Which version/release of the Star Wars movies do you watch and why?
Time

SW

Arnie.d V8 -- no DVNR and somehow it reminds me of watching SW years ago

or Lee Thorogood's Technicolor version for an excellent attempted recreation of the original look

ESB

Adywan's big MKV of the '97 SE -- I love the colors and I don't care if they're authentic or not

ROTJ

Moth3r's PAL LD transfer because I like the way it looks somehow.  (Spence's edit is entertaining and very promising.)

Babylon 5 - Broadcast NTSC (4:3)? (Released)
Time

I feel your pain!  There are some 4:3 laserdiscs of Babylon 5, so you might try tracking down those.

A blu-ray release is probably out of the question because of the way the effects were done, but I’d pay for the series again if they released an improved set on DVD.  The existing NTSC DVDs are a bit better in terms of quality than the PAL, as I’m sure you know, but they’re 16:9 too.   This site is informative if anyone is interested in this.

STAR WARS: EP V &quot;REVISITED EDITION&quot;<strong>ADYWAN</strong> - <strong>12GB 1080p MP4 VERSION AVAILABLE NOW</strong>
Time

^^ Thanks!  I knew you had changed to editing in 720p a while back, but I haven't followed this thread regularly for a while, so I was wondering if you had changed back again.  A BD-25 sounds like a good idea. :-)

I hope your father recovers soon too.

I don't think it will affect playback.  Lee did mention having a problem with varying frame counts while he was editing, so I was thinking of running it through DGIndex myself.

I did have to mount the ISO with Virtual Clone Drive and extract the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders in order to burn the DVD.  There was no provision for a layer break.

Q is a measure of quality.  CRF is constant rate factor.  The smaller the number, the better the quality, the bigger the filesize. (18 is usually absolutely sufficient to ensure good quality.)

Using CRF means that you are choosing to output a certain quality (in terms of encoding) at the cost of unpredictable filesize.  When you use a two-pass mode, you can select the filesize that you end up with, but the encoder can only deliver the best quality it can for the filesize.  At the sizes that you are talking about, you might not notice much of a difference.

I agree that the screenshots look great! :-)

premier vs vegas?
Time

I use Vdub to convert to lossless AVI.  Open the Avisynth script pointing to your d2v in Vdub.

Video--> Compression --> Whatever (I recommend Lagarith lossless codec)

File--> Save as AVI

Before you load the Avisynth script in, you can add a line to the script converting your video to whatever colorspace you want to use in your editor (which is what I would do) and select fast recompress.  Alternatively, using full processing mode (which is the default setting) will allow you to use vdub's filters; this will trigger a conversion to RGB.

Sorry for the belated feedback, Lee.  I liked this very much.  The colors look really good for the most part.  Obviously there were a few scenes in which they did look a little off, but this is probably unavoidable when one applies a one-size-fits-all correction to the film, and this might well be the best that can be achieved with this approach.  I say encode your DVD and release it. :-)

I agree the ideal way to go would be colour correcting scene by scene, I've said this all along but at the same time I have my reasons for not doing it this way. :)

Lee, could you use a best fit setting for the film and tweak just the scenes where this setting results in undesired side effects e.g. the green on Artoo's stripes?  This way you could avoid having to correct the whole film scene-by-scene but still solve problems a best fit setting might cause.  Just a thought!

The rant's totally understandable.  People these days don't even show the minimum of concern for others.  Good job your mother's okay.  It sounds like it could have been far worse.

If it means that higher quality will result, the delay will be more than worth it.  You seem to work quickly anyway.  Two weeks is nothing.   :-)

Rendering from Vegas, what's the best way?
Time

Frink, there is actually a Pro version of Vegas Studio.  Sony's nomenclature can certainly be confusing at times! :)

Pagz, the procedure you followed, using Forced Film, might have left blended frames if the removal of the pulldown was not completely successful.  You might try selecting "Honor Pulldown Flags" when you first make your lagarith AVI (prior to editing) and writing a script to inverse telecine if none of Adywan's information helps you.

GOUT image stabilization - Released
Time

Or did I have to instruct it to use it somehow?

Yes; you did.  Video-->Compression-->lagarith lossless codec

(After this I also select Configure-->Mode:YV12 to be sure but it might not necessary with Fast Recompress.)

Then make sure Fast Recompress is checked under the Video tab.  If you use full processing mode, you will trigger a conversion to RGB.
