Are The Star Wars Movies Your Favourite Movies?
Time

I consider the original Star Wars and the 6 part saga to be two separate movies.  Star Wars floats around my top 3 and the Saga is further down in my top 100.

In my Star Wars, Vader killed Luke's father, the Jedi aren't so dogmatic, Palpatine was just a politician, Tarkin was the master mind behind the Death Star, Han paid off Jabba right after the credits rolled, the senate was able to come back to power with Tarkin gone and the Empire's only bargaining chip, the Death Star, destroyed, and Luke and Leia live happily ever after because they aren't brother and sister.

Other than Star Wars, favorites include, in no real order:

-The Back to the Future Trilogy

-Kill Bill Vol 1 &2

-Army of Darkness (cut varies)

-Raiders of the Lost Ark

-Metropolis

-Superman 1 & 2 (Mankiewicz script version that pretty much exists only in my head with the existing movies only serving as a visual reference to what could have been).

-Gran Torino

-The Outlaw Josey Wales

-Dawn of the Dead (1978, cut varies)

-The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou

-Lost in Translation

-Pleasantville

-The Matrix

-Brazil

-Scott Pilgrim vs the World

-Kick Ass

-Battle Royale

-Captain Blood

-The Exorcist

-Hot Fuzz

-Independence Day

-Total Recall

-The Day the Earth Stood Still

-Ed Wood

-Jaws

-Avatar

-Fight Club

-Fright Night

-Mr Smith Goes to Washington

-The Shawshank Redemption

-American Beauty

What was the "fatal flaw" of the Prequels if you think they sucked? (aka. Let's take a break from hating on the blu-rays)
Time

While I don't consider it to be a fatal flaw, I think the real problem started with Empire Strikes Back.  Prior to the development of Empire Strikes Back, Star Wars was looking to be a much more light hearted series.  I get the feeling it would have been a lot more like Indiana Jones were each movie was an all new adventure for the Star Warriors.  GL even talked about having other filmmakers come in an take a stab at some continuing adventures with his characters.  I think it would have played out like an ongoing comic book with each movie being a new story arc.

Instead, Empire comes along and makes Darth Vader Luke's father and establishes that Star Wars was episode 4, there are now 3 prequels about Anakin, and at least one more sequel since Empire ended on a cliffhanger.  Empire may have been great, but it marked the beginning of the interconnected 6 part melodrama that we ended up with instead of the continuing adventures of Luke Skywalker and the Star Warriors that we could have gotten.  It could have been better, but then again, it could have been worse.

While I don't think it's fair to compare Empire to the prequels, as far as I'm concerned, it was the same line of thought that produced both.

I always knew there was something about the scores for TPM and AOTC that felt a little off.  I will say that the ROTS score was amazing though.

And even that had some stuff tinkered (AOTC's finale was different: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjkjY18n500&feature=player_embedded)

It's pretty interesting but I think the Imperial March version works better IMO.  Where did that come from BTW?

What's the coloring like in the Marvel reprints? I recall Dark Horse reprinted the Star Wars adaptation a short time before their own SE versions came out, and they were recolored in an almost totally bland palette compared to the originals.

They look pretty good to me but I have nothing really to compare it too.  I suppose if I were feeling really ambitious, I could take one of my Omnibus editions over to my brothers house and talk him into digging out his original issues for comparison.

I suppose I should top this off with a question. I was wondering if any of these older Dark Horse comics had been collected in trade paperback form? The Shadows of the Empire comic has a timeline and a few titles mentioned there interest me. Here's the titles listed in that timeline:

TALES OF THE JEDI series:
The Golden Age of the Sith
The Fall of the Sith Empire
Ulic Qel-Droma & The Beast Wars of Onderon
The Saga of Nomi Sunrider
Thre Freedon Nadd Uprising
Dark Lords of the Sith
The Sith War

DROIDS

STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE
Splinter of the Mind's Eye
Classic Star Wars: The Early Adventures
River of Chaos
Classic Star Wars

THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK

Shadows of the Empire

RETURN OF THE JEDI

Classic Star Wars: The Vandelhelm Mission
X-Wing Rogue Squadron

Heir to the Empire
Dark Force Rising
The Last Command
Dark Empire
Dark Empire II
Boba Fett
Empire's End

[Umm... I thought the empire ended when Palpatine died in Return of the Jedi?]

Your best bet is to check out the new Dark Horse Star Wars Omnibus editions for most of these.  There are a lot already out and they're still coming.

Tales of the Jedi if available in full in two volumes:

http://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Omnibus-Tales-Jedi/dp/1593078307/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1317185387&sr=8-1

http://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Omnibus-Tales-Jedi/dp/1593079117/ref=pd_sim_b1

Splinter of the Minds Eye and River of Chaos are both collected in one volumes along with Tales of Mos Eisley and Shadow Stalker.

http://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Omnibus-Early-Victories/dp/B005DI8RXQ/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1317185572&sr=1-1

Shadows of the Empire is available by itself in an older edition...

http://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Shadows-Empire-Horse/dp/1569711836/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1317185724&sr=1-3

...but for just a few dollars more you can get a collected edition that contains the sequel, Shadows of the Empire Evolution and Mara Jade, by the Emperor's Hand which is a great companion to both Shadows of the Empire and the Thrawn trilogy.

http://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Omnibus-Shadows-Empire/dp/1595824340/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1317185887&sr=1-2

X-Wing is availabe in it's entirety in 3 volumes.

http://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Omnibus-X-Wing-Squadron/dp/B005DI8AXI/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1317186016&sr=1-1

http://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Omnibus-X-Wing-Squadron/dp/B005DI8DSU/ref=pd_sim_b1

http://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Omnibus-X-Wing-Squadron/dp/B005HKM0HY/ref=pd_sim_b1

The Thrawn trilogy and Dark Empire trilogy are both available in two respective hardcover editions.

http://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Trilogy-Mike-Baron/dp/1595824170/ref=sr_1_4?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1317186214&sr=1-4

http://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Empire-Trilogy-Horse/dp/1595826122/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1317186239&sr=1-1

I'm not sure which Boba Fett series you are referring to but he has a nice collection as well which contains all the old mini series and a few one shots from Star Wars:  Empire.

http://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Omnibus-Boba-Fett/dp/1595824189/ref=sr_1_4?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1317186594&sr=1-4

The Entire Marvel series is collected in the multi-volume A Long Time Ago Omnibus.  The original movie adaptation is in volume 1, Empire Strikes Back is in either volume 2 or 3 (not sure which) and Return of the Jedi is in volume 4.  5 and up are all the post Jedi Marvel comics.

If you aren't interested in getting the Marvel series but just the movie adaptations, Empire and Jedi are collected in one edition along with the prequel adaptations and the special edition version of A New Hope.  A New Hope is entirely different from the old Marvel version as it was done as a tie in to the re-release in 1997, but I'm about 90 percent sure that Empire and Jedi are unchanged.

http://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Omnibus-Long-Ago/dp/1595824863/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1317187475&sr=8-2

http://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Omnibus-Episodes-Complete/dp/159582832X/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1317187514&sr=1-1

How do others see the originaltrilogy.com community?
Time

I actually pretty much left the site for awhile once the flame war over the Vader "Nooooo" hit.  The hate in the air was just to much to handle.  While there are a great number of people here that I have the utmost respect for, there are still those few crazies that make me want to pull my hair out every time they post.  And these people make the rest of us look like a bunch of assholes.  It's not as though our cause is completely crazy either.  I listen to the forcecast every week, a gushers podcast if there ever was one, and even those guys think the original versions ought to be preserved for all the same reasons we do.

Lack of a good solid outline.

Even though Episode 1 is my least favorite of the prequels, that particular film still feels like a lot of planing went into it.  2 and three on the other hand feel really choppy and uneven, like they were rushed to completion.  Much like a lot of the crap that came out around the writers strike.

I think if Lucas had put together a much more clear idea of what was going into each movie from the outset and really fleshed those ideas out rather than going into production with scripts that weren't even finished, then they would have played out much more smoothly.

I do like that they are basically using the Clone Wars to address some of these story telling issues with the movies but they shouldn't have to.

How did he get back there?

Oh, that's easy....he CRAWLED back there with his little robot ARMS AND LEGS!!!!

Droids can now use the force because of midichlorians in their oil baths.  You see, because Anakin took one of his first major steps towards the dark side in the Lars homestead garage, there were traces of his midichlorians left behind so that even years later, when R2 came along and took an oil bath (presumably right before 3PO's) he became infused with the force and he was able to move the rock aside and then place it back to hide himself from the Sand People.  Duh!

And they have added a bloody Dug into jabbas Palace walking down the steps. Definitely forcing the prequels down our throats

Can we get a screen capture of that?

Here Ya Go!

I'm fine with the idea of him adding a few of the prequel aliens into the mix, but why does he have to be walking around all by himself while everyone is asleep.  It's like he's saying "hey, look at me, I'm new!"

Lando's excursion to the blob races

What?

Get ready for this...

Wookieepedia said:

A blob race was a bizarre contest of speed between protoplasmic, gelatinous Umgullian blobs through a course of obstacles—from fine mesh screens to a bed of nails. It was a major betting sport in Umgul City on the planet Umgul. The syrupy masses, usually grayish green but laced with bright hues, rolled, slithered, and oozed their way through. Cheating on the races was punishable by death.

and

Wookieepedia said:

The typical blob was a base color of sickly green. Most, however, were patterned with vivid spots and stripes. There were many subspecies of blob, some bred for racing, some bred as domestic pets and some even for medicinal purposes. All, however, consisted almost solely of a large mass of jelly-like fluid encased in a thin membrane. This membrane was thin enough to let the moisture of Umgul's foggy atmosphere to pass through. This skin also had the ability to break and then reform instantly. This allowed the blob to split into two new blobs. These new blobs would behave exactly like the original blob until, at any point, they were able to re-merge into one. This was also how the blobs reproduced; when a blob grew to the appropriate size, it would divide into two equal, smaller blobs, like giant amoebae

and finally...

Wookieepdia said:

Along with C-3PO and R2-D2, [Lando] was led to the Umgullian Blob races in search of the possible Force-sensitive. The individual they were searching for, Dack (also known as Tymmo), turned out to be a cheater on the blob races instead of a Force-sensitive, and Calrissian helped expose him. When Calrissian went to confront Tymmo at the blob stables, he found that the man had planted something on one of the blobs. Tymmo did not take kindly to being discovered and a short firefight at the corral ensued before security forces arrived to subdue him. Rather than suffer the usual death penalty for cheating, Tymmo was returned to his wife Mistal, the Duchess of Dargul. As a reward for Calrissian's help in returning her husband, Mistal gave him one million credits.

So... now you know.

The whole time I was reading it, I kept thinking of playing Mercury on the PSP.

I just picked up Jedi Search yesterday and I ended up reading half the book in one sitting.  Minus Lando's excursion to the blob races, I think it's pretty kick ass.  This will be the first EU book I've read minus the graphic novel adaptation of the Thrawn Trilogy.

After I finish Jedi Academy and go back and read the regular Thrawn Trilogy, I was thinking about skipping on ahead to Hand of Thrawn.  Are there any other books in between that people would recommend or are they pretty much all crap as I've heard?
