Star Wars In 3D
Time
If anyone knows anything more about the technical details behind this, I'd love to hear them. I've seen a few IMAX films and it always annoyed me that, as well as making it 3D, they brought the whole picture forward until it seems to be just a few feet in front of you - it somewhat takes away the impact of the massive screen.

So is this now a much more subtle effect? Some of you say it's much more realistic, then some say it's more like layered animation. Are the glasses polarised?

Nah, it shouldn't be a PM cos mine are full so I can't reply... I defined my points manually, then had the computer extrapolate them to 3d after giving it a bit more information, like "all these points lie on a plane" or "this point has the same depth as this point".

I gave colour matching a quick go last night but it didn't work (the image came out too green or too purple), and right now I'm not sure what I've done wrong.

DE are you just messing around with this just for the heck of it or are you trying to figure out a good way to use it for your release?

Both Now I've finally completed my 2d->3d move project (inspired by http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~dhoiem/projects/popup/) I'll make a start on this one today and post some results later.

What I'd really like to do is write a complete AviSynth plugin - does anyone know how? Or how to read an AviSynth file's output from C?

What I really meant was automating the adjustment of the histograms to match the GOUT image. I can probably write a program to do it on a pair of frames, then those results could be put into an AviSynth script to correct the colours for that scene.

Not that I want to be an apologist, but for that particular shot/scene, I think somewhere between the two would be a good compromise - the blue one is too blue, but the GOUT colours look a little too studio-like to me.

I believe Photoshop CS has a colour matching tool - has anyone tried it on something like this?

PS:

Some pretty bad burn marks visible on those frames...

The trick is to do multiple morphs - one for an arm, one for a head, one for a leg, etc, then blend them together later. That way you avoid the "tearing" that occurs when you have shapes too close to each other.

Fixed flip shot of 3PO as he sees the Sandcrawler:Now the oil stain is on the correct side.

Ah, now here I have to call shenanigans Flopped shots are a good thing. In this case it maintains continuity of direction, which I think is more important that continuity of oil stain. The first shows 3PO looking the left, and so does the second. If you switch them around, it'll create a discontinuity - perhaps not something everyone will notice, but that's why the shot of 3PO was flopped all those years ago.

Soften the focus a little as you move deeper into the BG on that footage, and I think you might improve it.

I'd disagree - wouldn't less depth of field make it look more like a model? I can't find a link, but there's this guy who takes photos of cities with a tilt-and-shift lens that dramatically lessens the depth of field, and if you don't know, you'd swear they were fantastically detailed but very small miniatures.

OUT: PAL or NTSC?
Time
Moth3r:
I don't know for sure, but I suspect that CRT TVs sold in PAL countries have shadow masks/phosphors optimized for ~576 scanlines.

I have to say I doubt this. I don't think a CRT could ever be "calibrated" in that way since the tube is affected by the Earth's magnetic field. If it was in any way "optimized" everyone would get a sub-optimal picture when they got the set home (especially me - my room is near a small electricty substation and my picture is sheared by a few degrees).

I've quite often seen complaints levelled at NTSC - from PAL owners - about scanlines appearing too widely spaced. But I'm prepared to be proven wrong on this one.

That's just because there are less lines of electrons being fired, not because PAL TVs have too many lines of phosphor dots.

and it's perfectly acceptable to use [apostrophes] when making plural abbreviations

I was thinking more of:

Both DVD's contain the same detail

American's hate PAL.

American's and other NTSC-people, but mostly American's still think their system is better.

Half the DVD's I own are NTSC, and a few DVD's that are officially released

I presume that recent DVDs use soft-telecined 2:2:2:2:2:2:2:2:2:2:2:3 pulldown?

Does anyone know of any DVDs that are use this method? I was going to give it a go for a "tru-speed" version of my ANH edit. ETA: just realised one thing though - it might not look good on a computer, since the software will believe the whole movie is interlaced and will deinterlace it accordingly.

The last UK terrestrial broadcasts of Stargate were pitch corrected, and you could tell. 4% speed up would have been preferable, but I'm used to it.

And boris, about apostrophes - if in doubt, leave 'em out!

MPEG2 only stores colour information once every 2 pixels, since the human eye is more sensitive to differences in luminance (brightness). Deep reds have low luminance as well, which makes them look worse. Having said that, the blockiness I've seen on some R1 discs (The Abyss, for example) looks far worse than can be accounted for by the chroma subsampling (the every-2-pixels thing I was talking about). My R2 Abyss doesn't show these artefacts.

3D ?!

For Bugs Life, they created a full frame version by rendering the top and bottom that didn't exist in the theatrical version.

I didn't know that, but I did read that they also re-created some scenes completely to take better advantage of the full frame.

Back to the topic - I have a real love/hate relationship with 3D. The trouble is, it's not 3D. It's pseudo-3D as long as you keep your head perfectly still, and as long as you can stand the headaches, which for me is about 5 minutes.

Also, I am curious whether you are painting out tow cables that the crew pulled the droids with through the sand. The one that passes infront of Luke and 3PO during the night scene is really obvious.

Please post screenshots - everyone says it's really obvious but I've never been able to find it.

I'm still toying with one or two bits from ANH, and I haven't done much to ESB lately. The thing with me is, I stick with a project for so long, then my attention... sorry, what was I saying? Oh yes - my attention wanders. To be honest I'm amazed I got ANH out. It's not like I'm not going to get ESB, I will... I just don't know how long it'll take.
