I'd really love to convert this DVD into PAL ... is there any way you could upload the MPEG file you had created before making it a DVD? I guess that would make things much easier ...

Why?  Converting it would lower the quality, so you wouldn't gain anything by having higher PAL resolution, and NTSC will play on European equipment without problems.

Furthermore, uploading the original mpg is unnecessary.   You can obtain that by using pgcdemux to pull out a single mpg, which wouldn't be any different from the original.

Brilliant!

Actually I was (very very jokingly of course) insinuating that our usually-lightning-fast friend TV's Frink was today displaying an uncharacteristic resemblance to the beetle-browed australopithecine on the left...

He wasn't like that yesterday!

Info Wanted: 'Magnificent Ambersons' - Criterion LDrip - has anyone done this?
Time

So do the DVDs have a particularly bad transfer, or is it just people that people want the extras?  A good HD source would be best.

edit - Well, going by this, it seems that the transfers are pretty shoddy.  They are more or less OAR though.

The link doesn't review the region 1 release, though I don't suppose it's any better.

If G-Force's script is the same as dark_Jedi's DVD releases, and unless I am mistaken I believe it is, then I would have to seriously object.

 I've read that thread, and I realize that dark_jedi's version is based off the script as it was like 6 months ago, but I can only judge based on what's available to me. There are no comparison caps posted, and I'm not going to download the same DVD three times when I wasn't very impressed with the first version (it was actually a later version of DJ's encode).

You have a strange definition of the same.  If you did realize that G-Force's script was in fact based off the script, then why use a conditional in the earlier quotation?   Why isn't it available to you?  It's in the same place that everything else is, and it seems to me perfectly clear that downloading successive improved versions of an encoding doesn't amount to downloading the same DVD three times.

EditDroid's version isn't bad: it's a substantial improvement on the GOUT; I just think G-Force's version, which undeniably has its own problems, looks better overall.    Nonetheless, if there were to be a second version of EditDroid's release, I would download it and give it a try, regardless of the fact that I wasn't greatly impressed with the first version.

MKV to AVCHD in TS Muxer?
Time

It depends on the MKV.  Most are encoded with the borders cropped and many are encoded with too many reference frames.  As a result, if you make an AVCHD straight from most MKVs, it won't play in your blu-ray player or PS3.

To make a viable AVCHD you need:

  1. a resolution of 1920x1080 or 1280x720;
  2. four reference frames or fewer for 1080p;
  3. six reference frames or fewer for 720p;
  4. AC-3 or lpcm audio - though DTS seems to work with my player;
  5. to use profile 4.1 - though 5.1 now seems to work on the PS3.

Most of the time, you will need to transcode.  This can be done with multiAVCHD or uncropMKV, both by a developer called Dean.  The former has many options, but the latter is simple, so I tend to use that.

I recommend one-pass turbo as the setting, as the slower/multi-pass settings take many days and you can't usually tell the difference.  I also recommend that you don't exceed four B-frames or the encoding will be very slow: I use three.

I hope this helps!

The Empire Strikes Back "1980 Theatrical version" Reconstruction - Adywan (Released)

To those who ask for ANH and RotJ companions:

 You ask the impossible, unfortunately.

What about the removal of the Ronto in ANH:R? Didn't that call for the same degree of skill that the rest of it requires, or is there a fundamental difference?  (I'm just curious.)

You might be right, of course.  I think people ask this of Adywan only because they are desperate to see the others in the same quality and believe only he has the skill to do it, so these requests add to the burden on the poor fellow's shoulders.

Personally, I am happy with G-Force's version of Star Wars, and only await ROTJ to give me versions of the theatricals I can live with - for ever, if need be.

About the DVD-9, TV's Frink was right that Adywan said it was possible, but did not commit to it.  I actually think a 480p AVCHD on a DVD-5 would be even better.  An encoding to h.264 would look much better than one to MPEG-2, and it would be quite easy to export the project again.  I wonder if Adywan would consider this.

DJ's currently released version uses quite an early version of G-Force's script that he has since developed.  He is planning to implement G-Force's new scripts for the other films as they become available.  You should read the GOUT image stabilization thread.   Given the relatively high degree of interest that G-Force's release generated, and the fact that you seem interested in theatrical reconstructions, I'm pretty incredulous that you think that G-Force's release is just the same as DJ's old release.  `

I think this DVD is a nice addition to the line of GOUT based custom DVDs but the G-Force-enhanced version looks better. Also, the levels settings in G-Force's script retain the proper amount of shadow detail without hurting anywhere IMO (and it's also just one setting for the entire movie :)  ).

That's a good detailed report, csd79.  I suspected that G-Force's release would be hard to beat.

Thanks to whoever uploaded this to the usual place.

I can only compare it to the LFN Pwnage (what's the G-force, sorry?).

This is the thread where G-Force's scripts/versions are discussed.  G-Force's offering already surpasses the Pwnage, in my opinion, so I'd like to see how the two compare.  I guess I'll have to wait until it becomes available through some other service than torrent.

I wonder if Adywan's made any progress on an HD version yet.  Even if an HD version isn't possible, a DVD-9 would probably be a substantial improvement all on its own.

You would have found that by browsing the thread :-D

You're right.  I have been following the thread, but I must have missed that post.  So much for my attempt to stay on topic!    A DVD-9 should still be a possibility though.
