Hopefully in about a week I'll have a single-layer NTSC version of my ANH completed but I don't have a fast enough connection to torrent seed or binary post so will need some help.

Uhh pass, never really keep track of the temp numbers when it gets hot, cursing at the heat and vegatating in front of the tv is how I cope It's cooled down a lot the past few days (raining right now) so I'm starting to be able to think straight and have gotten stuck back into my trilogy.

I've cleared enough off my drives to do ANH PAL DVD, 2.5 hours ago I set my computer to filter the captured footage into a huffy avi (estimated size 35gb) to then mpeg2 encode, just have to wait 30+ hours for the process to complete...

So far I think my ANH test DVD is as good, if not better than Moth3r's ANH. Because I'm not using any temporal smoothing/filtering, the noise/grain in the picture remains fairly constant but also lower than Moth3r's because of the 5x sampling, tried to use as little smoothing as possible because too much removal starts destroying the picture detail.

DVD Covers (Eps. I,II,III, V & VI)

Because my to-be transfer of the OT will have a more 'natural' film like look rather than an over-sharpened image I thought I'd go for something unique with the covers, I just whipped this test image up in about 5 mins:

Anyone know what kind of trees are in the Endor forest? would be neat to get a high res photo of the bark of one of those to use for the covers, you know, for 'authenticity'

A couple of things have pressed the pause button on my project, firstly the weather, I hate this hot weather because it wipes me out and everything just seems like too much effort (I'd really not cope if I lived in a hot climate), and more importantly I need to scrape up about £150 for a couple of replacement harddrives, the two 120gb's I have just aren't enough and need to replace them with two 250gb's or higher.

As a test I did however re-encode the 4.7gb XviD avi down to a PAL DVD and even though it's from an XviD it still looks great, took it round to a friend's house to see what it was like on his 42" plasma and I'm very happy with the results, another friend who was there commented on how it looked more film-like natural as opposed to the sharpness of a 'proper' DVD which was great to hear because that's what I've been aiming for all along.

Good call on the fixes classification list.

The PAL THX LDs (both German & French) have burn marks in the first scene you see the droids in ANH:

http://www.haku.co.uk/pics/StarWarsBurnMark1.jpg http://www.haku.co.uk/pics/StarWarsBurnMark2.jpg

I haven't investigated removing marks such as these because if I start I'll either give up fairly quickly because I'd be searching through the films frame-by-frame, or I'd get so stuck into it that I'd go through and fix any blemish I could find and it would take me a year on each film

What about the square matts round the ships during dogfight scenes, can those be erased?

One scene where bad matting stood out on ANH is this, one of the good guys biting the dust in the trench:

Another matting glitch I've noticed in ROTJ is when the rebel scum are captured and taken outside the shield's power building, there's a walker in the background in the trees and it's a nice shade of green.

Info & Help: looking for... other ld-rips to dvd movies ex. blade runner int cut, songs of the south, frighteners dir cut - and much much more...

Take your pick, both are 4:3 ('fullscreen' is such a misused description because if you have a widescreen tv then 16:9 is your 'fullscreen') because that's probably what the source is.

NTSC region 1 DVD: http://www.dvdpacific.com/item.asp?ID=76709
PAL region 4 DVD: http://www.devoteddvd.com.au/shop/product_info.php?products_id=681

A lot of films are shot on 4:3 footage and then cropped to 16:9, which is why companies (MGM in particular) release DVDs with 4:3 on one side of the disc and 16:9 on the other, the 16:9 is the theatrically correct aspect ratio but the 4:3 shows more picture.
I just got the region 1 DVD of Freaked aka Hideos Mutant Freekz and it's been cropped from 4:3, my German 4:3 release shows more picture, further more they (Anchor Bay) royally stuffed up the R1 release by burning in the 3:2 pulldown, it looks terrible on a PC!

3:2 on laserdisc question

Let's google.

I'm thinking along the lines of a real-world test, putting a PAL film disc in my portable DVD player and switching the output to NTSC, capturing the output on my PC and seeing if fields are repeated or blurred to turn 25p into 29.97i.

My portable DVD player has a switch on the back saying "PAL* *NTSC" so I can output any DVD as PAL or NTSC without having to go into the player's settings and restart the disc like my standalone player, it doesn't slowdown or speedup films but does do on-the-fly framerate conversion which is pretty good (I've seen terrible results on some expensive non-budget players).

PAL speed. The only 'DVD player' I know of that can play PAL DVDs at true speed is the latest WinDVD, it has an option called "PAL truspeed", using this means you have the added benefit of the higher PAL resolution coupled with the correct playback speed.

I don't think it'll work because you can't have a file larger than 4gb on a FAT32 partition.

I don't run any virus checkers/blockers on a permanent basis on this W98 machine and I've only been hit rogue programs 3 times in the past 4 years (I'm very careful what sites I visit, what links I click and what files I run), never lost any data to them just a few hours restoring the Windows directory from a backup & running anti-spyware programs.

Yes, CoolEdit was the first program I tried to do timestretching whilst preserving pitch, from what I can tell it does it by breaking up the audio into small pieces and overlaps them, certain notes 'warble' due to the frequency of the overlapping pieces. It's not something you immediately notice but once you do the music is ruined, my first try doing pitch preservation was on a Blade Runner LD rip, ruining Vangelis' music in this way is a no no in my books.

My PAL transfer set will use the audio from the Definitive LD's, putting PCM audio & a Pro-LogicII 5.1 upmix tracks on the DVDs.

I tried checking the audio between the definitive LD's and Moth3r's ESB at the same time, apart from the playbacks speed I can't tell the difference between the two, going to have to try getting a sample of each and bunging them into an audio editer on my PC to do a better test.
I've looked into timestretching the audio for PAL DVD but none of the programs I tried could do it with any competance, speech sounded fine but certain notes in orchestral type music didn't sound right which would ruin some of the SW music.
