It actually does. If someone is as emotionally attached like Anakin they could easily be corrupted the way he was. Of course, I think that if the Jedi were not the way they were things would’ve gone completely different, so it’s more the Jedi’s fault than Anakin imo, but what I’m saying is that I think most married people would do anything for their loved ones if it means saving them from certain death, which COULD lead to the dark side, but not necessarily. If you know how to deal with it you’re fine. If you don’t, there is some chance that you’ll be corrupted by the dark side.

Judge The Last Jedi against its peers. Objectively it is a high quality family film. You can look at the professional critics opinions, aggregated on metacritic and rotten tomatoes. This is very good of its kind. Pirates Of The Caribbean, Transformers, Planet Of The Apes, Justice League. This is not opinion, this is the truth.

Shouldn’t you judge Star Wars vs Star Wars? They’re all Star Wars movies.

No, because if I say to you Collipso ‘what is your fave film of all time?’ and you reply “Empire Strikes Back” - then you are judging this new flick against the highest cinematic benchmark you’ve ever experienced. Nothing should have to attain such an unrealistic stretch target.

But if I say to you, “Collipso, out of the films you saw in 2017, which did you enjoy the most?”… and that film is The Last Jedi then I would say that’s a great success!

I see your point. However, I think we should judge a Star Wars movie against other Star Wars movies. If Star Wars movies have hit a certain mark in the past, I expect the other that follow it to do the same, to hit the same marks and if possible even more. If not, I won’t be impressed. In fact I’ll be a bit disappointed, that’s all.

I still really enjoyed both of my TLJ experiences. I do think that, as a movie, the first act is fairly weak and messy, and that the pace during that session is not very good at all. I also think some of the dialogue and writing decisions didn’t resonate well with me. But it’d still be a 7/10 or 7.5/10 for me, and that’s ok. What I don’t like are some of the directions taken with the characters. And I have my problems with the ST as a whole too.

PS: Star Wars is my favorite Star Wars movie, and my favorite movie of all time is probably The Godfather Part II.

If you want to compare TLJ to other Star Wars movies, why not include the prequels in this comparison? We finally have watchable Star Wars movies again, it might not be ESB level, but there are only two Star Wars movies which reached that, anyways. ROTJ is a solid movie, but compared to all Star Wars movies before it, it’s a letdown. TLJ, compared to all Star Wars movies before it, is closer to ESB than AOTC.

I do include the prequels and TLJ is certainly better than them. The prequels didn’t hit several of the marks that the OT and the ST did, but the ST didn’t hit some that only the OT did so far.

Is Anakin going to be a young adult/someone in his late teens, or is he going to be a kid in your Episode I? If you’re going to make him a young adult, but want to preserve the whole “attached to his mother” aspect of the original TPM, I’d suggest make he be responsible for Owen, and leaving Tatooine = leaving Owen alone. That way, the line “he didn’t want you to follow old Obi-Wan in some damned fool idealistic crusade like your father did” makes sense, and it ties the trilogy in a better way.

I’d also suggest making Episode I Obi-Wan AotC Obi-Wan, except that he’s not that wise.

If you’re going with the “Godfather II approach” though, I do not know how my suggestions would be of any use. 😄

The idea that attachment leads to the dark side makes sense but it’s a bit too strict. If it wasn’t for Luke’s compassion for Vader, things would’ve gone dark in the throne room.
