The Worst Scene/Sequence in Any Star Wars Film
Time

I feel like RJ thought he was coming up with the new “We’re all fine here, now, thank you…how are you?” scene, but didn’t understand what made that scene work so well.

FYI, that’s the scene “Who talks first?” reminds me of the most. I can 100% see that whole scene coming out of SW77 Han Solo’s mouth. I still think that whole thing was done very well and is what made me sit back, smile, and say “Star Wars is in good hands” within the first 5 minutes of TFA.

I still think that is mostly the case, though there have been plenty of missteps, several of which were in TFA, even. But that opening Poe/Ren scene wasn’t one of them for me.

The contention is dialogue in a Star Wars movie shouldn’t feel dated by earth standards. It took place in a galaxy far far away.

I understand that concept I just don’t understand how this dialogue is especially contemporary.

Probably because you’re young and don’t remember a time before it was normal to tell someone you were willing to hold.

Is it really so out of place that the concept of “holding” feels too modern?

Yeah. That’s a huge part of it. It’s also the overall timing and back-and-forth of the scene as a whole, but this is, whether you think it’s a dumb complaint or not, the single biggest problem I have with it (which extends to “…about his mother”).

As another example, I loathe “Droid please!” in TFA for very similar reasons (the phrasing is too contemporary so it takes me out of the galaxy far, far away). And “Boyfriend? Cute boyfriend?”

Mind you, this is coming from someone who likes TFA a lot and mostly enjoys TLJ, so these things don’t ruin the movies for me, but they still stick out like sore thumbs and I fuckin’ hate 'em.

But again, I don’t have the same issue with “Who talks first?” because that doesn’t feel “anachronistic” to me in the way the “I’ll hold” part does.

Is it really any worse than Leia saying Tarkin smells, to his face?

I think the difference here is Leia using language/phrasing that is less contemporary than what Poe uses.

Is “Hugs” especially contemporary though? I’m not sure I understand.

Nothing to do with the “hugs” thing. It’s the way the dialogue is written overall, and if you don’t see it, I’m not sure what to say. “Okay, I’ll hold” sounds like modern, quippy humor, while “I recognized your foul stench when I was brought on board” could be from whenever and not feel out of place.

I don’t, however, get this feeling from the “You talk first” bit at all. I’ve never understood the issue people have with that one.

You could try the DEED.

Despecialized Edition is the color-corrected Blu-ray release.

No it’s not, it’s the 35mm prints made 720P by using the Blu Ray.

What? No, it isnt. Please stop giving false information as fact. It’s the Blu-Ray color corrected with the SE changes removed through a variety of sources, only one of which is scans of 35mm prints. SW DEED has the least amount of 35mm material out of the whole DEED trilogy anyway. Hell, that’s why it’s only 720p - because Harmy didn’t have enough high-resolution material to seamlessly remove the SE editions at 1080p.

I don’t even know what “35mm prints made 720p using the Blu-Ray” means. Why would you use the Blu-Ray at all if you had 35mm source material? Okay, maybe if you had incomplete 35mm scans, but then why would you downgrade it to 720p if you have 35mm scans and a 1080p Blu-Ray?

Hateful 8 Roadshow Cut (Released)
Time

Well, someone uploaded a 720p version on MySpleen - I commented on the upload, but hadn’t started downloading yet, only to open up MySpleen today to find the torrent missing and a “notice” posted directly to me saying “NO NETFLIX CONTENT WITHOUT PRIOR APPROVAL.”

Not saying I’m the only one who got that notice, but damn, yelling at people for even commenting on the upload?

Star Wars: Remastered - A New Special Edition (* unfinished project *)
Time

Not a fan of using the same font for the title as the rest of the crawl (it’s never been done that way in any of the films, even though the title font is different between ANH/ESB/TFA and TPM/AOTC/ROTS/ROTJ; not sure about TLJ), and the GFFA looks too thin (though that may be YouTube compression), but otherwise it looks good!

Hateful 8 Roadshow Cut (Released)
Time

From the comments of that article:

The new version doesn’t have the blue 70mm TWC logo, Cinerama logo, overture, intermission, and the entr’acte (with the Crystal Gayle song).

Instead, there’s a recap in the beginning of 2~4 parts, showing a scene from the previous part. The Jesus cross opening titles and closing credits are shown in all 4 parts.

This version contains the chicken plucking scene from the 70mm roadshow, but contains the regular multiplex version of the Daisy guitar scene with the crank shot in the beginning.
What surprised me the most was that there’s an entirely new footage that I have never seen before, during the Channing Tatum flashback section. It’s not even in 70mm and regular versions.

And:

This “extended cut” never played in theaters. The roadshow had an overture, the use of the Crystal Gayle song “Ready for the Times to Get Better” and Daisy Domergue playing the guitar was in one uninterrupted take (none of which are in this). What this is is something entirely different.

General Star Wars Random Thoughts Thread
Time

I remember rumors that TFA would have seen Leia and the Republic racing the First Order to be the first to build a superweapon to wipe out the other side. I hated the idea at the time, but the more I think about it, the more I think that might have been a very interesting and worthwhile way to go about doing a “yet another superweapon” thing.

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)
Time

I think towne32’s “v2.6” had an ANH crawl edition, but he didn’t do the same for v2.7.

Easiest way is probably to download Harmy’s ANH Re-Specialized (1997 SE restoration) AVCHD and splice the opening shot of that into the DEED v2.7 - note that you’ll want to do the entire first shot, including the flyover, as the starfield is different.

Can't be Bothered: justifying Rey's power vs Luke's

Luke’s best friend mentions he’s a good pilot? Not in the movie I watch.

Also, we don’t see Luke pilot a ship until the end of the movie, so it’s necessary to set it up so it doesn’t come out of nowhere. When Rey says she’s a pilot as they’re running towards the Falcon, we’re still learning who she is. There’s no reason why we shouldn’t take her at her word, and it would have been silly to mention so earlier (“That’s Teedo. He has no respect for anyone. But I’m Rey and I fly ships good”).

“Sir, Luke is the best bush pilot in the outer rim territories” is in the movie.

Nope

Can either of you please provide a source for these claims?

Really guys?

Dom’s whole point is that the SE doesn’t count for him, and that scene is in the SE but not the original version, therefore it isn’t in the movie that he watches.

Everyone on the same page now?
