I had so many great ideas for the ‘Muxing up Movie Quotes’ thread but now there’s nobody to appreciate them.
I had so many great ideas for the ‘Muxing up Movie Quotes’ thread but now there’s nobody to appreciate them.
Kind of building on the idea of the crackly Skywalker saber, I think it could be interesting if during Kylo and Rey’s duel on the Death Star, that Rey’s saber was almost becoming “overloaded” from the constant saber-clashing, and starts shorting out by the end of the duel. For example, in the shot where Rey sort of shakes her hand, you could have the saber fluttering in and out. Then finally, when Kylo keeps hammering away at Rey while she is on the ground, we could see the saber give out while Kylo is raising his to deliver the final blow. This would give a reason for why Rey grabs Kylo’s saber and stabs him with it, rather than just using her own.
I think it would add an interesting aspect to the duel that we haven’t really seen before, where our characters are dealing with a malfunctioning weapon. It also gives Rey a practical reason for why she inevitably builds her own.
I love this.
While we’re imagining up visual changes to make Rey more interesting in this film, I know we’d all have loved if she wore black throughout, but that seems like a big ask, VFX-wise. But what if she wore a black or even a gray outfit in the final scene? Or maybe black with white wraps? Might be more doable.
And I love this.
Could be some new things to chew on for a later version of Ascendant. 🤔
Jonh and MR, both of those new clips are absolutely incredible! 😃
For the castle clip- You don’t need to worry about the smoke and contrast anymore MR, I would say you’ve nailed that already. Same goes with the tracking, those pesky last few frames have been dealt with! Smoothing it out manually seems to have done the trick! I would say the clip is finished and good to go! (Unless anyone else picks up on anything) Nice work. 👍
Jonh, where do I even begin?! 😄 I compared each of those modified shots to the original to get a sense of how much had been changed, and I was totally blown away! Your work is nothing short of amazing. Not only have you completely hidden any evidence of Luke’s wig, but miraculously, you managed to remove the extra weight and age to his face gained between films and reshoots! This is Hollywood level expertise. 😉 👍
All that I would say is left to do now with Jonh’s footage is to merge it with Skenera’s de-blued footage he provided a while ago. Whether this means sending Jonh the footage to re-apply the effects over or perhaps, the other way around, I don’t know. Aside from that, does anything else remain in the ‘Rey Palpatine’ cut?
Edit:
Forgot about the potential of including a modified Vader’s castle shot from Rogue One. We’ll see how that plays out.
This is truly fascinating, I had never heard or seen anything about this guy before! Thanks Hoop!
One question for the experts out there, is there any reference to such a creature in any of the early drafts of ROTJ’s scripts?
Just wanted to let you know Dom that I haven’t forgotten about this work-print and I really appreciate you taking the time to provide the link.
I haven’t yet gotten around to giving it a watch, but I will certainly try to sometime this week, so expect a thorough post of jottings and notes I’ll take while I watch! 😃
Can’t wait to see how the Rey Nobody scenes play out!
I’m not at all ruling out a shot of Vader‘s castle to open us up on Mustafar. However, I think at worst it would be just fine to have the castle show up in the background. I think that’s a good inclusion even on its own.
+1
My thoughts exactly.
I’ve given this one more try with the image we have. I trimmed the mask back as hard as I could, retracked the movement, and added a smoke effect to match what’s there.
Let me know if the contrast is better?

Nice job MR!
In terms of blending the castle with the rest of the environment, this is the best pass yet! 👍
However, I’m not sure if this is just me, but it seems like the tracking on your second pass was a bit more precise, since closer to the end of this shot the castle seems to become a little floaty. Should be an easy fix though!
Keep up the good work!
I’m so glad they went and did that.
Although it’s a shame there’s no little message underneath like they did in TLJ with Carrie Fisher.
Did you do this? If you lay up the colour, I’ll give the tracking a go if you’d like.
I’m sure I speak for all of us when I say we’d love to see you give it a go, Movies Remastered!
Poppasketti had offered, but he’s a busy man so we’ll have to see!
As for the Vader castle shot, Hal, if you send me the shot and the castle still image (if you have it!) I can put it in my queue, but again, this may be a case of me kind of disappearing for another couple of months! So if anyone else gets to it first, by all means!
He’ll probably appreciate the burden being passed onto someone else. 😉
Not OT, but just noticed that in AotC, Obi-Wan calls the Jedi Temple the “Old Folks’ Home”… twice.
I’m so confused:
Probably a little too late now that V7 has been released, but I just remembered it so what the hell…
In the previous version of LOE (not sure if it’s been fixed yet though) right after Palpy says the line “one far younger and more powerful” and it fades to Anakin’s nightmare, for about 1 frame you can see a Coruscant building as a remnant of the theatrical transition.
If the scenes that are in the illustrated screenplay weren’t deleted, it would be a good film.
What do you gain from needlessly bumping threads from over a decade ago?
That’s an impressive colour change, but they still don’t look like stun settings. Stunners are either blue circles (like storm troopers in A New Hope, et al.) or what looks like a ball of electricity or lightning (such as Ezra’s stunner built into his first lightsaber).
It might be easier to replicate Exra’s stunner, rather than cutting the laser bolts completely and building the circles from scratch. If you can do the visuals though, I can help you get the corresponding audio in those scenes.
I’m tempted to experiment with using the classic ‘blue circle’ stun effect on the troopers in TROS now…
Wish me luck!
I really hope both Billy Dee and Donald Glover appear. It would make such a great show.
I second this.
A Lando show starring Donald Glover but narrated by Billy Dee Williams would be perfect, but that’s probably too much to ask for. 😉
Fennec Shand is a non-character. Remove her and her introductory episode (one of the worst episodes) and nothing changes. She’s so forgettable when she’s reintroduced in S2 and Din recognizes her I had to take a moment to figure out who she was.
Still more characterisation in that brief conversation she has in Chapter 5 than anyone across all three prequels.
They could’ve at least given her a unique design or something.
It’s all about the flashy looks, isn’t it? Obviously the quality of a character is assessed by their costume.
So… Have you gotten a phone call from ILM yet Poppasketti? 😉
Absolutely incredible Poppasketti! What a fantastic gift you’ve brought us for the holiday season! 😄
Version 2 of Ascendant is certainly gonna be a sight to behold. 😮
Somewhere halfway between yellow and orange.
How the hell am I only discovering this now?! Please tell me somebody on this site has copies of this!
As much as I adore my boy Nien Nunb, I would have appreciated it if the film had given him a definitive and impactful death rather than torture us by leaving his fate ambiguous.
The only solution would be to strip him of his armour in season 3.
Or do the opposite… Give Gideon a suit of Beskar armour!
This spambot bumped a thread inactive since 2006!
Sorry, couldn’t help myself!
If anyone is interested in what it would look like, here’s a quick mockup with some stock footage!
Just adding a suggestion here from Hal’s TFA thread - putting some rain on Exegol at some point would tie the location to Rey’s vision from Maz’s castle.
That seems perfect for making sense of that random ass dream sequence in TFA.
It’s a +1 from me!
Hey Chase the video link is broken, I’m curious what your fix was since that spot needed some cleaning due to the Chewy removal but yet we hear him! haha!
I took down the video since I’ve drastically improved the mix since I posted it. Essentially I completely scrubbed out the Wookiee noises from the scene.
I’m still waiting on Hal to find out if this mix is worthy of the final edit. I’m happy to post the new version if people really want to hear it though.
