Science Fiction or Space Fantasy - what is Star Wars
Time

Man, people have such rigid definitions of what is and isn’t sci-fi…

I guess the point I was trying to make that one time a couple days ago was that Star Wars isn’t and never was hard science fiction, and as such trying to find a scientifically plausible explanation for how anything works within the franchise is futile. Which is why I consider it fantasy within a sci-fi setting.

So I guess if I were to try and pigeonhole it into a genre, I can’t. It’s (soft) sci-fi. It’s space opera. It’s fantasy. It’s adventure. But I’d argue “sci-fi” is the least important of those to the franchise.

It’s absolutely not, however, hard sci-fi or speculative fiction or whatever label you want to put on stories that are about scientifically plausible technologies.

Warb, are you seriously bothered by the fact that the advertising for the first season with a female Doctor emphasizes the fact that the Doctor is female? What the fuck did you expect? It’s advertising designed to attract an audience,

a pro-feminist audience.

Don’t understand why that’s an issue. Any network will always want to increase their viewership, same as any company will always want to increase their profits (as for television, more viewers = more profit). This is the first woman Doctor, so why wouldn’t they try to target feminists (or pro-feminists, if that’s even a thing) in their advertising?

it’s not necessarily indicative of any stance the episodes may or may not take.

I didn’t say it was indicative of any stance that episodes may or may not take

Then what’s your point?

The creator has always said he had 4-5 seasons in mind but wasn’t sure which it would be. Sounds like he realized he had more than what season 4’s episode order was, but less than a full 5th season to go past thar, so he negotiated for an extended 4th season to end the show.

I’ll be sad to see it go, but as you say, happy that Esmail got to tell his story his way, right through to the end.

Only the very early ps3s could do that.

Only the 20GB and 60GB PS3 could play PS2 games, but every PS3 plays original PlayStation games.

Actually, the first batch of 80GB models had software emulation for PS2 backwards compatiblity, but it didn’t work as well as the physical PS2 hardware in the 20GB and 60GB models. The later 80GB models (when they dropped the USB ports from 4 down to 2) and beyond dropped that, too.

But yes, all PS3s are backwards compatible with PS1 games.

I don’t know what OT forum rules are, but I know fanedit.org has a pretty strict policy against editing streaming shows until they’re released in a purchaseable form (they might even need to be on DVD/BR) since you can’t “own the source” if it’s just streaming.

Which is to say, there’s no way to download it outside piracy.

The Place to Go for Emotional Support
Time

It is ridiculously expensive. And it’s in another town that I rarely go to so I’m not that worried about that. Unless it’s already been stolen.

I haven’t talked to her yet, I’m still at work, so I don’t actually know the status of my car. If I’m lucky the keys are with her phone at the police station. I’ll find out what’s going on in a few hours…

What? No, going for long (several hours long) walks is more or less a hobby of hers, and she’s gone over to that town a few times in recent months to do so. It just so happened that this time she lost her phone and the keys to the car she took to drive there. It’s not like she deliberately got rid of the phone and keys.

The only reason I freaked out so much was the fact that I got a text from her phone from a cop saying they found the phone but nothing about her, so I thought something might have happened to her. Apparently that wasn’t the case.

Still have to properly talk to her about it today and make sure that nothing actually happened beyond losing a few things and getting stuck in another town, though. Also not sure how/if/when she got back home, but she’s been active on Facebook since I heard from her last night. I’ll know more when I get home from work.

So my best friend and neighbor borrowed my car earlier today (hers is out of commission). Said she needed to get away and be alone - which is fine, she goes off on long walks through town by herself all the time (she’s the one I was walking with during the whole Labor Day fiasco).

I got a text from her phone an hour and a half ago…from the police department two towns over saying they found it.

I’ve been freaking the fuck out trying to find out if she’s okay. Been sitting out on the sidewalk outside our apartments the whole time chain smoking hoping she pulls into the lot. Called everyone I can think of, they’re calling people she knows whose numbers I don’t have, I’ve called three hospitals…

If I don’t hear anything soon, I’m gonna get a ride to go out looking for her. Already left a note on my door with instructions for her to go to my place and login to Facebook on my laptop to message me and let me know she’s okay if she gets back and I’m gone.

I’m really hoping she just shows up here soon, but I’m fucking terrified.

Yeah, but 720p and lower bitrate than what would be done for a bluray export.

The project was made at 720p, we’re not getting it in any higher resolution. Higher bitrate is what the hope is for a second MKV release, and possibly even BR compatibility for anyone who would want to make their own barebones ISO out of it.
