***The "Darth Editous" Episode IV DVD Info and Feedback Thread*** - a partially "de-specialed" DVD
Time
Hal, I will get around to making those clips available - I'm just still not sure what the best way to go about it is, or when I'll get around to it

Sorry once again for the delays - I know you're all looking forward to it, and I really really hope to have it out there next weekend.

Hows it coming along?

I've encoded the Xvid video, but I found some more info on DVD specs that tells me I should re-encode the PAL MPEG video I did last night. I've been a bit busy lately after being roped in to create a TV ad for work.

Unrelated question, What are your computer specs? (If you dont mind)

At work (which does all the encoding), 3.0GHz and 1Gb of RAM. At home, 1.0GHz and 1Gb of RAM (I like my ultraportable and there's nothing I want to upgrade to right now). All my Star Wars work is stored along with other stuff on a 300Gb external hard drive (with no backup! ).

Sorry guys, no wolfman in this edit...

DE, are you going to compile a list of extra fixes made in the V2 and V3 versions somewhere? Maybe add them below the list in your original post? That would be great!

I'll try, but I'm not sure I've kept a very accurate list. I can always compare it to insert files, although that wouldn't help for audio edits.

The second pass of the Xvid encode is at 90% as I type

Good luck with the Xvid encode! Any word on the DVD releases?

They take a little longer - overnight encodes, like Xvid, but then there's chapters to mark and stuff. And I've just been pressed into producing another TV ad for work which I'll need to spend some time on. Xvid should definitely be done next weekend if not before, DVDs perhaps the one after that.

Hmm... on the one hand the original DVD is way too dark, but on the other hand, adjusting the levels is going to bring up noise, cause posterisation, etc, so there's a good case to be made for leaving it as is and leaving it to people to adjust their sets. I suspect keeping the original levels will make encoding more efficient, too...

Edit: never mind, I figured out what was wrong with my levels boosting - it looks a lot nicer now so I'm going ahead with it. Spotted something else to correct though...

Is this version still going to be ready to download by the weekend?

I expect to have the Xvid version available, at least. Right now I'm just umming and ahhing about applying a global gamma correction of 1.5 to bring it all up to a decent brightness (it really helps bring the stars out too).

DE: you didn't by any chance use the '97 sound mix for this version, did you?

Nope, sorry. It has its problems but I prefer the new mix. I haven't corrected the swapped music, because I can't tell the difference, but I have put back in the fanfare as the X-Wings dive on the Death Star, re-equalised lots of dialogue and other stuff. I have kept the new Krait Dragon call - the original sounds more like a Dewback and less like the kind of noise a human could make.

Cutting those six frames may speed it up just enough, however, I don't know if it would affect the sound mix (skip or jump).

I think that would make the shot too short.

Right, more changes:

• The subtitles have been moved higher into the picture, so they now lie on the 10% "text safe" line (within the frame of the movie - there isn't room underneath, and this way the DVD and Xvid editions can be made from the same source).
• Graphic equalization of Tarkin and Leia's dialogue before the destruction of Alderaan. I attempted this originally, but for some reason I couldn't make it work - I don't know why, it was easy (are you listening, George...?)
• I just couldn't resist this one - Greedo now frowns on his last line, as inspired by Adywan, but implemented by me. There are no other changes, as I feel anything else would just be eye candy, but this one change makes Greedo so more menacing, and is actually a very effective compromise to those who may feel Han is still a bit too cold-blooded - Greedo actually becomes a threat.
• Han only fires off one shot (it matches the audio and firing two looks a little lame).

These are in addition to the "manoeuvres" shot and the drifting stars before going into hyperspace, as mentioned earlier, and whatever else I've done but can't remember.

Sorry that this means another delay, but all 3 publicly available additions should be completed by next weekend. I'll be able to seed them at up to 2mbit, but only between about midnight and 8am GMT.

STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 REVISITED ADYWAN *1080p HD VERSION NOW IN PRODUCTION
Time
Adywan, I hope you agree that plagiarism is the sincerest form of flattery because I think I'm going to have to do my own version of Greedo's final frown - it makes him so much more menacing! I'm not going as far as animating everyone else (it's all a bit too much for me!), but you've done an amazing job.

Can we (ie losers like me who have a slow @rse connection) expect an Xvid option for d/l DE?

Yup. It'll be non-anamorphic, to fit on a single CD with stereo sound, running at 23.976fps.

Arnie.d, I've been meaning to make snippets available for people who want to use them in their edits, but I've yet to set up a decent way of getting them out there. I've also lost the emails from the other person who wanted some of my patches - if you're reading this, whoever you are (I've got a bad memory) email me again.

I guess it is a tiny bit green, but I don't think it's any worse than any of the other shots in that scene, so I'm not going to do it.

The other is the scene of the twin suns setting. In the original, the scene was more bright and didn't seem to be too late in the afternoon/evening.

You have a point about this one - I'm going to adjust the levels, very slightly.

v3 is almost ready to render! Some of the new changes are:

- Many more lightsabres repainted and coloured, including (almost?) all the shots aboard the Falcon and a number from the duel.
- The Falcon now manoeuvres a bit after Han boasts about his manoeuvres - similar to Adywan's change, but only altering the existing scene.
- The stars continue to drift just before the Falcon goes into Hyperspace.
- A burn mark that appears before Vader strikes a wall is removed.

I'm starting to lose track of everything I've done, and when I did it, so there may be other stuff I've forgotten about. And of course this includes all the changes I made for v2, which was only released as an Xvid AVI.

So this is another unediting of the 2004 SE? Nice work! Would definitly seed this if there was a NTSC and a torrent aviliable!

There is a torrent, or at least there was. I can't remember if I put the PAL or NTSC version up though - probably PAL. There was also a 24fps XVID AVI floating around for a while too.

There will be PAL, NTSC and XVID versions of v3, and I will also create (but perhaps not distribute) a PAL "true speed" version. This will be interlaced, so it will only be suitable for watching on a CRT television.

Ep V has it's own thread somewhere, but it's way down the list so I'm not surprised if you didn't find it! I've done a little more work on it this weekend.

EP IV (v3) still has one more shot to polish off (the Falcon actually some manoeuvres - an enhancement of the original shot rather than a new composite like in Adywan's), but now I'm torn between doing some colour correction, which I know so many people would like to see, and leaving it be, because the colours have never been a problem for me (except the saturation on Tatooine).

So what are people's biggest problems with the colours in Ep IV? The Tantive IV, obviously, and the first shots of Tatooine, but any other shots that you'd like to see corrected?

ADM, you sent me a PM but I don't have your email address any more. I'll think about it in my downtime, but I don't think it's something I can pull off.
