Idea: Star Wars Trilogy All in One Edit

Hmm...well this is just a suggestion, but after the Luke and Vader duel from Jedi, Vader could go with Luke to help him destroy the Death Star in an effort to undo what he helped the emperor to create.  And since you're pretty much making this fan edit with little use of ROTJ, then maybe you could have Vader live at the end and join the Rebels.

Hmm, I like that.  However, there wouldn't really be any aftermath shots so I think I'd rather have Vader die in the battle, but go out saving Luke perhaps.  Heck, Vader coming in to help could even be a surprise to replace Han's surprise assistance since Han will be in the battle to start with.

It isn't really a matter of special edition or not since a lot of stuff would be cut out anyway.  No Jabba subplot would equal no Jabba scenes, no dance number, no sarlacc pit, and no Greedo.  The celebration around the galaxy ending would be rendered unnessisary as well since I would probably end it with the medal cerimony from A New Hope (probably Adywan's version so Chewie can get his medal).  The only special edition elements I may use are the more dynamic ship shots from A New Hope.

I haven't started doing anything yet and if I did I think I might wait until the blu rays are released just so I'll have a more complete set of materials to work with.  I would also probably need some assistance to create some of the new shots like the Falcon approaching Hoth since I don't really have any experience with After Effects.

Idea: Star Wars Trilogy All in One Edit
Time

So I’m trying to come up with ideas for a possible edit to combine the entire trilogy into one film that might resemble the complete film that Lucas claims to have had in mind all along.  True or not, I think it might be cool.  The problem I’m having is trying to find a way to piece it all together into a coherent story.  He’s some ideas I have so far and if anybody has any ideas for how to tie it together or opinions on the idea in general, I’d love to hear them.  My main reason for wanting to do this is to try to remove as much of the crap in Return of the Jedi from the film as possible except for the key stuff and reorganize the rest of the films accordingly to accommodate this.

-Only one Death Star which would appear at the very end of the joined movie.  Luke would still be the one to blow up the death star but at the same time, the much more elaborate battle from Jedi will be intact.  Possibly replace Wedge with Luke and actually have him fly into the core with the Falcon.

-Have the Falcon during the Endor battle be flown by Han instead of Lando.  Cut in unused clips from other parts of the movie and perhaps other clips from Mr. Ford and Mr. Hamill’s body of work to create additional tactical conversation between the two during the battle.

-No Jabba subplot at all.  Han never gets frozen which allows for the complete removal of the opening of Jedi.  Perhaps even no Cloud City, no Lando, and even no Boba Fett.

-Somehow make the Empire duel between Vader and Luke occur on the Death Star at some point instead of cloud city.  Luke doesn’t let himself fall and is instead taken to the Emperor right then and there.

-After escaping from the Death Star with Leia in A New Hope, they go straight to the Rebel base on HOTH.  This would require new effects shots of the Falcon arriving and landing on Hoth.  They have the plans but they are still ill equipped to take it on.  Then the homing beacon aboard the Falcon leads the Empire to Hoth (not the probe droid).

-Luke’s Jedi training with Yoda occurs all at once and Yoda dies before he ever leaves…or, Luke still leaves but returns to see Yoda only at the very end of the film to discover he is now a Jedi.

-No brother and sister, no Yoda saying “there is another.”

-No Ewok battle at all.  Han and Chewie are in the Falcon and Leia is in the tactical room from A New Hope.  In other words, Jedi is basically gone except for the fight with Vader and the Death Star battle.

A major problem I have is how can I have the movie end with Luke confronting Vader and the Emperor and still have Luke blow up the Death Star.  Basically I want something that plays out like A New Hope but with the Jedi training, the confrontation with Vader and the Hoth Stuff still intact.  Might be impossible I know, but still, it’s worth thinking about.

Idea: Extended Original Trilogy Wishlist
Time

I've always liked the Biggs scenes simply because I think they help stregthen Luke'Ts character which to me is what it's all about.  The problem though with cutting it in, is that in the Treadwell scene has to occur before the blockade runner docks with the star destroyer since when he sees them, they are still firing on each other but there isn't a whole lot of time between the opening shot and the docking where it could be cut in and I certainly wouldn't want the scene to go before the opening shot.  Any ideas for where it could be cut in?

The Echo base Wampa scenes might be cool but I doubt they would be complete enough to put them back in.

For Jedi I would want the Sandstorm scene and shorten their goodbyes from the cockpit to remove redundancy.  I always though the part where Han discribes what it's like to be frozen would have been really cool.  And I'd really like to see the Crix Madine and Falcon gunner scenes mixed back into the battle.

Idea: Extended Original Trilogy Wishlist
Time

So we all know there will be a bunch of extra deleted scenes on the blu rays and I’d really like to see someone attempt an extended version of the trilogy once they are available.  But if the quality of the scenes aren’t so good, I think I would be pretty cool if they could be cut into the Puggo Editions to make “grindhouse” editions.  I know TMBTM already has a grindhouse version of A New Hope but I was thinking something more along of the line of the Little Shop of Horrors Grindhouse.  I might attempt it myself if nobody else jumps on it although my skills probably wouldn’t produce a very good result.

I has a sad whenever I read something like this.

Yeah, I suppose your right.  I just can't get enough of my Yoda bouncing around like a monkey with a glow stick.  But if you want really sad, you should see my Special Edition of Howard the Duck.

George Lucas Quotables - Currently : "When 'Star Wars' first came out, I didn't know where it was going either. "

Actually, it all makes sense now.  Lucas is screwing with us just for the lulz.  Lucas probably checks in on originaltrilogy.com everyday and just laughs at our sad cries over something that if you really take a step back and think about, is actually quite trivial.  He probably just calls us a bunch of nerds.  Ok Lucas, you've got us.  The joke was funny.  NOW GIVE US THE DAMN THEATRICALS BUTT HEAD!  OR I'LL TELL GK AND ML ON YOU.

New Blu Ray Special Editions
Time

Here's an idea, what if he added all the effects Ray Harryhausen style.  He has claimed that his original idea for doing Jabba in A New Hope was with a stop motion creature.  It would still look new but at least it would be up to 70s special effects standards.

And I certainly don't have a problem with him using new digital effects for the composite like when he cleaned up the matte lines and transparent frames in the Hoth Battle and Rancor pit.

New Blu Ray Special Editions
Time

I don't really have a problem with the existence of the special editions, other than the fact that they are the only versions that Lucas will restore.  But a thought crossed my mind given the pending blu ray releases.

What if Lucas were to keep all his special edition changes, but go back and redo the visual effects so that they look more realistic.  The biggest issue I have with the special editions is that you can tell what has been added very easily.  But I really think that if Jabba, the Dewbacks, the Jabbas palace dancers, and the sarlacc looked more realistic like Gollum, then they'd be much easier to digest.

I'm still hoping a praying for the theatrical versions like everybody else, but I still think there is a place for the special editions and I'd really like to see them perfected as well.

What do you guys think?

Star Wars could have been a modern day Iliad.
Time

There is a simple way past this whole problem.  Just ignore all the continuations and look at Star Wars as a stand alone movie.  Sure, Empire is good, but without the proper finale to live up to it, it all fell kinda flat.  Star Wars has a complete story from beginning to end and the only loose ends that get taken care of in the later movies are loose ends created by the later movies.  The only major loose end left unturned was the fact that Vader was still running around, but Vader was more or less just a big hit man guy in the first film.  Luke hasn't been trained to be a Jedi yet sure, but the full concept of what it even means to be a Jedi isn't really established until Empire.  And as far as the rebellion goes, in theory, the whole conflict could have been over right there at the end since the Death Star was really the only trump card the Empire had up it's sleeve to dismantle the Senate.  Remember that the guy said that is was impossible for the Emperor to maintain control without them, to which Tarken responds that it will be the fear of the Death Star that keeps them in line.  So no Death Star, no fear, no Tarken, no control.

Puggo Strikes Back! (Released)
Time

I actually think the blue look is a result of the aging.  I recall seeing a documentary from back when they first did the special editions that showed the old print they had to work from and it was extremely blue.  I could be wrong though.  I'm not a film expert.

For anyone having trouble with WMP or VCL for the demo, I found Media Player Classic works perfectly for me.

Which version/release of the Star Wars movies do you watch and why?

For me, it kinda depend on whether I'm in prequel mood or not.  Sometimes I watch all six and I stick to the official DVD versions but when I'm in original trilogy only mode I watch either Adywan's SW Revisited or the Lucasfilm Pwnage Edition, Adywan's ESB Theatrical Restoration, and Harmy's Jedi Theatrical Restoration.

I also some times like to watch the original Star Wars on its own without any of the sequels or prequels and imagine that Vader really did kill Luke's Father, the Emperor really was just a powerless figurehead under the influence of officials like Tarken (as the Novel prologue implies), Han used his reward to pay off Jabba right away, Luke and Leia aren't brother and sister, and the senate came back together on it's own without the Death Star to keep them in fear.  It actually makes for a completely different movie experience that way.

On a side not, my favorite version of Star Wars period is the Radio Drama since it goes into so much more detail about the Empire as well as the full Biggs Darklighter subplot which I feel is sorely missed from the movie because I feel it adds so much to Luke's character and motivation.  Star Wars from the Adventures of Luke Skywalker is a close second followed by the Manga adaptation.

Info Wanted: Anamorphic GOUTs? I have SW, anyone done ESB & ROTJ?
Time

I just recently got my hands on the Lucasfilm Pwnage Edition of Star Wars and was very happy.  But I can’t seem to find anybody who’s done a similar job to Empire or Jedi.  I’m not looking for a reconstruction.  Just a DVD 5 with the letterbox cropped and the disk re-authored.  Does anybody have any clues?

ADigitalMan's Guide to MPEG2/AC3 Editing

Great info but I'm having a bit of a problem.  I have a copy of Sony Vegas and I've tried dragging my VOB files into my project.  When I try to put them on the time line, the video from the clip plays much faster than the audio and glitches like crazy.  I tried downloading Wombie just to use the GOP Fixer and followed your steps but it doesn't seem to make a difference.  Any idea what I need to do to the video before Vegas will accept it properly?

Wanting to start fan editing.
Time

Hey everybody.  I'm interested in getting started on some of my own fanedits but I'm a bit confused on how to get started.  I have DVD Decrypter and am familiar with how to use it and I have a copy of Sony Vegas.  My question is, once I get the file pulled what's the best way to convert it to load it into Sony Vegas.  What program would be the best to do this and what settings should I use.  Once I get to that point, I should have no problem with the editing side of things.  Any advise you all could give me would be much appreciated.
