Info: Hips' titles - La Costa Nostra - The Complete Godfather Epic: 1901-1980

One of the more easy trilogies to edit together into a single film would be Back to the Future - and could look ok on a dual layer disc if encoded with a high number of variable bitrate passes, although you might do better to use the NTSC DVDs because I have a suspicion they did not so good audio pitch correction on the PAL DVDs...

Thanks, you can see why I spent so much time doing the 5 times capture & merge method to get the cleanest capture possible with the hardware I have, I got the idea from reading up about the X0 player, how it has 5 NTSC processors and merges the output to reduce RF inteference.

Now, I am trying to create an ISO of the DL disk but it fails everytime. DVDdecriptor can not make an ISO or anything else from this disc.

My burner can't successfully do dual layers as I found out much to my annoyance (and wallet), what I sent you was the best burn out of 6 discs and even that failed on verify after burning with DVDDecrypter
Any ideas?

Ask segaflip for a copy of two discs containing the NTSC dual layer ISO I sent him? they'll get there much quicker than if I send you them.

About 1h 10m:
PAL ANH layer change occurs at the beginning of the scene where the guard in the holding cells says "Where are you taking this...thing"
NTSC ANH layer change occurs at the beginning of the scene where the guard in the holding cells says "I wasn't notified, I'll have to clear it"

I'll update my info/feedback thread with that info.

Info Wanted: an Original Trilogy preservation project with French audio?
Time

I was thinking about re-authoring my trilogy when it's finished, just the PAL single layer versions, removing my upmixed 5.1 448kbps track and replacing it with the French 2.0 at 224kbps & German 2.0 audio at 224kbps, the menus/title text/intro scrolling text/alien subtitles would still be in English but it would have 3 different language tracks and the video wouldn't have to be re-encoded to accomodate the new audio tracks.
I haven't checked but I get the feeling that the French & German audio have had pitch correction applied to them which would make the music/sound effects on the English track sound a bit higher in pitch because it comes from the Definitive Collection and hasn't had pitch correction applied.

Moth3r, drop me a line with your address and I'll post you the NTSC single layer ANH (and PAL if you want, but you probably wouldn't like the audio pitch increase ), it's probably best you do the capping/resizing to keep things consistant, I don't think you'd see any real difference between single & dual versions if you're compressing the still to jpeg.

Blade Runner Covers
Time
You've.....never.....seen.....Blade.....Runner.....? my god man, get hold of it ASAP!

There are two main flavours, the DC (1992 directors cut) and OV (1982 original theatrical version) with a few differences between them, but both equally good IMHO. The OV has a couple of extra violence scenes, a voiceover by Deckard (Harrison Ford) and a sappy ending whilst the DC does away with those leaving you with an amazing film, especially with the Vangelis soundtrack he created just for the film.
The DC is on official DVD (out of print in the UK) but was one of the first films put to DVD and the picture quality isn't so great, whilst OV has only been released on VHS/laserdisc - hence the various DVD transfers of the LD.

Those covers look great, when I've finished my SW trilogy transfer I'm going to transfer the 15gb HD DD5.1 BR DC capture to PAL & NTSC DVD because the small 30 min test disc I did looks stunning, it makes the official DD2.0 BR DC DVDs look like VHS transfers! and with the high quality 1920x1080 res of the HD capture it means I have some good source material for making a custom cover

segaflip, in the post to you right now are a 4 flavours of ANH; NTSC dual layer ISO on 2 discs, NTSC single layer, PAL dual layer ISO on 2 discs, PAL single layer. The NTSC dual layer ISO was posted last Friday with a failed dual layer burn so you can see the quality (playback sutters at the beginning of the 2nd layer), the others 3 were sent today.

*clears off finished ANH material from harddrives to begin work on ESB*

When I've completed the trilogy I will probably ask help for getting a PAL dual layer set of my own, I burnt a PAL dual layer ANH disc last night and predictably it failed verify when it got to the 2nd layer, the resulting burn in my DVD player stuttered a bit when it got a few mins into playing the 2nd layer but not during the layer change. I have 3 blank dual layer discs left and won't try burning them on my Pioneer 108 as they'll just fail again.

dark_jedi, I haven't done ESB or ROTJ yet, about to start on ESB very soon as I've now completed all the versions of ANH.

Keep an eye on this thread: ***Citizen's NTSC DVD/PAL DVD/XviD Info and Feedback Thread*** as I update it as things are finished.

My burner doesn't like burning dual-layer discs and haven't had a successful burn yet (hence my making the single layer ones so I can watch them), to get the dual layer version out I've rar'd up ISO onto two discs for whoever receives them to roll-their-own copy. See my sig and drop me a line about aquisitions.

Thanks for the report I knew you'd be able to tell the difference between the dual layer and single layer versions on your big screen setup for the fact that the mpeg2 video on the single layer version is 3.46gb whilst on the dual layer version it's 5.98gb. Did you find the two 'hidden' buttons in the menus of the dual layer version? don't tell where they are yet before others have had the chance to find them because you're the first to get an NTSC copy.

I've just this evening finished the dual layer PAL version of ANH and will be posting a copy out to segaflip tomorrow, menu/chapter/video/content wise it's pratically identical to the NTSC version.

But there's a small dilemma, do I send him the single layer PAL & NTSC versions of ANH too? I did them because it was very easy to do and copying them is quick, cheap and easy unlike dual layer discs that take and age to burn and cost a bomb (and can really make you swear when they coaster), it'll be a total of 72gb for the single layer & dual layer of the PAL & NTSC trilogy.

DarkGruson should be receiving his copy of my dual layer NTSC ANH any time now so hopefully some feedback from him
I've posted segaflip a copy too so if all goes well it'll appear on a.b.starwars in just over a week's time.

Been quite busy this week so SW has taken a small breather, this weekend I'm going to set to and complete dual layer PAL ANH, everything's encoded just need to author. Then once I'm satisfied with the PAL disc I set to on ESB transfer next week, with 14 hours of digitising involved...

The Official Dark/Sega Special Collection OT LD Release Thread (Not an SE Transfer) (Released)

COR!!!

This trilogy has to be one of the best NTSC sourced transfers I've seen to date, despite some issues with the hue, colour bleeding & compression artefacts, the image clarity and brightness/contrast is very good, what's more this has to be the first laserdisc transfer that doesn't exhibit any of the temporal smoothing that plagues all the other widescreen SW laserdiscs (French, German, Definitive, Faces) I've seen. Nor does it appear to have the interlacing jaggies problem the Definitive and Faces collectiion has where some detail is completely lost through removal of lines.

What do I mean?

No temporal smoothing, the Cantina, look at the edge of the right creature's head:

Cropped German THX PAL capture (only colour/brightness adjusted):

Cropped Dark/Sega Special Collection DVD still:

No serious jaggies problem like the Definitive/Faces set, the war room:

Cropped Definitive Collection capture:

Cropped Dark/Sega Special Collection DVD still:

I'd love to get my hands on the laserdiscs used for this Dark/Sega set one day, this is the video they should have put on the Definitive Collection!

Things are (as usual) taking a bit longer than I thought, just started encoding the PAL mpeg video today, so another couple of days, once finished I'll send the PAL & NTSC dual layer versions to segaflip, rar'd onto single layer discs for reliability.

I've been watching the NTSC version too much the past couple of weeks and now I'm watching the quick PAL version I did a while ago with the audio pitch increase it's like everyone's on helium, argh I got used to the original pitch! but I really couldn't get used to the 3:2 pulldown, now that is horrible, nothing like watching a space fight where none of the ships are moving with any smoothness...

I've now created a no-extras single layer NTSC ANH, audio/menus are exactly the same as the dual layer except video is 7-pass 4100kbps avg instead of 4-pass 7100kbps avg, I'm not seeing any significant picture quality drop of the single layer compared to the dual layer on my 28" widescreen tv, but I'm sending both discs to DarkGruson so he can see the two versions on his big rig.

Now I have the drive space I'm encoding the PAL version of ANH, should be cleaned/encoded/authored by Monday, dunno about burned though

Help: looking for... 'From Beyond' - available on laserdisc or preservation project?
Time
I got the VHS of it, one of the better horror movies to come out of the 80s I thought, it is available on laserdisc if you can find it. Wouldn't mind getting a better quality version on DVD or the laserdisc.

Always best to take a look at LDDB.com if you want to find out if a particular title is on laserdisc, IMDB isn't so up to date.

segaflip, I'll put the dual layer image across a couple of single layer discs and post them to you, I don't know when because I can't get out to the post office (I hate being ill like this, can't do squat ), which also means I can list stuff on eBay & post the items to make some money to pay for new discs.

s7en, I ruled out Nero for this task because as far as I can tell, you can't set where the layer change happens which is very important.

I've started encoding the film at 4100kbps 7 pass and going to make a single layer ANH disc tomorrow when the encoding has finished, then going to test it against the dual layer burn that almost works, if I can't see any real quality improvement by using dual layer instead of single layer I'm going to go single layer because it's significantly cheaper and easier to work with.
