Its mentioned in some bts book.

This gives me hope that we might see this in a future edition, as it is the ending I've wanted since the prequels. Qui-Gon is the one who discovered the "One with the Force" ability, not to mention he is responsible for Anakin becoming a Jedi. Padme's love with Anakin was a defining, driving force for both their characters, and being Luke and Leia's mother, she deserves to be there as well. My order of events:
-Luke first looks off into distance
-Obi-Wan, Anakin, and Yoda appear in their old forms
-Cut back to Luke and Leia comes over to bring him back to the celebration
-The original three ghosts morph into their younger selves, with Padme appearing at Anakin's side
-Luke smiles as seeing his mother and the Jedi in their prime, rejoining the group
-Qui-Gon appears beside Obi-Wan
-The original final shot of the OT characters
-The NEW final shot of the SAGA characters, the Force spirits

Most of you will probably hate that, but that's what I'd like to see.

The changes made to the Original Trilogy films down the years...
Time
Great sig, Utapau! My response would be:

Return of the Jedi, released in 1983. I had a trio of good guys, a damsel in distress, and two really bad guys; the not-so-bad of the two being the father to one of the three good guys and the damsel, who marries one of the other good guys, while the third good guy is busy flying the seconsd guy's ship.

Why Kill Padme?
Time
I agree, thematically she had to die. Without an onscreen death there is no closure for her character, and considering she was a major player in the first three episodes, having her just "fade away" between trilogies would be weak to say the least. I understand Lucas' need to have SOME mention of her in the OT, but it was too little, too late, too...confusing. The absence of any references to Padme in the OT aside from Leia's short remembrance are now a glaring continuity error. They weren't back in the 80s, as Anakin's wife was just the dead mom nobody talked about; fair enough. The current situation with Padme is comparable to if Han and Leia had gotten married and had children n RotJ, but Leia died in childbirth at the end of the film, only to be completely forgotten in Episodes 7, 8 , and 9. Lucas really should have fleshed out the backstory and formed some more concrete plotpoints for Mrs. Skywalker back during the OT days.

Things being as they are, the best way to have handled this in RotS would be to have Leia born first, Padme hold her for a while, make eye contact, name her, and kiss her. Then she would go into a new set of contractions as the unexpected Luke arrives. She'd name him, then say "There's good in him; I know there is still," and die before getting to hold or look at Luke. This is what I think we were all expecting to happen; of course, that's probably why it didn't.

Computer & Camera Advice
Time
I am happy to announce I post from the above mentioned computer!

Again, I appreciate the advice, but I already have a still digital camera. I'm now in the market for a digital VIDEO camera in the ballpark of $500+.

Also, I have a friend who can hook me up with some video editing software, so considering my machine and what I have to work with, any thoughts on what would be best for me at this point? I have experience with Final Cut Pro, but I don't think there's a Windows version of that available. I've heard good things about Adobe; is it a comparable program? And what about capturing video from DVD and VHS? Should whatever program I get dictate what hardware I should get for that?

Episode 3: Fan Editing Ideas Discussion

I had several relatives who had not seen 1 and 2, but loved 3. They went back and watched 1 and 2 afterwards and got all confused by all the unresolved plotlines they caused. I found it funny that they all think 3 works better if you've never seen 1 and 2.

Agreed. And its not just plot points; take the Anakin/Padme relationship, for example. Their scenes together are quite good in 3, but audiences moan and groan regardless due to the evoking of memories from 2. If you just see their marraige and interaction from 3, you can imagine the rest, but it's ruined by their botched "romance" in 2.

And, Hardcore Legend, the concept of your scene alteration is good, but it makes no sense story wise. This Vader character comes out of nowhere, asks about Obi-Wan, and Palpatine tells him he killed him? There are a variety of ways to do something along the lines of what you're talking about to improve the scene, however, depening on how you want to approach the Anakin/Vader thing. Asking about Obi-Wan is good, as it makes sense for Anakin to do so considering not too long ago he was the one who mutilated his body. If it could somehow be established they think he's dead/in hiding that would answer a plot hole or two. Then he could ask about Padme, and the scene could continue as nomal, with whatever changes are necessary to make the last shot more respectable. My suggestion would be slowing down the footage so that Vader is not swaying back and forth and combining the "NO" with a couple of other Vader grimaces from the OT, making for a tremendous, unintelligible noise.

For example:
P: Lord Vader? Can you hear me?
V: Yes, my master. Where is Obi-Wan?
P: Hiding. It is of no concern. Soon the Jedi will be wiped out, and we shall have have revenge. (Pieced together from various Palpatine dialogue)
V: And...Padme? Is she safe? (scene continues as normal...)

Thanks for the input guys, I appreciate it. As for the laptop, the plan is to get it tomorrow, but keep our options open with the camera, as there's still research to be done in that area. Your suggestions, while top notch, are a bit out of my league. Do you have any recommendations in the ballpark of $500, give or take a couple of hundred bucks? Or is that too low?

Computer & Camera Advice
Time
I'm going into college next year (younger than you might have thought, huh?) and am in the market for a laptop computer. Basically I just want a computer that will take care of all the basic stuff, and also be a good machine for video editing. My dad and I have done the research and pretty much decided on this one.

Since it's going to be my computer for a long time to come, we want to get a top-of-the line machine. And I really want to stick with Windows, although I know many would recommend an Apple. I'm also going to be getting a digital camera, and have way too many options for that. Not only will I be editing existing multimedia, I will also be doing quite a bit of filming of my own. I'd prefer to use tapes over the DVDs, but is there really that much of a difference? Any advice in that area as well would be greatly appreciated; I figured you guys would be good people to ask.

Thanks,
CC

And I love the "You're not Superman" line in Spiderman II. That was great.

Yes! Smallville is one of my favorite shows, the first season definitely being my favorite. Btw, Aunt May's line to Peter was actually in Spider-Man I.

An great Star Wars example of this would be in TPM, when Qui-Gon and Anakin discuss his lightsaber:

Anakin: You're a Jedi knight, aren't you?
Qui-Gon: What makes you think that?
Anakin: I saw your laser sword. Only Jedi carry that kind of weapon.
Qui-Gon: Perhaps I killed a Jedi and took it from him.
Anakin: I don't think so; no one can kill a Jedi!
Qui-Gon: I wish that were so.

This is some of my favorite SW dialogue. Here we have Anakin, future slaugterer of Jedi, insisting to Qui-Gon that Jedi are invincible. Qui-Gon, the only Jedi to die in the film, sadly informs him that it isn't so.

I can see the whole continuity thing you're going for with Yoda, but I find it infinitely cooler that R2 is the only one who knows what's going on the whole time. That, and the scene in question where Bail tells Antillles to erase C-3PO's memory (with R2 laughing) is classic Star Wars humor. And what is the big deal with R2 fighting Yoda anyway? Regardless if he knew who he was not not, he was stealing Luke's property and R2 wasn't going to stand for it. That's how I see it anyway.

Episode II: Shroud of the Dark Side (the TM edit) (Released)

Sounds good. Or I hope it does. Whatever. But do try to avoid reverse dialogue whenever possible; I found that to be the most distracting part of MagnoliaFan's efforts, not the Spanish or French.

Also, I like the general idea of what you're doing with the lake and fireside scenes, but won't the transition between the two be a bit odd? They are outside in one set of clothes and...their conversation continues inside with different attire?

I look forward to receiving your edit, DE, and as I now have DVD copying technology of my own (I was previously relying on a couple of friends), I would be happy to join the cause and help out with US distribution. I should be getting my copy in the next couple of days, so PM me if you're interested.

Ideas: I've been gone for some time now...

In "Star Wars Visionaries" there is a short story called "Old Wounds," featuring a half-cyborg, ressurected Darth Maul having a final confrontation with Obi-Wan at the Lars Homestead. As the they duel, Maul reveals he has been hutning Obi-Wan for years, just missing him on Kamino, Geonosis, Mustafar, etc. While this obviously wouldn't be a cut-and-paste as Grevious would have a different history, the general idea of conveying what he had been up to the last 13 years is what we're going for.

You mentioned Eopies; when Qui-Gon returns ot the ship with the parts, the frames need to be reversed. You can tell by Obi-Wan's padawan braid being on the wrong side. Lucas admits this in the DVD commentary, thinking he would have to reverse the shot for some reason, but he ended up not having to. What originally was a smart creative decision is now a continuity error due to the lack of frame reversal, so that needs to be corrected. That the first thing I thought of when you said Eopies.

Your mention of NINE films has me very interested. The more scrolls the more you can alter the story, so elaborate a bit on this if you can. ESB and RotJ are good for breaking up into more films, and in fact it might solve some plot holes. As for titles, "Duel of the Fates" isn't a proper film title, IMO. And I've been saying time and time again on these boards that "Dark Force Rising" (taken from the Zahn novel) would be a perfect title for Episode 2. But now, however, I'm thinking "Dark Force Ascendent" would be better; sounds more epic. Just something to consider.

The tone poems go as follows:

Qui-Gon
It will be a hard life.
One without reward, without remorse, without regret.
A path will be placed before you, the choice is your's alone.
Do what you think you cannot do.
It will be a hard life, but you will find out who you are.

Maul
Fear.
Fear attracts the fearful.
The strong. The weak. The innocent. The corrupt.
Fear. Fear is my ally.

There are also tone poems for Anakin, Amidala, and Shmi; all of these can be found on the DVD.

And lenghty is not a problem. This is the kind of in-depth discussion these forums are all about. Although I don't have Photoshop, I do use Photosuite, a similar program. I'm not sure if that could be of any help though.

Ideas: I've been gone for some time now...
Time
This seems a good a thread as any to share some ideas I have about Qui-Gon Jinn and Darth Maul. Qui-Gon is my favorite characer, Maul is yours, so this should lead to some good discussion.

QUI-GON
Qui-Gon Jinn is my favorite Jedi, and in fact my favorite character in Star Wars. Liam Neeson being an incredible actor probably has something to do with it as well. His death in Episode 1, while necessary and expected, was emotional nonetheless. Any way to extend his role in the saga would be beneficial, as he is THE main character in 1, and his absence leaves an empty feeling throughout 2 and 3. Ben got a substantial comeback in ESB and RotJ; Qui-Gon deserves the same. Now, how to accomplish this? Voiceovers will be key, as unfortunately Jinn returning in spirit form would seem nearly impossible. One excellent source would be the Episode 1 tone poem. A version of it could be played, in Anakin's head I suppose, during Qui-Gon's funeral. The scene would have to be extended of course, but it could work. Another spot for it could be in Episode 3 when Anakin and Padme look out across Coruscant. However it might disrupt the eerie silence of the scene, and we wouldn't want to do that. Then there's Qui-Gon's short dialogue in Clone Wars. Even though it is not Liam Neeson, it sounds just like him, and could possibly be inserted as Anakin kills the Tusken Raiders. Other films are an excellent source for Neeson dialogue, as he has a tendency to play wise, mentor characters. Kingdom of Heaven, and especially Batman Begins might prove to be very useful. And of course there's Qui-Gon's deleted scene in RotS, which had better be on the DVD; that's a seriously important scene. It was suggested in another thread Qui-Gon could also speak to Yoda as he lies defeated on the floor of the Senate, influencing his decision to flee. That's an interesting scenario, but I'm not sure about the logistics of it all. I also have a thought about both Qui-Gon and Padme appearing in RotJ, but that's for another time.

MAUL
Darth Maul was an awesome villain, and it was a shame he had to be killed off so easily. Episode 3 gave Lucas a chance to bring him back in the form of General Grevious, but it was nothing but a missed opportunity. Grevious added nothing to the overall story as a character, and could EASILY have been a resurrected Maul. It was obvious all that was needed was a killing machine, so why invent a new one, a CYBERNETIC ALIEN no less, when you already have Maul in the perfect position to return in that form? Things were set up too well for him NOT to be Maul. But there are several logistics to be dealt with here. First off, the names. My solution is this: Since "Maul" is only mentioned by Sidious over a hologram, and "Grevious" is mentioned by numerous characters numerous times, regardless of which name you prefer, it would be prudent to change the character's name to "Darth Grevious." Which actually kind of fits: Plagueis>Sidious>Grevious. Secondly, wouldn't that make it THREE Sith? This also ties into the fact that Palpatine, Dooku, and Grevious are all working together, so Dooku being a rogue Jedi (as in Magnolia Fan's version) wouldn't quite work. Unless of course, through Grevious' new dialogue, it is revealed that Sidious and Grevious are manipulating Dooku for their own purposes (and Dooku is NOT Darth Tyranus; that character does not exist). Speaking of new Grevious lines, there is no question he should be dubbed over, in a mechanical voice as similar as possible to Maul's in Episode 1. If his fear speech from his tone poem could be worked in somewhere that would be great too. Some new dialogue along the lines of what Maul says to Obi-Wan in the infinities comic where he confronts him on Tatooine would go a long way in connecting the characters, with Grevious giving Obi-Wan his whole spiel before their duel. Grevious lightsabers would all be red, of his own making, not taken from Jedi; and when you think about it, his guards having double-bladed vibroblades makes a lot of sense considering his previous weapon of choice. Connections can be made musically as well. I really like the track "Grievous Speaks to Lord Sidious," so that can be incorporated into Episode 1, and the Sith chants that served as musical backup for Maul can be put into RotS. Overall, it will take a lot of work, but ultimately make for a stronger story with recurring menaces instead of one-off villains.

Hopefully I've shared some usefull ideas that can be used in future fan edits. I look forward to getting the technology required to make my own versions, as well as other video projects, so I can experiment with these ideas myself. I'm on the verge of getting a new laptop and digital camera, so I'll be asking for some advice on that in another thread. But for now, I offer my creative services to anyone who wants to discuss fan editing possibilities. As you can tell, I'm very interested in the process.
