Disappointing about the blu-ray, but this means that whatever they played at the Plaza Atlanta wasn't the new 4k scan right?

But we really don't know that this wasn't sourced from the new 4k scan, do we?  How could we be sure they didn't just recreate the 2011 version from the new scan?

1. There's no way that Disney would recreate the 2011 coloring and Ben call.

2. The video of the new scan doesn't have the same coloring as 2011.

1.  Why wouldn't they if that is what is on the "official" blu-ray?

2. The Reliance video might not reflect the final work.

I'm just saying I don't think there's any way to know unless we hear from somebody that works at RMW.

Imagine all those people that paid 75 dollars to get in and they find themselves watching "The Next Karate Kid"

Actually, I bet there are still a few people left that still think they are seeing the original cut. There were a bunch of people on the theaters Facebook page that wanted to make sure it was te original before they purchased tickets. The theater confirmed that it was indeed the original version. Then they later corrected themselves.

And I actually watched the next karate kid 2 days ago...  True story.

I think one important thing to point out is that if people (in general) don't care about SE revisions, then they also wouldn't care about the lack of them. Disney must know this.

Actually it would be their strongest selling point.

The "excitement" of picking up the latest re-release to see what else has changed has worn off.

Now all they have left is to throw out the triumphant return of the theatrical editions brilliantly restored for the first time on blu-ray to drive up sales.

This brings in the large segment of people who stopped purchasing because of the SE nonsense.

That's why it's always funny to me when I hear some SE apologist make the argument that "only a small percentage of fans would buy it, most people are happy with the current release, etc."  We all know that a lot of people who purchased the 2011 BD will still purchase an OT release - especially if it's from a new 4k scan.  SW fans will always buy the latest, greatest video release as we have seen since the VHS days.

It just makes too much sense to do this next fall leading up to EP VII.  It's a no-brainer to us.  Now, do the Disney execs share this mentality?  I have no clue.  I've got to assume that they know a proper OT release would make money.  I'm still holding out hope.

So wait, the GOUT doesn't have the original mix?

Yes, it has the original stereo mix.

SW was first released in 70mm 6-track and 35mm stereo. When it went to a wide release in June '77, it was also released with a mono mix that contained a few changes and additions.

*edit - whoops, my mistake.  The GOUT contains the 93 mix.

That article is just going off of what they read on the Atlanta Plaza's website, but the theater still doesn't even know exactly what they are showing.  They first said it was the "original 1977 version". Then they clarified on their facebook page that it was "Star Wars IV ( 1977 special edition ) released in 1997"

They later posted an update on their website: "Disney officials confirmed that the digital print being provided the Plaza will be based on the Special Edition version which got a wide release in 1997."

Any mention of it being specifically the 97 version has only been used loosely to mean it is the special edition as opposed to the theatrical version.

Will be interesting to find out exactly what it is.

4K restoration on Star Wars

This guy was the director of image processing at Reliance/Lowry between 2006 and 2010 and said that a 4k restoration was done during his tenure.

Some of the more notable projects completed during my tenure were Avatar, Prometheus, The Amazing Spiderman, The Social Network, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. The Image Processing team completed 4K restorations of The Star Wars Trilogy and Titanic and 2K restorations of Alien, Aliens, Terminator, The Abyss and True Lies.

Sorry, 005, which is which?

I think it's: RMW/GOUT/Blu-ray.

And I highly doubt they re-did the SE's in 4k from scratch. That's them going back to each original element and the original negative AGAIN, scanning them AGAIN, redoing all of the CG AGAIN.

Perhaps not. I hope you're right.  But this also would have been before the Disney purchase was finalized if that staffers resume is accurate.  I have a hard time believing Lucasfilm would have been working on an OUT restoration at that time, while GL was technically still running the show.

the average Joe won't care or understand what this is all about

I see this mentioned here a lot, but in my experience (I know it's anecdotal), this simply isn't true. I've heard the biggest-non-nerds I know complain about SEisms. I overhear a lot of "I don't understand why they keep fucking around with the movie. It looks so fake." during office discussions with dry climb-the-corporate-ladder types.

They don't care about it as much as we do, but they definitely see through the bullshit.

Agreed.  This has been my experience as well.  Among most of the people I can think of off the top of my head (non-nerds included) the SE's are considered a joke.

Re-releasing the most popular movie saga of all time on the big screen in its original form (something hasn't been seen widely since the early 80's) would be a pretty big deal, IMO.

That staffer's resume indicates that she worked on it starting in september of 2012.  If that's the case, then I bet this was just a new SE master for the 3d releases that were eventually cancelled.

Judging by the changes made to the Blu-ray, it's my opinion that we got the 2D versions of what would have been released in 3D. Besides, why would they need to do "Restoration, Mapping, and Dirt Picking" the already way too clean 1080p Blu-ray masters in 4k?

No, what I meant was that this might have been a new 4k scan/restoration from original elements that was to be used as as the basis for the 3d releases.

Blu-Ray Of Unaltered Original Trilogy Rumour
Time

^It wasn't much.  They were discussing Black Angel and he just mentioned that as a possible extra:

"They're trying to put it out [Black Angel] with the digitized six Star Wars that are coming in November.  They're trying to see if they can do it.  They've never done it before - have additional material like that…"

I doubt it will be the originals, but who knows.  More than likely just a digital download with exclusive bonus content to entice fans into purchasing it.  But I still have hope they will be released before Ep VII.

Boba Fett Spin-Off May Put a New Character in the Armor
Time

I like it because it would be a way to return the mystique back to the character (as long as they don't tell us anything about him). Unmasking Boba Fett and showing him as a kid was one of the stupidest things Lucas ever did. He never understood why people liked him in the first place.

Boba Fett works perfectly as a Clint Eastwood/Man-with-no-name type of character.  (They even added a sound effect of spurs jingling when he walked in ESB).  So they have to find a way to give the "coolness factor" back to Fett.

I dont know, maybe they could just pretend the prequels never happened, but this sounds like a pretty decent way to do it.

something I always wondered about the PT
Time

I can't remember who it was, but somebody on the original SW crew (maybe the DP, Gilbert Taylor?) said that Lucas talked about Mos Eisley during the shoot as being reminiscent of a remote border town from a Sergio Leone western.  Then in the SE we get a bustling spaceport with slapstick droids and dinosaurs.

Obviously Lucas changed his mind during production of the SE's after becoming obsessed with CG.

Drew Struzan documentary - Drew: The Man Behind The Poster
Time

This doc is now available to watch on netflix streaming.  I watched it last night and loved it!  Seeing closeup shots of his original paintings was simply astounding and I now appreciate his work even more.  The movie also provides an interesting look into his personal life as well as the movie advertising business in general.  Well worth the watch.

Its sad to me that the movie poster has now become a lost art.

TFN's getting worse all the time.

I log on every once in awhile just to get a good laugh at how wacky they are.  They have one current thread 'ANH vs TPM' and you have to pick which one you enjoy more and why.   You have to read the replies from the people who picked TPM, and why they rank ANH as their least favorite!

Wow, I just read through some of that thread.  That was painful to look at.
