Star Wars: Episode VII to be directed by J.J. Abrams **NON SPOILER THREAD**
Time

May 4th Q&A with Mark Hamill.  Nice to read these quotes on his views on special effects:

"He also said since then he's only had one creative meeting with Kathleen Kennedy in which he brought up the desire to have a more balanced approach to the effects. His favorite film is the 1933 King Kong and he loves the way they used all sorts of tricks to pull off the effects and he also believes part of the longevity of the original trilogy is in those effects.

“There's nothing wrong with CGI, but I think you have to have a balance because the camera perceives the width and the depth and the weight of a miniature or a model.” He just said he isn't a fan of the one guy surrounded by greenscreen look and told Kennedy that he'd hate for these new movies to “look like Roger Rabbit.”

He read the treatments at least before jedi while working on his book, which was published in '84, i believe.  But according to a recent article, he still believes that what he read will be the basis for the new trilogy.

"Pollack calls the prequel trilogy “dreadful” but has very positive things to say about the ideas behind the potential next two trilogies, stories he confidently believes Disney will use, claiming they represent one of the reasons Disney made the acquisition.

But I don't know anything about Pollack.  He may not know what he's talking about, and those treatments could be completely obsolete now.  If anyone here knows Michael Arndt, just give him a call and get back to us.  :)

I think that he probably had treatments for these in some form or another back in the early eighties at the latest.

Mark Hamill's comments in a 1983 interview confirmed that GL was at least  considering an EP VII and had a story in mind.  And Dale Pollack wrote in his book that GL let him read the treatments for all of the sequels, including 7-12:

“It was originally a 12-part saga. The three most exciting stories were 7, 8 and 9. They had propulsive action, really interesting new worlds, new characters. I remember thinking, ‘I want to see these 3 movies."

Now whether or not these treatments are still relevant or will have any impact on EP VII is yet to be determined.

" I have story treatments of 7, 8, and 9, and a bunch of other movies and obviously we have hundreds of books and comics and everything you could possibly imagine.  So I sort of moved that treasure trove of stories and various things to Kathy, and I have complete confidence that she’s gonna take them and make great movies.”

We don't know whether or not they will actually use the treatments or not, but I imagine Kennedy would want to at least respect GL and use them as a starting point.

It wasn't just the bad dialogue though.  GL even admits that he is not an "actor's director," and that he is really more of an editor, and anyone that's ever been  on a movie set has seen just how much influence a director has on the actor's overall performance.

All of the characters in the PT came across as wooden and lifeless, and we all know those respective actors are perfectly capable of strong performances.  Having good dialogue would have helped, but without a competent director at the helm, the resulting performances still would have been much the same.

But yeah, that dialogue is horrible, lol...

"I don't like sand. It's coarse and rough and irritating, and it gets everywhere. Not like here. Here everything's soft... and smooth…"

I have a question that probably has been asked before, but I'm unsure how to search 344 pages to find it.

Basically, I've been collecting Star Wars digital material for decades now and while I have not watched each version, can someone who has watched the major ones tell me if I'm right?

Question is, the fan made version which most comes close to the theatrical OT. The top 3 I think are:

OCP Classic Edition

This Harmy Despecialized Edition

Adywan Revisited Edition

My gut is telling me Harmy's should be the closest? If I am remembering right, OCP's is a DVD/LD mashup which is very close but no other updates plus resolution issues. Adywan's, while very good resolution, color correction, etc.....contains a lot of personal additions/upgrades that never existed.

This one though, seems to just be great resolution, purist content with slight updates like color correction.

Am I right or am I really off the mark and need to do a lot more research? :) Thanks.

Yes, and just to clarify - even Harmy's color corrections were done with the intent of preserving the original theatrical appearance.  He had access to original 1977 color references, which he used to re-time the blu-ray.

Two more projects to check out:

- Dark Jedi & You_Too's Blu V2.  http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Star-Wars-OT-1997-Special-Edition-Blu-rays-Info-by-Team-Blu/topic/10550/

It is sourced from the official 2006 theatrical dvds, and have been color-corrected and upscaled.  The quality is phenomenal, considering the source.  They will be finished sometime this year, I believe.

- Team Negative 1 - 35mm preservation  http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/team-negative1-star-wars-1977-35mm-theatrical-version-release-details-and-updates/topic/14590/

Star Wars might be done this year, with Empire to follow.

I don't think that was a finished product he's actually using. He did say it was "just for fun."

Ah! Very well. Yeah, I would think if it's Star Wars you'd have a more serious title menu.

It's not the title menu, it's for the extras, and do you really not understand the significance of the animation there?

Also, Harmy did post an early version of the actual menu design and it was pretty freakin sweet.

The GOUT transfer is generally pink-shifted, desaturated, and overly bright compared to the better color references Harmy used.

It's not the GOUT I'm talking about, but my memories about the theatrical version. Are my _memories_ wrong? I just mentioned GOUT because that's a well-known old print which happen to show those things in neutral gray (which could be wrong).

The death star interiors were never neutral grey, but had a green/blue tint.  Harmy's color reference is from an original unfaded technicolor print.  The GOUT on the other hand is sourced from a faded interpositive, and is thus very desaturated from its original appearance.  Check out Dark Jedi/You_Too's project.  They have color-corrected the GOUT and were able to bring out a lot the colors which were not visible on the official disc.

^exactly how I felt.

Harmy, I just watched 2.1 and it really took me back to when I was a kid.  This is my favorite movie, but I haven't watched it in many years, because I've been frustrated by the lack of a good quality version, and the special edition is simply unwatchable for me.

My daughter is now almost old enough to watch it, and this will be the version I'll show her.  Thank you.

And so Han Solo still has his purple pants at the end? I thought Verta pretty well corrected that, and showed how he did it, no?

I don't know where Mike "fixed" that and what it has to do with this version but, no, he doesn't - he has navy blue pants, actually quite a bit less purple than on the IB print, now that I'm looking at it.

Harmy, I think he's referring to the video that Mike posted on his forum where he color-corrected that shot from the blu-ray.

Hi Harmy,

I just watched 2.0 again tonight and found a possible error. At 31:21 there is a sudden color shift, most noticeable on Ben's cloak (shifts to a darker shade of brown).  Figured I better mention it in case no one else has, and perhaps could be corrected in 2.1.

Yes, he completely recolor-timed that scene.  He posted a link to it 2 or 3 months ago.

At least the SE is blatantly a different version that all but the most ignorant know is a revision. Meanwhile, other movies are getting wires and reflections erased and getting passed off as the original version.

Not if you talk to the younger fans who grew up with the SE's and have never seen the OT.  Some of them only know of the originals as being basically  "rough cuts" with "missing scenes".  And yes I have actually seen that exact quote recently on a message board.
