the bookstore. The OT wins in the long run. Cream rises to the top.

In a very similar vein, this weekend at the Vans store there was a huge display showing Vader/Death Star/Poster Luke-with-Blaster and a legend that read:

Explore the dark side of the Force. Our brand new Vans x Star Wars collection with new designs inspired by villains from the original trilogy is here for Holiday 2014.

It's like Lucasfilm's Ministry of Truth is feverishly scrubbing the failed narrative "The Original Trilogy Has Always Been Based On The Saga of Darth Vader as Depicted in the Prequels" and replacing it with "Prequels? Never heard of 'em. Hayden who? What the fuck is a Quiggly John?"

"it is doubtful that all the annotations should be considered canonically-recorded."

Oh, come on! I have no doubt that you should so consider them, with only minimal epicyclical rationalizations! I have faith in you. Just remember your mantra:

The Canon is Complete

There Is Only the Canon

The Canon is Perfect

The Republic Has Always Been at War with the Trade Federation Separatists

Freedom Is Slavery (from a Certain Point of View)

Gary Kurtz Blasts 'Star Wars' Myths
Time

Kurtz once said that Palpatine wasn't supposed to appear until IX, but then GL condensed V-IX into V-VI. I would have loved a longer arc from ANH to Palpatine's death.

Unfortunately, Lucas had nowhere enough imagination to generate interesting new adventures over any extended period, so he just wrapped and twisted the limited set of ideas from the project's inception into itself.

He was furthermore too controlling to open up to new writers and other talent, so he had no choice but to just end it.

To sustain six movies of consistently fresh plot would have required a steady flow of imaginative infusion. It proved impossible.

"Whatever plan you come up with (presumably better than the nonsense in the final film) would be unraveled by killing him later in the same film."

That's exactly what would make it unexpected, harrowing, exciting and poignant. That's what sets great storytelling apart from ordinary movies. As Nabokov famously made one of his great themes in criticism as well as composition, no artist should allow himself to get invested in and protective of his own characters. Once that happens, the story is being sacrificed for the characters, which upends the basic priorities of storytelling.

It featured riots, fireworks, flybys, stormtroopers being attacked, giant statues being toppled and "Wesa free!". There is a heavy implication that the Empire has fallen in the "official" cuts that most people are now sadly familiar with, there is no such suggestion of that in the OUT. Plus as I said all the old EU stuff about the fall of the Empire backed up the Lucas approved line that that was what you saw at the end of ROTJ SE.

Are you fucking serious?!? Statues of what? And he stuck JarJar in there? And nobody stopped him? What an absolute tragedy.

Thank the Maker I never had the stomach for ROTJ-SE after seeing SW97 & ESB97.

EDIT: BTW, robed chrometrooper looks dope, admittedly.

What did Ghost Obi Wan mean?

Puggo - Jar Jar's Yoda said:

When ESB was produced in 1980, Obi-Wan didn't even know Leia was Luke's sister. I don't even think George knew that.

There was nothing to "know". It's one of the sloppiest, half-baked, last-minute, tacked-on, loose-end burning retcons in genre history.

When they had Obi-Wan deliver the twins to Ben's farm in ROTS, nobody at Lucasfilm stopped and said: "oops, loss of continuity, we can't do it that way".

They may have said that to themselves, but being the good Yes-Men they are, they kept their mouths shut.
