4K restoration on Star Wars

There would be no money or profits in releasing the OT in 4k. It would take too long, and they don't have the budget to clear up the legal issues for it. Not to mention straightening out the political issues which are a bigger.

It's not going to happen. Not in any way that would satisfy the people here.

Of course there is money to be made.  You are underestimating the demand for these.  Afterall, we're talking about the most popular movie saga in film history. Just about every Gen-X Star Wars fan would be interested in seeing a properly restored, theatrical trilogy, and as we've seen many times before with Star Wars home video releases, a huge number of fans who already purchased the blu-ray set would double dip on a new release.

Not to put too much weight in anecdotal evidence, but in my own little corner of the world, every single friend of mine and everyone I have talked to that is over 35 years old or so, all say the exact same thing:  Just give us the original movies before all the SE crap.  None of my friends even own the blu-rays and they would all be first in line for an OT release.

Anecdotal evidence aside, just look at the recent social media ads and articles about the digital releases and you can get an idea of what fans want.  The facebook ads alone from the Star Wars fan page were completely dominated by comments from people wanting only the theatrical versions.

And Robert Harris has already stated that the restoration would be relatively easy, at least compared to other projects that he has worked on, and at a modest price.

Again, this is freaking STAR WARS we are talking about.  The versions of these movies that ushered in one giant pop-culture phenomenon and defined the childhoods for countless people around the world are not currently available in a modern format.  Yes, the 2011 blu-rays sold well.  There was never any doubt they would.  But SW fans will buy any release that the studios put on the shelves, and just because someone owns the 2011 set doesn't mean they won't buy a new release.

A brand new, 4k restoration of the unreleased theatrical trilogy would be a big deal to a significant number of fans. It would also come with a very simple and easily communicated marketing message, and thus, would be a big seller.

Lightsabers, Jedi, and The Force don't have as big a role in Star Wars (1977) as they do in later films. The climax of the film is a space battle, not a lightsaber duel, and in the opening scene Vader doesn't use The Force to choke the captain.

The force doesn't have a big role in Star Wars?  Yes, the climax of the film is a space battle...  in which the hero taps into his newly learned force abilities (after being instructed by his jedi mentor, who was killed by the bad guy jedi in a lightsaber fight, and then became a force ghost) which enables him to blow up the evil space station and restore freedom to the galaxy..

But again, I'm all for a non-jedi film.  But there is still a lot that can be done with the whole jedi/force mythology.

As far as I'm concerned, the "canon" Jedi suck, so any film that doesn't feature them is as welcoming as a tall glass of cool water in a hot desert to my eyes.

Yeah, but now with Lucas out of the way, a competent director could tell an awesome jedi story that would be worthy of the mythology. Afterall, Jedi knights are essentially space samurai with laser swords, and there's absolutely nothing "sucky" about a samurai with a freakin' laser sword.  That's what I would call badass.  (Heck, now that I think of it, I wouldn't mind seeing a jedi version of "Seven Samurai").  And then, when you add in the whole temptation with the dark side thing, that really opens up a lot of opportunities for some epic storylines.

There's no reason to abandon that whole mythology simply because Lucas didn't understand his own universe and screwed everything up. The prequels were one gigantic wasted opportunity, in terms of telling the story of Anakin and the fall of the jedi.  We just need Disney/Lucasfilm to forget they ever existed and find somebody that can do it right.

That doesn't mean I wouldn't love to see a non-jedi story that takes place in the Star Wars universe.  I just still see so many opportunities for further exploration into the struggle between the light and dark side of the force.

I'm a big fan of the visuals in the teaser, but I have to say the zoom shot is so heavy handed and unnatural. It completely takes me out of the flow of that scene and disrupts my suspension of disbelief.

Agreed.  I wish JJ would ease up on that stuff.  Although, as the film is still being cut, it's possible that won't make it into the final edit.  I don't want any shaky cam during the space battles either for the same reason.  I normally am not distracted by it, but that is such a sharp contrast to what we saw in the OT, I wont be able to watch it without noticing.  I still think he is a solid director, but I'm much more confident in Rian Johnson.

If they just release the theatrical versions on blu ray, though, I'll be so happy that I won't care if TFA is the worst piece of crap in film history.

Star Wars: Episode VII to be directed by J.J. Abrams **NON SPOILER THREAD**
Time

Interesting.  So the story for the ST apparently came from inside Lucasfilm and not from Abrams/Kasdan.  Can't say I'm encouraged by this, especially since Kiri Hart hasn't written anything.  I wonder if there were differences between Arndt and the Lucas story group, and that's why he left...

...everything you could every want to know about what this flick did in 1977 ...this poster has it.

Yeah!  Scoop necklines, lotsa gams, and pecs pecs pecs 'til next Tuesday!

...oh wait, Star Wars had none of those things.

Sorry but that poster is utter crap.  The real classic was the one with Luke pointing the blaster at the viewer, surrounded by the other characters.  The one above is the square-peg-round-hole weird incongruous exploitation misstep.

Seriously?  Utter Crap?  I couldn't disagree more.  This poster by Tom Jung is one of the coolest, and most iconic movie posters in Hollywood history.  It's the perfect style for a 1970's swashbuckling, space fantasy movie.

If only they still made movie posters this good...

**RUMOR** Original theatrical cut of the OT to be released on blu ray!!
Time

There were two separate websites back in May and then August that reported independently of each other that the UOT is coming to blu-ray next fall.  (the second website - comicbook.com - stated they had verified their info with two separate sources)  Both articles stated the release will be used as a tie-in marketing campaign for EP VII.

Now fast forward a few months and it certainly sounds like there is a new OT release in some form on its way and will indeed be used, as Bog Iger's comments seem to confirm, as a major part of a tie-in marketing push for EP VII.

Put all this info together and to me it adds up to an OUT release.  A new SE release with a few exclusives would not be exciting at all, and would not offer any significant marketing message that they could use to hype the new movie.  Disney is thinking much bigger than that.

**RUMOR** Original theatrical cut of the OT to be released on blu ray!!
Time

After the rumors this summer about a release and now this quote from Iger, I have more hope than ever now that it will happen.

So next year we will have a new sequel to ROTJ starring the big three - Ford, Hamill, & Fisher?  Yeah you can bet that Disney will want to evoke a strong sense of nostalgia with their marketing next year for all those who grew up with the OT, by tying the new trilogy in with the old beloved originals that started this whole craze back in 1977.  Episode VII will be marketed as a return to the magic of the original Star Wars universe, and Disney will use every tool at their disposal to make EP VII one giant movie event spectacular.  So releasing the OOT, something that has never been released in modern format, would be a huge marketing tool to help ramp up excitement.

I know I shouldn't be getting my hopes up like this, but a limited theatrical run of the OT, coupled with a blu ray release sometime in the fall just makes too much sense to me...

Should I buy the Original Trilogy Blu ray? I already have the 2004 DVD.

I agree with Danny Boy; the Blu-ray transfers are the best way to enjoy the films at the moment. I find the audio aspect of the six films to be more impressive than the visual aspect, though, although Revenge Of The Sith is probably just as impressive to look at as it is to listen to.

Sorry, but many of us here get absolutely no enjoyment from watching the blu-rays with their ridiculous changes that GL has made over the years.  They are simply unwatchable for me and for all of my friends as well.  I am holding out hope for the originals to be released next fall before EPVII.  If that doesn't happen, I'll just stick with Harmy's versions.

Because pricey box sets never ever go on sale these days, or get broken up and sold on Ebay.

Seriously, after waiting all this time, if we finally get what we've been waiting for, we're going to complain it's too expensive to buy?

Who's complaining?  I just said there's no need to include the SE's, since they have already been released.  It's not like anything has been announced anyway.

I don't care if it includes a version with Jar Jar replacing Han Solo - as long as it includes the OUT, I will pay whatever price they ask.

They've already released the SE's on blu-ray, so all we need are the unaltered theatrical movies.  Fans who prefer the SE can just hang on to their 2011 discs and continue to enjoy the inferior versions.

A Bladerunner type set would just make it more expensive for those of us who have been waiting for years for a release of the OT.
