Too many directors are fouling up their originals with all this colour-grading nonsense. It looks like I'll be sticking with more and more DVD originals at this rate...
I agree with you, and there was one hell of an argument when I and others brought this up at Blu-ray.com. For many there, directors can do no wrong...
I confess that I do actually like the new color timing for Alien. I watched both color timings back-to-back recently and to my surprise I found I preferred the new one. It seems more filmic, but less real world to me, so it depends on what you want.
I am in two minds about the new color timing of Bladerunner. At times it is closer to the workprint than the other cuts, but at other times it is too blue, and I find myself sick of the blue by the end of the film. When directors recolor-time they never seem to know when enough of one tint is enough. At least the other cuts have their original color timing on the five-disc set though.
All new transfers of Ridley Scott films seem recolor-timed, including the new master of Gladiator on the Anniversary Edition Blu-ray. At times the colors look amazing, but generally the new palette is too warm for my taste. The new master does not have all the DNR of the original though.
As far as Aliens go, both cuts will be on the same disc, so that implies that they will be seamlessly branched. I think it is a safe bet that they will both use the same color timing, and I am virtually certain it will be different. Apparently Alien and Aliens are undergoing the Lowry Digital restoration process, but the other two films in the quadrilogy are not.

I am increasingly doing the same. It might be disappointing, but at least it saves you money!

OK, I wanted to make a list here, but I'm just gonna direct you
Ah, that explains it. What a collection you have there, Harmy! :-D
ChainsawAsh said: I still don't notice much of a difference. The Complete Dossier is a little darker, and maybe a wee bit on the blue side, but nothing significant at all.
That is basically what I thought too. I posted the link for everybody for reference really. :-)

You mean, the people who think that adding Hayden Christiansen to ROTJ "nicely ties all 6 films together" ? *gag*
Those are the ones! :-) As it has been a while since I wandered on to a Lucas fan forum, I was actually surprised to see how determined people are to defend his' "vision" and his decision to release only the 2004 Special Editions on Blu-ray.
As usual, DVD Beaver has some comparisons.

Blade Runner is a pretty drastic change. I hated the new colors when I first saw the Final Cut, but when I watched the DC and FC back-to-back yesterday, I ended up preferring the FC color timing in some scenes. Others are too blue though.
Eight times on VHS? Did your tapes wear out?
Warrbler, right click on it and select view image. (You might not want to, though.)
edit - never mind.

I don't even know how I would aim an ice cream picture at someone if I wanted to ;-)
Figuratively? :-D
Funny picture! Making the pictures smaller like that is a good idea, as it allows people to ignore them if they want to do so. Hey, that was almost on topic!

which I actually find hilarious.
Which, granted, is always easy to do when not aimed at yourself or your friends.
I see your point, but while Bingowings' sense of humor might appear immature and relentless, I have not yet seen him attack anyone direct, with or without humor, which would be a different matter. I find Frink's ice cream images hilarious too, and they are not, I think, aimed at anyone in particular.

I can't really watch the Complete Dossier because of the fact that it uses Redux for the source of the original film.
That is a shame. Does it really trouble you that much? I see the color difference, but as color differences in transfers go it seems slight to me. I suppose you watch the old Paramount (NTSC) DVD.
I hope your wish for separate transfers for both editions is granted, but I would guess that there will be seamless branching using the same transfer. You might be lucky though!
Nerfherder said: we need to discuss this on EVERY blu-ray review site that's out there, as THAT is where the powers that be look to gauge public reaction.
If you decide to do this, be prepared for a backlash from diehard George Lucas fans, and by that I mean those who love all the 2004 Special Edition changes, believe that Lucas really did have a vision in mind all along and basically can do no wrong. I was monitoring a thread on Blu-ray.com that became pretty intense at times. Opposition will also come from those who maintain that directors can do no wrong, for whom the phrase as the director intended is both utterly indisputable and self-evidently conclusive; and for whom anyone who does not accept that this is so is automatically to be treated as an idiot. Perhaps some of you have the appetite for that kind of protracted online arguing, and if so I applaud you, but I have long since lost it.

KBO dear boy KBO.
Yes; keep your chins up, guys! I feel the same as Leanardo and FanFiltration about this summer; no motivation--none at all.
Is Bingowings from the UK? I always thought he was an American. Well, you learn something every day.
I interpreted Bingowings' post in the same way that C3PX did, but - like Frink - instead of condescending sarcasm I put the motivation down to Bingowingspeak and his usual irreverent sense of humor, which I actually find hilarious.
Bingowings, you really are something else. :-)
G-Force released ANH with the new script. DJ's new versions are still in the making.

Not to be pessimistic, but I'll believe it when I see it. Considering that The Last Emperor made it to Blu-Ray in 2:1 I suspect this information to be erroneous.
It is true that The Last Emperor was 2.00:1, but that release did not generate the kind of controversy that the change to Apocalypse Now did. I do not blame you for being pessimistic, and you might well be right, but I think that the information is probably accurate. We shall have to wait and see.

I wish he had given up Star Wars to other people after ESB and had concentrated on other things.
That is more or less how I feel. He should have left ROTJ - and any potential prequels - in the hands of Kurtz and others.
Bingowings said: I have already...sort of...done that one.
Oh, yes! I overlooked that because I was thinking of slightly different wording. I do not know how you find the energy to photshop of all of these posters. They take me ages and mine do not look half as good as yours. I was thinking about doing The King and Pie, but I cannot make it look funny.
I am waiting impatiently for your Live and Eat Pie poster, Bingowings.
No; search for Wookie Groomer. They were reposted in June/July, I think.

Wow no wonder many Star Wars fans get a bad rap if conversations like this keep degenerating into bickering - insane!!!
You are right. Bickering really should be avoided. As to the audio, lossless should mean lossless, so I do not think anyone can educate you there. :-)

Pie never noticed! Your idea was brilliant, pie the way.
