.: Citizen's NTSC DVD / PAL DVD / XviD project :. (Released)
Time
The only reason at the moment is that my soundcard & playback software isn't setup to stream out ac3 in avis to my amp, meaning if I were to make an avi with 5.1 from 2.0 source it would follow this line:
2.0 source upmixed to Pro-LogicII 5.1 AC3 during creation, playing the avi back the software would downmix the 5.1 to 2.0, then output that to my amp where it would upmix again to Pro-LogicII 5.1, instead of just sending the unprocessed 2.0 audio to the amp where it would upmix to Pro-LogicII 5.1.

If I can get my soundcard & playback software to stream ac3 to my amp I may go with the ac3 option for the XviD, otherwise I'll stick to mp3 (256kbps as that's the highest bitrate my VirtualDub can encode to)

edit: well the rough audio sync on the 4.5gb XviD file of ANH is done, time to fire up the projector and have a watch

Yup, I'll be producing 3 different sets:

XviD trilogy, 1024x446 resolution, 23.976fps, not decided on what audio format yet, leaning towards 320kbps mp3 or PCM, no extras, each film will fill a full single layer DVD-R, the drawback of 4.3gb avis is that W95/W98 users won't be able to view the avis, unless I do a version with the films split up into <2gb avis. You won't need a fast machine to play them though, this 900mhz Duron PC has no problems playing XviD files of that resolution.

PAL trilogy, anamorphic widescreen, PCM audio/5.1 DD AC3/2.0 commentary, all the extras off the definitive collection, the discs will be dual-layer in order to accomodate the 3 audio tracks and extras.

NTSC trilogy, exactly the same specs as the PAL except in NTSC format.

Only using Dr_Gonzo's audio for testing because I haven't captured the audio off my own definitive LDs yet, got to drag the player round to my friends place to capture it at 96khz on his decent PC audio kit.

The DVD thing, well the XviD version is just 1/3 of the set, I'm going to be doing PAL and NTSC DVDs too I thought that I've spent so much time & money on this project so far I might as well go the whole hog and produce a trilogy of formats of the trilogy (pun intended) because I know there are some people who would prefer the NTSC version despite living in PAL land because of the 4% audio pitch difference.

Help: looking for... 'Ewoks' animated complete Series DVD?
Time
I have all the original Ewoks cartoon VHSs and the official DVD, but the VHSs are in PAL format and as such were converted from NTSC so you'd best be looking at someone who has the NTSC tapes. I also have the Droids DVD and several of the Droids VHSs (I think I'm missing 1 tape) but again they're in PAL format and it was created in NTSC.

1. Keeping audio sync is not a problem, just a little time consuming as I have to load up two VirtualDub's, one with the source audio+video and the other with the destination video, then check every few thousand frames that the frames of the two VirtualDub's are aligned and add/remove frames from the source as necessary then save the wav which will then fit perfectly to the destination video.
A process I've done before for putting audio from VHS to the video of a DVD (the '89 film The Wizard) and the CGI cartoon ReBoot (I have 9 high quality Russian DVDs that are dubbed in Russian so synched the video to the VHS audio I have)

2. DVDShrink can't deal with XviD avis, I knew the first encode wouldn't be on-the-mark as I had to give a rough guess at what quality setting to encode it to, the next encode should be very close to the mark but I can't decide what audio to put with the XviD (AC3,PCM or the standard mp3)

I did a 30 min PAL DVD test and it's looking amazing, you start noticing more of the details in the film such as Darth's helmet isn't very shiny when you first see him but I can't do a full DVD yet until I free up more space or get a bigger harddrive, I could do with replacing the two 120gb's with 250gb's.

After 34 hours of processing I finally have my first full film in 1024x446 res XviD format, looks amazing but has a couple of drawbacks; the file is 4.5gb so won't fit on a DVD-R and there's no audio... going to borrow the audio from Dr_Gonzo's ANH so I can watch the film with audio and then set the computer to re-code the video at a size that will fit on a DVD-R (another 34 hours processing...)

The starfield thing was one of those 2am ideas that we weren't sure would fly, and it was immensely satisfying when the stars popped back into existence after the first code run!

Very much look forward to receiving any code you're willing to share, I'm curious to see what the starfield cleanup code does to the PAL LD footage and how it copes when they're moving instead of (supposed to be) static.

The 2am ideas thing, yeah I know about that one, I think it was a late night years ago when I was trying to code autosterograms from scratch (nobody would share their code online) that I figured out that one line of code that did the trick to making my own 'magic eye' pictures.

Nevermind on the newsletter request, my proper one turned up.

Amazing work on the stars! are you willing to share the AviSynth scripts? also on an inverse related note, does anyone have any scripts/filters that can remove 'stars'? A few of my laserdiscs have rotted and they're extremely difficult to find replacements of, I had a go at filtering out the rot dots/dashes but couldn't do very well:

This is from my LD conversion:

http://www.haku.co.uk/pics/BladeRunnerEye.jpg

Yeah it's dark but so's the film! I didn't alter the brightness/colour levels when doing the transfer, it looks much better on a proper tv than viewing on a monitor, the picture's a bit grainy but preferred that over one that looks slightly out-of-focus and blurry, however that's only the mk.2 I did 9 months ago and when I've finished my SW discs I'll be doing mk.3 that'll look even better (I learnt some new tricks )

I got some more DVD-Rs so anyone who's contacted me about this, drop me another line!

Yup, only the DC version of BR has so far been released on DVD and the R2 version has been deleted for sometime now meaning you can only get the R1 brand new, it's eBay if you want the R2 release which has a notable higher picture quality than the R1 (more than just the 20% increased resolution between PAL/NTSC, the R1 just doesn't stand up to the R2). I got £50 for selling 2 original R2 DC BR DVDs on eBay earlier this year (still have an original though)

The Stormtroopers in the forest, I meant ROTJ not ESB (was tired when I started this thread)

In the past I never really paid much attention to the detail in the films - they were just entertainment, until he started mucking about with them and adding that god-awful CGI etc. and then they stopped playing the original trilogy on tv I started noticing things, but as with most films I don't start noticing the minor details until I convert them onto DVD.

Working on making a DVD of the trilogy means you usually watch pieces of footage many times to make sure your cleanup filters aren't destroying the picture quality etc., this leads to seeing bits & pieces you never noticed before, so far I've noticed:

ANH: Stormtroopers - when they're running through the forest to get C-3PO & R2-D2 they're all looking down at the ground because the helmets have limited vision, you could out run them easily in a forest
ANH: Greedo - for a single frame, just before he's shot by Han, you see a really bad mock-up that's so obviously not got a person inside the suit
ANH: Luke's parents - holy crap I just noticed this for the first time after seeing the film so many times, when Luke gets back to his home after the empire have destroyed it, you see two smoking skeletons outside on the ground!

What things has anyone else noticed during watching the same piece/film after many time?

That is correct. The reasons I created this 5.1 track were 1) to see if I could do it , and 2) my receiver doesn't have Pro-Logic II, so I figured I'd recreate the ProLogic decoding in software, and then save it as an AC3, which my receiver could decode (plus it makes the file smaller as well.) I, and many others, were pleased with the result.

I thought how the amp decodes the incoming stereo signal (DD 2.0, PCM, analogue) depends on the amp itself, my Yamaha A/V receiver can take a 2.0 signal (analogue or digital) and output it through Pro-Logic, Pro-Logic II or any number of the DSP effects.

PAL films are generally stored progressive but at 25fps instead of 24fps (no framerate conversion, just plays back faster) with the audio sped up to match the faster playback rate.

Although saying that a fair amount of films on PAL DVD are flagged as interlaced (!) despite them having progressive footage. But not all films on PAL DVD just play back 4.096% faster, my R4 Spirited Away DVD has been framerate converted from 24fps to 25fps, the end result is a sub-standard interlaced picture that doesn't look too good, especially on a PC screen.
