Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)
Time

Back in the very early days of prequel hype, I subscribed to the Homing Beacon that was/is sent out by the official site: starwars.com

Subscribing to the Homing Beacon seemed to always get one e-mail updates to all things Star Wars. I didn't have a Homing Beacon in my inbox today, but I did have this...

What do you LIKE about the EU?
Time

I’m a huge Anakin/Vader fan and I don’t tend to like things pre-Anakin’s life or post-Anakin’s death.

The Thrawn trilogy is one of the few post-Anakin’s death series that I have read. It was pretty good.

I’ve enjoyed some of the Fett stories, books and comics – both Boba and Jango. Jango was one of the few things/characters I enjoyed from the PT.

I’ve also read some of the Clone War stuff.

One book I enjoyed was a novel that takes place after Episode I called Rogue Planet. I think Greg Bear is one of the best Sci-Fi writers out there and I really enjoyed his book. One of the reasons is that it has a lot of Tarkin in it. Also, there was a big role for a character that I really enjoyed – Raith Sienar.

Personally, I’ve always felt that Tarkin should have had a much more prominent role in the PT. I had the idea that Tarkin could have been used as the duplicitous character while making Palpatine seem like an innocent dupe. Star Wars fans would’ve already known the truth, but I think it would’ve made for more complexity, more suspense, and more drama if the average audience member was led to believe that Tarkin was the real bad guy in all of this.

I had the idea (back when I was thinking about rewriting the prequels) that Tarkin would’ve been vice-chancellor under Palpatine rather than that silly Mas Amedda.

As for Sienar, we know that he constructed Maul’s Sith Infiltrator. In the novel Rogue Planet, he is the one who comes up with the idea for the Death Star. Tarkin shows an interest. It is very well done.

So I think I would’ve used Sienar in some capacity in the PT. One possibility is having him construct the ships used by the clones in Episode II. Have it be some secret contract given to him by Tarkin. This would show that Tarkin knew about the clones, knew a war with the Separatists was coming, etc. It could've all come to a head.

Lastly, I liked Shadows of the Empire. Sure, I know it has some problems but maybe I just like the idea of having another pseudo-OT film. I’ve always thought Lucas could’ve made good money back then (and maybe today) if he did one of those direct-to-DVD cartoon movies of Shadows of the Empire like we've seen with all these superhero cartoon films the past few years.

The Big ESB Reveal
Time

I've never understood the need to preserve the Anakin/Vader reveal in the PT.

Anyone new to Star Wars should watch them in the same order we did.

You go 4, 5, 6, 1, 2, 3.

That's it. Very simple.

They're not special. Why should anyone new to the films get to view them in some special way that none of us got to do?

Countdown to Blu-ray

The new Star Wars Insider #126 is slated to come out on May 25th.

It looks like this is the issue where we're going to get the Blu-ray details.

EDIT: LOL. Look at that picture. Love those baggy pants. Who do they have dressed up in that suit, a twelve-year old?

My pants are falling down!

 Jeez!

I once thought it was as simple as "you gotta' believe".  Believe in the Force and in yourself. Han is too cynical to buy into a bunch of "simple tricks and nonsense".

I can say that I once thought this as well. However, I found myself at a loss when Leia heard Luke call to her in ESB.

She wasn't trying to hear Luke. After all, she didn't know he would call to her. So there's no "you gotta believe for it to work" moment there and yet she still hears him.

This was cemented in ROTJ when Leia said the following:

"Luke, you have a power I don't understand and could never have."

That doesn't sound like a believer.

Trust me, I'm not midichlorian apologist. I've just found myself wonering over the years since TPM if there may be some happy medium between the mystery and the science.

Maybe it was the terrible way it was explained, the obvious forced exposition. But I can honestly say that when Qui-Gon took a sample of Anakin's blood for Obi-Wan to test his "midichlorian count", I didn't find myself saying whaaaaat?

That didn't come until the Jedi Temple and landing platform scenes.

I hope that Frank Oz has recorded new dialogue for this set.  Because I desperately want to hear Midi-chlorians coming out of Yoda's mouth in TESB.

Yoda: Size matters not. Look at me. Judge me by my size, do you? Hmm? Hmm. And well you should not. For my ally is the Force, and a powerful ally it is. Midi-chlorians create it, makes it grow. Its energy is inside of us at the microscopic level and that in turn binds us. Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter. You must feel the Force inside of you; here, between you, me, and that's it because only a select few have it.  We are the Chosen People, Luke.

Ahhhh.  So much better.

While I’m no fan of midichlorians, I will say that the thing I got asked the most about as a kid when it came to Star Wars was why Luke could become a Jedi and Han could not?

I think Lucas may have been asked this question more than we realize and decided to come up with an explanation.

remember X-boards and Aldera.net. geez it's been awhile. Was PrequelSpoilers the one who got the AotC Mace-Jango showdown boards from the Grandpa who found them in the trash can?  good times.

I think so. Those got passed around quite a bit. I remember that it looked like a much longer, more extensive fight than what we ended up getting.

Darth Psychotic gave a lot of stuff to the X-Boards from the run up to Episode II before he started up millenniumfalcon.com for the run up to Episode III.

SI used to hang at TFN Boards quite a bit for some reason.?

Taylor had his updates at Aldera with what was basically a scene-by-scene text breakdown of Episode II with commentary. I think text in green was what we already knew. Pinkish red was new stuff or theory. I remember that I used to print them out. LOL.

Crazy days.

I had to deal with all their type of crap when i did ANH:R. Death threats and threats of violence because i dared to "change Lucas' vision". I just can't believe how many buy into all this crap.  They refuse to believe that vader being Lukes dad, leia being the sister etc was not his original intentions, even though there is video evidence of Lucas stating this was not the case from the 70's & 80's. I find it really strange just how blinkered some people can be.

You got to link to some of those threads. I got to read those.

That place really became nutty during the lead up to Episode II. Everyone and everything had become hypersensitive because of Episode I.

People took up sides. The fanbase became polorized.

There were places to vent about Episode I, but the TFN forums and the forum over at the official site were not among them.

LOL. I got banned there like three times in less than two years under three different usernames starting in 1999.

but although been there longer then 005, my post count is no where near as high, but i've also posted recently.

So what other SW forums have people migrated here from?

Which ones are gone?

Aldera.net  (This was Chuckie Taylor's site)

The X-Boards (Tai-Zec and the gang)

PrequelSpoilers.com (D had the Episode II script. Well, it was Sith Infiltrator who had it)

Hmm... based on the preceding comments, it would seem Ady's decision not to solicit any other suggestions was a smart move after all :)  I guess, at the end of the day, ANH:R will satisfy 99% of everyone's expectations, with only a minor thing here or there each individual wishes were different.  I'd say that's a pretty amazing achievement.

Agree 100%.

Perfectly stated.

Those proposed changes were among my few nit-picks with the original release as well, so I'm happy to hear that they may be getting addressed. My only other suggestion would be to restore Obi-Wan's and Vader's confrontation aboard the Death Star, such that Vader's sabre is already lit when Obi-Wan meets him. In Revisited, Obi-Wan is the first to ignite his sabre, and I always thought that that had a significant (and unwelcome) narrative effect; it appears that Obi-Wan is not acting defensively, but rather offensively, which seems to go against both his and, later in Empire, Yoda's instructions about using the Force for knowledge and defence, never for attack. And likewise, by being aggressive and very much on the hunt for Obi-Wan here, it seems more in keeping with Vader's character and motivation to have him make the first move, as it were.

Hmmm...I never thought about that.

But my fifth and final nitpick did have to do with the duel.

I was surprised when Ady reversed Vader's last two lines. I always liked "You should not have come back" being the last thing Vader ever says to Obi-Wan. It is cooler, more sinister.

Ady reversed this with the line,"Your powers are weak, old man."

I have to say that I liked it the way it was originally.

It is so obvious that they weren't built for that terrain

What makes you say that?  I thought given the denseness of the forest that they were a logical alternative to something as big as the walkers.

They just seem like they would have trouble getting through a dense forest.

They seem more like they were made for snow or sand. Flat and somewhat more stable surfaces.

Adywan reveals his list of possible further changes to ANHR!

Sounds great.

Three (possibly four) of my five overall nitpicks may be changed.

The controversial electric torture droid needle will be changed

I never had a problem with electrifying the torture needle. I just felt it would look better if it were just the white core. Removing the surrounding blue hue will keep people from calling it a mini-lightsaber.

Going to try to reorganize shots so Threepio’s original reaction to Artoo being hit during Luke’s trench run will be restored

Excellent. Was surprised to see it gone during initial viewing.

Going to try to restore final shot of Tarkin before the Death Star blows up

Truly great. It was the biggest nitpick for me.

A different Death Star reveal not using reused footage from ESB

I know Ady is talking about the Star Destroyers here, but it allows us to revisit (pun intended) the thought that a member had. I wish I could remember who it was so that I could give them credit. It was the idea to have the Death Star orbiting the Endor moon during its initial reveal. I thought that sounded pretty cool.
