SE Changes
Time
I didn't really think it was that big of a deal to include it, especially since I forgot all about it until I was reading the list.

I'm going to a high school football game now so I'll be back with Jedi in the morning.

--EDIT--

BTW, I meant the "AARGH!" vs "UUH!" change, not the Star Destroyer change.

THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK

It seems as if most of these changes are audio ones, so let's get to it.

- BAD: The old one had the whole "Jaws" thing going where they never showed it very well. Really cool and scary. But now....
- MEH ("Thanks, 3PO"): I actually got so used to this line that it scared me when I was re-watching the OT for the first time in a while that it wasn't there...
- MEH (smoke): Never noticed it...
- GOOD: But they could have at least made it consistent...
- BAD ("You're lucky ...."): I loved the "you didn't taste very good" line!
- GOOD (clearer dialogue): I could never hear it before!
- BAD: Unnecessary CGI, but I don't mind it too much.
- BOTH: Good because Cloud City needed it, bad because it REALLY overused some CGI...
- BAD: City didn't really need to be opened up IMHO.
- BAD: WTF? I cant even hear her (Leia) now...
- BAD (during announcement): Just pointless.
- GOOD AND HORRIBLE: Good in that he looks solid now, bad because of the F'N SCREAM! (fixed in the 04 DVD)
- NEUTRAL: What's the big deal over "Alert my star destroyer..."?
- BAD: George, we don't need to see everything in the world that happens, especially when it interrupts the flow of the movie.
- GOOD (see ANH): Funny that he wasn't given credit theatrically but was on video...hehe...

That wraps up Empire. I'll have Jedi up later.

SE Changes
Time
I thougt this would be the better place to put this and not in general discussion.

Here's my thoughts on each change in the SW Trilogy SE, as http://www.theforce.net/swse/ lists them. It's the most complete listing I could find.

- GOOD: I actually quite like this change. I just think it looks cooler.
- BAD: Completely unnecessary. The original scene worked perfectly.
- BAD: See above.
- GOOD (referring to general landspeeder shots): I never liked the damn green glob.
- BAD: Why is smoke coming from the chimney when he lives on a planet that's hot as hell?
- GOOD: Kinda nice to see the Death Star move.
- BAD (General Mos Eisley changes): The near-ghost-town feel was so much more atmospheric...
- MEH: Good in that the original shot sucked, bad because those "scurriers" are stupid...
- BAD (general Cantina changes): Mainly the replacement of Wolfman while Penis-Mouth still remains...
- HORRIBLY WRONG AND SHITTY: Do I even need to say why? The scene lost its entire reason for being when this happened....
- BAD: Everything in this scene was covered in the Greedo scene. Plus not seeing Jabba till Jedi was much cooler. Plus the CGI sucked and still (2004) sucks.
- BAD: Overuse of CGI.
- BAD: The update of the explosion was OK, but the Praxis ring was a bad idea IMHO.
- UNDECIDED: I kinda like both versions...
- BAD (thrusters): Overuse of CGI again...
- UNDECIDED: Can't remember the original shot...
- GOOD: Gives him something to look at. Don't think there was anything before.
- GOOD: Much improved over the original. Has a more "earthy" feel.
- EXCELLENT: The single BEST CHANGE of any of the SE's! Makes his death (more) meaningful.
- BAD: Overuse of CGI...yet...again....
- BAD: Overuse of CGI...the old shot was fine...
- GOOD: Never liked the straight line before...
- GOOD (general DS attack changes): Much more exciting and tense than the original.
- BAD: See the destruction of Alderaan.
- GOOD: Never noticed this was a change...that's what every one should have been, at least seamless enough so if you'd never seen it before you wouldn't be able to tell.
- GOOD (JEJ gets credit): Why wasn't he credited before?

Well, that's it for now; later I'll post for ESB in this same thread and then ROTJ later on.

Now thats fucking crazy. Come one what about the new Mos Isley, expanded cloud city, new wampa, new sarlacc, matt line deletion, improved Yavin shots, improved lightsabers, new Biggs scene, and the deletion of that horrendous ewok song. Plenty of really awsome changes that make the movie better. For every bad change there are 50 good ones.

Mos Eisley: Bad, had more of a ghost-town feel to it before that was more ominous.

Cloud City: Good, always liked this, but they needed some window-consistency there...

Wampa: Bad. More tense and ominous not seeing him much.

Sarlacc: Bad. WTF is with that beak?

Matte Lines: Good until they missed 93 of them.

Yavin: Split on these...some good and some bad

Lightsabers: See MATTE LINES.

Biggs: VERY good, the biggest change in the SE that I think improves the film...hell, the ONLY change that improved the film.

Ewok Song: Always liked it, but I do like the SE song better, it works more as an ending to the saga.

DEATH STAR ATTACK (since you forgot this): I actually like the SE version a lot more, it's more tense and exciting. I actually almost got annoyed watching the OT version of this with all the slowness and roughness of it and then I realized what I was thinking and slapped myself.

mp3 Editing?
Time
Is there any software for mp3 editing? Here's the scenario: I downloaded 3 Doors' Down Away from the Sun CD, but alas, the last song has 30 seconds of silence before the song starts. Any way I can get rid of that? I only have Roxio Easy CD Creator to work with and that doesn't let me do stuff like cut the beginning out of music. Anyone know how I can fix this?

Info: OT Bootleg DVDs

Might I suggest:

Buying/renting the official DVDs and using the transfers as reference for balancing your LD transfers. I'm not saying use the transfers replacing the SE scenes with the LD scenes, I'm saying color-correct/grade the LD transfer using the DVD as a reference.

Maybe rather than use VE on laserdisc use DVE on DVD, it might end up looking better.

@MeBeJedi - A suggestion for releasing your set:

Two versions for the trilogy-

1) The Standard Set
Specs -
Non-Anamorphic Video
PCM Audio
Commentary
Full Menus

2) The "Home Theater" Set
Specs -
Anamorphic Video
Dolby Digital 5.1 Audio
No Menus or Extras

Just a suggestion, and after the credits roll (all the credits) on both versions, put a DVD credit section, like "DVD encoded, authored, and designed by MeBeJedi using x software and y hardware" or something like that.

Raiders of the Lost Ark - Special Edition?
Time
Okay, here's the BIG DIFFERENCE between the disease known as Lucasism and normal directors. Lucas completely stamps out the original versions of his films (THX 1138, Star Wars Trilogy). Other directors don't usually. Spielberg's E. T. The Extra-Terrestrial DVD contained THE THEATRICAL VERSION as well as the Special Edition. He didn't pretend E. T.'s original version did not exist, but he updated it anyway. I don't give a rat's ass if they do this to Raiders of the Lost Ark, because I have a pristine Lowry-restored official DVD of the 1982 theatrical version sitting on my shelf as we speak. He didn't stamp the original out. So let him do what he wants. Who cares. You have your film in the medium you wanted it in. I guarantee if GL released the original cuts of the Star Wars movies, nobody would care if he put out the SE's as well, as long as the originals were out, and no-one would criticize him as badly as they do for making the SE.

THX 1138: 4EB
Time
I'm looking for anyone who has a rip of Electronic Labrynth - THX 1138:4EB, Lucas' student film, from the Director's Cut 2-disc DVD up as a torrent anywhere. I have the DC XviD rip, and I'd like to see this student film but feel paying for the DVD just to get that when I already have the film is a little bit of a waste. Can anyone help me out?

Right, the menus. I personally don't like to think of them as something a fan made, but as a DVD of the movie, and when the fact that it's a bootleg is called to my attention (i.e. the "MeBeJedi's New Hope" menu name) it detracts from the whole experience. In my own humble opinion, of course.

On another note, and this may have been covered several times in the past, what exactly is Laserman doing with his set that differentiates it from others?

Here's my thought on "branding" your set: I like to watch movies, even if they are bootlegs, as if they were not. It detracts from my viewing experience, IMHO, if the fact that it is a bootleg is called to my attention. Therefore, I am inherently against "branding" your version at all. BUT, it is your set, so do whatever the hell you want!
