Ah, interesting. What's your reasoning behind Cinderella? Not knocking it, just wondering...

I just like it.  That's all.

I'd like to make clear, though, that the list is not in the order that I rate the films as art; it's in the order in which I am interested in preservations, which is not quite the same thing. I can put up with the Sleeping Beauty BD more readily than the Cinderella one, partly because it's still a treat to see it in 2.55:1.  Snow White is at the end because I like it but not as much as the others.  Bambi and Peter Pan are not on the list because I am under the impression that, while their releases have some issues, they did not suffer quite as badly as the others, so I'm not keen to share the costs of prints of those.

That's a good way to put it.  :-)

Here is a list that shows approximately my level of interest.

  • Cinderella
  • Sleeping Beauty
  • Pinocchio
  • Snow White

These are what I consider to be the best of "old school" Disney.  I have a little interest in Fantasia but am not keen to contribute to a preservation of it because of the problems that you listed.

ww12345 said:No, that is from a British seller, so it is really 350 GBP! :O

Sorry.  I thought the prints in that post were all from the same seller and, as the others were all priced in dollars and the symbols are next to each other on the keyboard, I assumed that Pinocchio was a typo.  (If they are from the same seller, I find it strange that the prices are listed in different currencies.)

Our PMs were initially about Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty, for which Poita intended to bid.  His latest PM drew my attention to your latest post, which at the time was #108.  Of the prints listed there, I would consider sharing the cost only for Pinocchio: the others have either not suffered quite as badly in their commercial releases (in my opinion) or simply do not interest me as much.

The Vaultbreakers Collection - Disney Preservations

Do you mean the LD is hard to find or the Limited Issue DVD?

I meant the DVD.  Hence the dvdcompare reference.  I shall edit my post for clarity though.

Considering those era Disney films were meant to work both 4x3 and matted to widescreen, the newer 1.75:1 release is probably just as reasonable (not matted on the left and right)  and better if you have a 16x9 TV.

I understand why you think the newer release might be better for a 16:9 television, but I find that most animations that are composed in 4:3 and cropped for theatrical release look awkwardly framed, as if a fixed amount has been cropped off top and bottom throughout the film, just so it can shown in widescreen.  That's why I'm interested in the old DVD.

Help: looking for... Star Trek 1 to 6 - HDTV, non DNR versions...

The theatrical cut of STVI was released only when the BD (and the DVD that accompanied it) came out.  The Widescreen Collection DVD does have three minutes of added material, which includes Operation Retrieve.  The Special Collector's Edition has the added material too but also added flashbacks to the mind-meld scene.

EDIT:  I see you guys have realized this.

Yes. There was at one point, but it's not very good.  I deleted it a while back.

The EE does not really harm the film, in my opinion, but I can see why people would want the theatrical.  Are there alternate takes like Amadeus?  If not, editing the BD would be the way to go.

Info: Films re-color timed on video releases

That would be interesting to see, but I've always found Colourlike's results, even on individual shots, to be unimpressive.  It's a shame that no one has done for PureImage what Darth Editous did for Photoshop's Selectivecolour, because PureImage usually produces great results. Making it work with 1080p is impractical though:  the files are just too big.
