Well it’s good to know some are open to outside collaboration from a newbie.

I’ve been talking to the eBay seller to confirm a few things and just thought y’all might be interested in seeing some other frame shots. http://jmp.sh/3PhPeJp http://jmp.sh/z789aOW http://jmp.sh/Ewoe69g http://jmp.sh/XbHL46G http://jmp.sh/P593Gnl

I’m still on the fence about the purchase, but it’s hard to say no to owning the film.

Consider this an official encouragement to purchase the print.

Actually, in that particular shot, the channel misregistration is different on the models and on the background, so it was clearly part of the original compositing and in order to fix it, Mike had to cut everything out of it’s background and shift each element separately, thus literally re-compositing the shot.

Any chance you can point me to what shot you’re referencing? I’m watching the legacy videos on Vimeo looking for it.

Edit: I believe I found it. Is it the shot of the X-wings on top of the Death Star? The original version has a stain in the top left corner that he fixes.

Thanks! Based on what he says in the video, he seems to ideally only want to remove the chanel errors introduced by the prints. It seems like if he had access to the negatives, he’d know what errors were original to the negatives.

Given the sources he has, I think he made the best choice.

As far as wanting it to look like a 35mm print, I’d fall on the other side of the fence. I want the movie to look as great as possible with only errors present in the original negatives to remain (but I would want all of those errors to remain).

I hope someone will be able to pick up the torch, and do (as they said they intended) with the 97s as was done with the OTVs - I think there’s opportunity with HD scans of the 97s alongside the OTVs and the 2004 HDTV rips, with the BDs.

I usually wouldn’t care about SE’s, but the way you put it, with the fan-OTV’s, HDTV rips and, of course, the BDs, you’re right that the 97SEs actually are the only hold outs of Star Wars versions to be available to fans in decent quality. For this small last step toward having all revisions available for people to choose from, I agree with you.

That and Empire 70mm.

Is that different from regular Empire?

Another thing I’ve already heard from several people is that the droid torture scene now has a blue tint.
That’s just not true - I think it now has very nice natural colors with a hint of blue from the lighting, where the old version had a strong sepia tint. This should really put it into perspective:

Look at that and tell me if v2.5 has a blue tint 😉

How on earth did that Blu-Ray ever get released? They really took the “Blu” to heart, I suppose.

(Yes yes I know the '04 DVDs were blue too)

REPORT-ROTJ-v2.5 - At the screen wipe at 4:57, there appears to be a weird glitch in the audio where it skips (for lack of a better word) momentarily. This appears to be present on all the audio tracks, so it may be native to the film. It’s present on 83 and 93 mixes.

This is a defect in the source tracks. I tried to get rid of it while assembling the audio mixes, but was unable due to lack of suitable material to patch over it. I found that while it is quite noticeable on headphones, it’s harder to hear it when listening on speakers, and not actively hunting for errors.

It could be a dropout in the music stems, it could be a bad edit of different takes, I’m not really sure, but it’s there in all versions as far as I can tell. There are also a few other things of that nature scattered through the film, but I’m not going to say where they are.

The 1986 US laserdisc I used for the '83 stereo mix had a large number of dropouts in various places, as well as a spot where the tape distorted pretty heavily for a moment. I patched over all of those with the 1989 SWE laserdisc, since they are not actually part of the mix itself and are just errors in that particular copy of it. If I hadn’t done this, there would be a great many more defects to point out.

Thanks for clarifying. Your work on these soundtracks is INCREDIBLE. In particular, I love the isolated score tracks, as they are a whole new way to watch these movies.

Thanks for explaining these to me, good to know the reason for them.

I noticed a bit of an anomaly (it may have been in the original version and I just didn’t notice it) at 00:02:58 to 00:03:06 you can see white Storm Troopers(?) walking across the Death Star (I assume they’re building it). There is a light box around them until they stop walking at 00:03:06. I don’t recall if this was in the original version or not and if so I just didn’t notice it before. I realize it’s a little late to be pointing this out so I’m going to assume it’s supposed to be there.

If it’s what I’m thinking it is, that’s a matte line. It was in the original, removed from the Special Editions (because it was unintentional but largely unavoidable in the original), and restored for the Despecialized Edition.

Actually it’s a matte box and the shot is unchanged from the BD, where it was in turn unchanged from the original version (as evidenced by the presence of matte boxes).

But I’ve never actually noticed those little guys before. Cool little detail!

Well, there you go. Thanks Harmy!

I’m rendering ROTJ v2.5 right now - ETA 10hrs. But I made so many changes since the last workprint and the project file got so big and complicated that I’m sure when I watch it, I will find that I forgot to turn some layer on or off or something stupid like that and will probably have to re-render but I have everything else ready, so currently, the intended release date is this Sunday.

Awesome! Thanks for all the hard work. Will it only be uploaded on MySpleen or will it be available through utoz again?

Generally, Harmy releases his stuff to utoz, then someone else uploads to MySpleen with Harmy’s blessing.

I can’t decide on whether I should download the Despecialized Edition of A New Hope, or the Team Negative 1 restoration. Which is better to any of you?

I’ll chime in and say that while TN1’s version is very cool, and certainly important from a preservation standpoint, Despecialized is more enjoyable to me for a casual viewing because of its lack of grain and weave. Basically, I’ll echo the sentiment that Despecialized is more like what the Blu-Rays should have been, while TN1’s version is a preservation of a theater print of the movie, warts and all.
