Info & Ideas: ESB and ROTJ Wishlist
Time

I think the biggest problem with this movie is the battle of Endor. The ground portion of it, anyway. IMO, it simply looks childish the way the Ewoks are taking out the storm troopers. They hit them with sticks and punches them, yet it is plainly obvious that their blows aren't forceful at all. It looks almost like their poking them. The battle is played for laughts, which it shouldn't be. The battles of Hoth and Yavin were serious without cartoony humour.

Those who defend the battle usually say that the ewoks were loosing, that it was only Chewie stealing the scout walker that changed the course and brought the battle arround. Fair enough, but the movie does not convey this fact. Before that point, the movie shows plenty of ewoks ambushing storm troopers, but only a measly 1 ewok gets killed. Compare that to the novel, where the ewoks are almost slaughtered, but their great strenght in numbers assures that they keep on coming.

I'm not sure if and how Ady would do it, but ROTJ would benefit greatly from cutting the silliest, most unconvincing parts, and somehow add many more ewok causulties. Not that we need to linger on them, like with Corpsey (yes, that's his name apparantly), but just show it in passing. How that would be done is another matter though.

It's hard to know for sure how Lucas intended this. Did he mean for Vader to play dumb, or did he just plain forget about Vader's earlier line about Skywalker? I'm gonna give the man the benefit of a doubt, though, and say he intended for Vader to play dumb. Adywan's edit will put this to rest though.

I think there exists an old comic from way back in the day depicting how Vader got Luke's name froma  captured rebel pilot a few months after the Death Star was destroyed.  Hence his "obsession" to track down Luke, which is described in the ESB opening crawl.

My bad. The section (on page 1) is titled "Some changes that are planned so far for this edit". The rank thing is on it, though accompanied by a comment about not being too bothered with it. Considering your comments, I guess it belong more properally under "things I won't be doing". Which is a shame, it being an error in the movie. Anyway, I'll stop whining now (since it's your edit, not mine) and settle with saying that you would make this one fan happy if you did it.

Btw, I love the new screen shots on page one. The one of Luke and his hand in particular. That's another thing that has bugged me. Great work, ady!

TESB is unique in that all the imperial officers are wearing perfect rank badges and cylinders. For one who is into these things, its very easy to determine the ranks of for instance Piett, Ozzel or Veers by mearly looking at their rank badges. By comparison ANH's rank system is terribly vague, with officers wearing a confusing mixture of red, blue and yellow. And let's not even talk about the mess in ROTJ, were virtually everyone seems to have the same rank!

There is one officer that is wrong, though, and it seems like a shame when everyone else are perfect. He appears briefly as an extra without lines in Vader's first scene. As Ozzel and Piett are argueing and Vader is making his way over to join them, the camera pans down to the trench and an officer standing looking up at Vader. He is wearing the rank insignia of a navy captain, even though Piett is captain of the ship at that time. However, if another cylinder is added to his other cheast pocket, he becomes a commander instead, which would clear it all up.

I have mentioned this earlier some time ago, so forgive me ady if you've already addressed this, but I wanted to make sure it hadn't been forgotten in the ocean of posts here.

i won't be doing anything to the rank pins in ESB:R. this type of thing has never bothered me

But you do have it under "things I will be doing". Don't take this the wrong way, but I thought you wanted to address errors. This is an error, however minor. Just like wires up peoples sleves and such. I know it doesn't bother you, but it has always bothered me every time I se that shot since I'm into these kind of things. Since I knew Lucas would likely never notice let alone correct it, I guess I was hoping that an extra cylinder (not the badge itself, that's already correct) on one single guy for a 2 second shot would be possible for you to do. It's your edit and your choice, just know that I would really appriciate it if you reconsidered.

Anyway, I'm really liking how this project is coming along and the discussions here are interesting. I'm glad to be back. I do feel some things, like a the ladder, should be left like it is though. I always assumed Luke brought it with him so that he would be able to get in and out of the ship (since I don't think he knew how to levitate with the Force yet when he came to Dagobah). I guess it folds in after he gets into the ship, unless I'm missing something?

I agree to that actually, did like the new corridor someone made. The idea that Vader had a little secuded section to himself. maybe i could suggest something Adywan, delete the officers in the original footage and darken the corridor. This way it would feel like a dark dim corner of the ship he resides in but keep the original position of the chamber.

I agree.

I lean closer towards what ImperialFighter suggested when it comes to the hallway idea. The image is nice, but I think it comes across as a bit too isolated. It is something that feels better suited for the Emperor rather than Vader IMO. I feel it's important to remember that often less is more. Since this isn't really a technical error in the strictest sense of the world, I feel any change should be as minimal as possible.

So I'm in favor of just deleting the three imperials outside and keeping the background the same (or perhaps a minor adjustment). By doing so it will look as if Piett had to go through two doors to reach Vader's room, thus giving it a little extra privacy without being too far away from the action.

On second thought, perhaps it would be enough to just delete the 3 officers and keep the background intact? There is another door seen behind Piett, and without those people standing there, it would look like Piett had to go through that too in order to reach Vader's room.

Hey, I'm in the credits! That's awesome, ady. I'm flattered. I felt down and it actually cheered me up a bit. Thanks, man.

... heh, I must sound terribly slow for not noticing until now. Sorry for the OT, now back to your regularily scheduled debate :)

Btw, I like the idea of a hallway, just so long as it isn't too big. Vader needs quick access to the bridge. Also make sure that any change matches the other scenes of people entering the room. Like Veers in the beginning and later when Vader walks in there to talk to the Emperor.

Hi, guys! I haven't posted in a long time, but I have been lurking for some time now, and felt it was time to come out of the shadows again, so to speak.

Firstly: great work ady! The improved Ion canon shot really blew me away, and I just love the color correction. Your attention to detail and hard work are truly remarkable. When comparing to the official dvs, you realize how horrible the blue tint was. I can't believe they got away with that!

Ady, I would love swedish subtitles on this edition. I know that it's way too soon to think of that, but I just wanted to throw the thought out there and say that I am willing to offer my services and help you out by translating the movie into swedish for you, if you choose to go with that.

Maybe Ady could enhance the nature of the electrical disruption, but I don't think it's really needed.

I think that sounds like it could be a good enhancemeant. Now with Lucas you'd know that he would go overboard, but I have faith in ady to pull off something a bit more moderate should he decide to do this. I'm all for it, at least.

That line about Luke sort of bothers me too sometimes, but I rationalized as meaning that Luke led the efforts to find a new base (perhaps using his rogue squadron), not that he was in charge of thw whole base. It's obvious from the film itself that General Rieekan is the military officer in charge, with Leia as the highest of the political branch.

Of course it would be possible to change the scroll to "a group of freedom fighters, guided by Luke Skywalker..." But I'm not sure if it should be done.

doh! I encountered another problem. Since its actually my sister's computer that has the burner, I tried to put the revisited.iso file onto a usb-drive but it just won't work. It keeps claiming that the disk is full even though I've checked the numbers and there should be almost half the space left. That should be plenty of room, so I'm a bit lost on this one. Does anyone know what the problem might be?

Hi Guys! I've been following ady's progress over in the episode V thread, but have been lurking for some time now. It seems to be coming along nicely. Especially the color correction is impressive work on ady's behalf. The trailer material seen so far has been stunning. I feel like a kid again reading these threads!

Now to my ANH:RE related questions. I have recently downloaded all files to the Purist Edit. I know that I have a computer with a dvd burner available, but that is pretty much where my rather limited knowledge ends.

Will I need some sort of program to burn it? When buying dvds to burn the movie to, should I just ask for a dvd-5 package or is there other technical terms I should know? And is there any difference between burning a pal dvd or a ntsc dvd? They don't require different burners do they?

I know these questions seem a bit much (understatement, har har), but I really wanna get it right, and would really appriciate all help I can get.
