Problems with 2004 ANH disc?
Time
That's more like it. You'll still need to use a PAL source if you're going to use them for re-editing. With all the times "Region 1" gets the best DVD release, it's good to have a clear winner by PAL. The same could be said about the Alien Quad, apparently the "Region 1" is better because you can listen to the audio commentary on both versions of each film, and you can view deleted scenes place markers while watching the films - it seems that the ability to listen to commentaries on both versions was something they did "because they could" - people claimed 30 minutes of commentary would be missing from the Alien 3 disc since on the PAL release you can only listen to it on the Theatrical Cut. Since then it's become apparent that no commentary is missing from the PAL discs, and to fill in the gaps in Alien 3 at least, they'd just repeat some of the commentary already used.

This is stupid, because it means the Region 1 owners have no idea which version they *should* watch with the commentary other than guesswork (they should watch the version that the PAL's were given for commentary since they're complete and with the version to which it refers).

Which means in the end the only thing of value Region 1 got was deleted scene place markers - which is not worth sacrificing 16% of the resolution for. Making, in my opinion, another clear winner for PAL (Regions 2&4).

Even if you don't care about that, about originality or anything and think the change should be allowed if it's half-decent, I think you'll still be disappointed. We didn't need to "know" how Vader found out who Luke is - nor does the Emperor need to prove he knows, it's just dumbing-down. But the Emperor now looks just like he does in ROTJ for anyone that cares about THAT.

Fan Made Star Wars DVD set???

I disagree rik, I saw the SE's FIRST (and i might add not in theaters), and I never want to see them again. They may as well be forgotten. The new Jabba scene is so awful I shrudder to think what it's like in the 1997 version. I heard Han's "dodge" is meant to look more "natural" in this release - it looks silly and crap, so I shrudder to think what it looks like in the 1997 SE's.

Disappointing DVD package (re the 2004 OT SE release)
Time
One problem is I'm comparing anamorphic pal to non-anamorphic ntsc, so the official version has 30% more resolution, and no 2:3 pulldown, and that alone makes a huge difference.

-edit- 30% more resolution? Anamorphic NTSC is 17% less resolution... Non-Anamorphic NTSC is 38% less resolution...

Official Anamorphic PAL DVDs use 432 lines. The non-anamorphic NTSC laserdiscs use 276 lines... which makes the actuall LD resolution 36% less than the official (PAL) DVDs.

yeah. I hadn't seen those THINGS the stormtroopers are on in the movie in a long time (thanks to hating the 1997 SE). They were put straight into weekly hire, and the bonus disc is with return of the jedi (the movies are separate). Above is what Palpy says to Vader, now making Vaders line "search your feelings, you know it to be true" at the end of Empire completely stupid if you're watching it for the first time. Also all of the new effects (and I mean ALL) make it look like it doesn't belong in the film and draws me out of the experience. I'm ahead with the timeline too, so it's like 3 days before the official release in the US that I hired it - oh the irony. They just cracked their boxes open today!
