and apparently there is a way to do it if the sound card can record in "bit accurate mode" (according to this thread):
I've used a USB/SPDIF box to do this. It had only SPDIF in and out, and nothing else - boxes with more inputs may or may not be "bit accurate" (the box suffered from occassional jumps, failing to record for a fraction of a second, but it only took two or three goes to record an entire side accurately).

Going nowhere right now - I'm still packing to move house on Saturday. I've also been busy with a couple of other projects - a conversion of the SACD of Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds to DTS CD (for the reason that my amp won't allow graphic equalisation of an SACD), and a conversion to PAL of the hilariously appalling Pendragon Pictures version of War of the Worlds.
And, when it comes out on DVD, I'll be making my own edit of Spielberg's War of the Worlds too!
Sorry Boomstick - my PMs are forever overflowing so I can't send any more until I get around to cleaning them out.
I'm not going to be sending any more DVDs out for a while, but I hope someone can get a copy to you - there are a few PAL copies out there now. And one of these days I'm going to get around to making a torrent...
I remember thinking it needed re-editing (for my own tastes) when I first saw it. I thought the scene where he throws out one of his power supplies and it explodes in a pseudo-nuclear fireball was telegraphing the ending from miles away, although removing it might make the ending a bit cryptic.
I would remove any references to "delaying" Judgement Day - I'd rather pretend there was no discrepancy with dates, and that history was set - the events of T1-3 simply being to lead up to what's already happened (and we're told the humans have just about beaten the machines in T1, the time travel being a last ploy by Skynet to change history). For this reason I would also have to remove the killing of John's "lieutenants" (the kids at the party) since that's changing history.
I don't know how you'd work around it, but in an ideal world I'd like to remove any mention of Sarah's death, as it smacked way too much of "the actress didn't want to come back".
Smartripper and DVD Decryptor will also let you run individual titles or chapters from a disc.
Wasn't the shot you guys talking about in ROTJ aboard the rebel cruiser as Han and Lando were saying their goodbyes before the rebel strike? That shot has terrible matte work.
That one is blue screen. Probably not much that can be done about that one.
The shot I think you're referring to was a matte painting, not a blue screen shot, but you might have a point. A bit of shading could be applied that might give it more depth.
No, I was using an MJPEG AVI as my source, though I think it happens on all AVIs. I've found one or two references to it in forums, but very little interest in finding out what's going on. It could be down to some YUV/RGB thing. Anyway I soon dropped the idea of using AVISynth at all, so I just ask every now and again out of curiousity
Is it supposed to have fallen just as Luke walked in front of it?
Yup, that's what's meant to happen, although hopefully people won't come to the conclusion that it just fell off, because with any luck they won't notice it at all.
It was another example of minimal fix. I could have removed it from the first half of the shot, but this would have introduced a (lesser) continuity problem because it was visible a shot or two before.
This is because the PAL VHS audio source used for his release has been sped up from the original 24fps film but they (the VHS producers) didn't just resample it they also preserved the audio pitch
Really? I've never seen (heard) a PAL release with preserved pitch. I've only recently seen it used on UK broadcasts of Stargate, and you can tell it's had something done to it because the sound warbles and clicks.
Have you tried to align the audio track to the video yet? Because I'd imagine you'd be unlikely to get a perfect 25fps from your VHS player. I remember, for some reason, my friend and I pressing play at the same time on our VHS copies of Star Wars and after only a few minutes they were a few seconds out of sync.
I don't think you can ever time stretch/compress perfectly - if the tools you've tried haven't worked, have you considered that a combination of tape stretch and your player's mechanics could have conspired to lower the pitch to something similar to the true soundtrack?
I was going to make a CD-sized Divx out of it. I'll put it on the to-do list Anyone else is welcome to upload an image of the DVD to wherever they'd like, but I'd rather make the Divx (or maybe Xvid if I can get the hang of it) version myself.
A possible PAL transfer has been mentioned here though and depended on a PAL player being modified.
Modified how? To play an NTSC disc as PAL? Because I can't imagine how you'd do that. But it is theoretically possible (albeit very difficult) to take the X0 transfer and reconstruct it as PAL.
Is the source for X0 anamorphic, and if not, will it be interpolated up to anamorphic resolution?
If you mean progress, I've done very little so far. Got to move house soon, and other stuff, so it's pretty much on hold.
So far I have a list of about 80 things, though this will fluctuate if I find more, or decide to ignore some of them.
Here's a selection of things I might change:
1. Replace "led by Luke Skywalker" in the opening crawl, because he's not really leading, is he? 2. There's a strangely linear feature in the atmosphere as Luke flies away from Hoth. 3. Align R2's text in the X-Wing cockpit so it doesn't look badly superimposed. 4. R2 looks TOO blue in some shots in space (as opposed to not looking blue at all in ANH). 5. Replace "You were lucky to get out of there" with "You're lucky you don't taste too good." 6. Make the Emperor scene closer to the OT/SE, and hide more of Palpatine's face. 7. Replace Boba Fett's voice. I wouldn't mind so much if the lines were actually delivered well, but they're not. 8. R2 uses the wrong tool to "access" the power outlet. 9. Something to liven up the painting of the "weather vane" inside Cloud City. 10. Extend the flashes from the lightsabres to illuminate the matte painting as well. 11. Replace Vader's "Inform my Star Destroyer..." with "Bring my shuttle." 12. There are two shots of Captain Needa saying "Yes M'Lord", one of which appears to have been shot on the wrong part of the set. The only fix I can think of is to duplicate the shot, which might make things worse. 13. The cables in Luke's artifical hand don't move in sync with his fingers. 14. Remove Clive Revill from the credits and add Ian McDiarmid. 15. Spell Denis Lawson correctly, again!
That's pretty much it for me too - there are no "official" colours as far as I know, although the VHS boxset went blue-red-green instead of red-blue-green.
Erik, email me at dartheditous @ hotmail.co.uk and I'll send you the retouched image, and also some better captures of those screenshots on the back if you need them.
Dark_Jedi, I designed my covers to work with the disc labels that Darth Editous already made. If you look closely at the back of the cover, behind the text and screenshots, you'll see the same image.
Actually, it's not quite the same... if you look at the image on the disc, you'll see that I straightened Luke's legs so he doesn't look like he's auditioning for the ballet I think I also moved the Death Star a bit so it was centred with Luke's lightsabre.
I hope you stick with the ANH red, ESB blue, ROTJ green motif, as I've always felt that the movies were those colours.
Nope. Once you strip off the extras and other languages and angles, what you're left with almost fits on a single layer anyway, so there's not much loss of quality. I think the bitrate I used was around 4750kbps. ESB is bigger/longer than ANH - I might experiment with different bitrates but I'll probably stick with single layer. I still get a slight layer pause with my new player, which I'd rather go without.
If you're proposing to upload the new AC3 file to let users rebuild their own discs, you could just send out the corrected section along with instructions, or a C program to patch the ripped AC3 file.
There was a shot where two Y-Wings disappear for a frame or two. I can't remember exactly where it was but I think it was a cockpit shot of Gold Leader.
On the last shot of the TIEs in the trench, the left hand TIE was missing in the first couple of frames.
I say was because both of those were fixed on the DVD, and that was my source.
