The Official 2006 Discs Will Be No Better Than What We Have!
Time
It's amazing how one announcement can turn so many respected and respectable people into assholes.

I happen to think zombie84 is correct - it makes perfect sense. Besides, regardless of whether it's a transfer taken from the same master as the laserdiscs or the 1993 cleanup for the special editions ... IT'S GOING TO LOOK A SHIT-LOAD BETTER THAN WHAT WE HAVE NOW. So stop bitching, honestly. When it's released, if it's a fuckup like the 2004 DVDs were, *then* you can start bitching, although many will still have the pissed-off "they got what they want, and they're STILL bitching" attitude.

So can we please start acting civil around here again? I never in my life expected an announcement with such great potential as this one to turn people *here* into blithering idiotic assholes, but it has. I suggest that everyone who's had a bad attitude since Wednesday's announcement take about a week or at least a few days away from these boards to cool off, then come back. I won't be naming any names, but you should know who you are, and everybody else certainly does.

Aside from that, I'm loving the covers.

I've been bored out of my skull today, and going through all these old posts, I saw this one and remembered I thought the same thing too - I just made my own version after reading that, and if I ever figure out how to host a full-res version I'll post it for everyone to have. But for now, here's a smaller image:

I actually liked LFL's THX 1138 covers (both versions), but I agree that other than that and Tucker, they have a very bad track record with covers (I'm including the Indy DVDs in that statement as well - they were awful covers, too).

By the way -

Not sure if this thread is worth anything, and if it isn’t then just let it die - I thought I’d do this for fun and to see what others think, plus possibly inspiring future preservation projects when this isn’t what we get (and it won’t be.) For the record, this is what I think we’ll get:

  • Optional crawl selection for SW
  • The 1993 Surround remixes for all three films
  • 16:9 widescreen
  • English, Spanish, French subs
  • Menus
  • The exact same discs we got in 2004, repackaged once again as disc two of this set

So anyways - any suggestions? Ideas? Again, if this is a pointless thread, ignore it, but - it’s here if it’s not pointless.

24 - Day 5
Time
I warned there were spoilers, for Christ's sake - is that a problem? The episodes have already aired, you know.

And if you mean why am I bothering to give a spoiler warning for episodes that everyone's seen (which I don't think was what you meant, but I could be wrong), it's because there are people - I know a few - that are waiting for the DVD to come out that don't watch it when it airs on TV, and if they come here, I don't want to spoil surprises (badly-done though they may be) for them.

24 - Day 5
Time
I personally think this is the worst season by far. It peaked during Season 3, and has gone downhill since.

SPOILERS FOR DAY 5!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What with the casual, swat-of-a-fly killing of the only character besides Jack to be around for all 5 seasons (Mike Novick was absent in season 3 and most of 4), the almost arbitrary killing of one other such character and one to have been around since season 2, the increasingly far-fetched plot twists (the President, that fucking pussy, was the man behind everything? Give me a break - his character totally changed once that revalation is made), and the over-used plot "twist" of Jack going rogue and CTU trying to catch him only to realize that they "need" him again show that the writers are definitely making this up as they go along. It's poor plotting, and the reused storylines are really starting to bug me. It feels like an entirely different show from what we all fell in love with in Season 1.

Having said that, I'll still finish out this season at least - these last few episodes will determine whether I tune in for Season 6 or not, though.

I also have The Bachman Books - while RAGE is an amazing book, I can see why it's not published anymore, though I think that's stupid and it should be put back out there. It's a great book and it's too bad many people will never get to read it. THE LONG WALK is another good King-as-Bachman novel, in my opinion.

"the writer had been away from that world for too long, and just couldn't find his way back."

I disagree on that point - there was a 6-year gap between 4 and 5, the same amount of time between 3 and 4. The problem was the van hitting him, which A) changed the story tremendously, especially in DT7, and B) changed *him* too much to finish the story the way it would have finished before the "incident."

However, like I said, I enjoyed all of them, though I do agree on the weak ending - while the rest of that book was very good, the resolutions of major plot threads were just ... weak.

The Dark Tower
Time
I just started re-reading this series, and even though I know every twist and turn of it, it still grips me the whole way through ...

For those that don't know, THE DARK TOWER is a 7-volume fantasy series by Stephen King, begun in 1970 and finished in 2004 (writing, at least - the first volume was published in 1982). It is described by many as King's magnum opus - while the series itself is 7 novels, most of his other works tie in in some way - some very directly, such as THE STAND, 'SALEM'S LOT, THE EYES OF THE DRAGON and INSOMNIA.

The general consensus by many fans is that the first four volumes - THE GUNSLINGER, THE DRAWING OF THE THREE, THE WASTE LANDS, and WIZARD AND GLASS - published between 1982 and 1997, are excellent, some of King's best writing, and, of course, the best of the series, while the final three - WOLVES OF THE CALLA, SONG OF SUSANNAH, and THE DARK TOWER - all published in 2003 or 2004, and written after King's accident, were quite poor in comparison to the first four, and that the ending was badly done. I, on the other hand, think the only two truly weak volumes were SONG OF SUSANNAH and WIZARD AND GLASS, while the others were some of the best writing I've ever read.

I was just curious as to how many people here have read these books or not, as they are really, in my opinion, the best fantasy written in a LONG time. I highly reccommend them, even if you're not a fan of King. I also reccommend that, if you start reading them, start with the revised edition of THE GUNSLINGER - the original is hard to get into, and is in many respects very inconsistent with the way the story evolved in the ten years between the writing of volume one and volume two. Although that may be akin to Lucas' redesigning of the originals to fit the new films, but that's a different debate entirely.

Anyway, has anyone read these books? If so, what did you think?

Everyone seems to be a bit harsh toward Darthvong here ... I hope you aren't getting a bad impression of the site from that, Darth.

Besides, honestly, if you're that dead set against the style of his cover - make your own. Sure, constructive criticism is good, but when you're telling someone to change the whole idea behind their cover as you were, OCP, that's kind of like a kick in the nuts to the designer. Not to mention phrases like "Use an original trilogy image there, please" make it seem like you think he's designing the cover specifically for you. He doesn't even have to release it when he's done if he doesn't want to - he's making it for himself, and being kind enough to make it available to those who want it afterwards. Finally, things like these complaints are easily altered in Photoshop if you so choose.

Basically what I'm trying to say is, don't act like he's the one doing it wrong, when all he is is doing it his way. Let him do it his way, and if you don't like it, change it for yourself or just don't download it.

Fair enough?

And Dayv - you know that avatar choices are limited, so don't make it out to be a personal insult if someone uses one you designed and uploaded - ask them kindly. I know I got chewed out twice by Shimraa for this, and if he hadn't had a "you should have known it was mine" attitude about it, I wouldn't have been bothered by his request at all.

I'm sorry if I'm offending anyone here - I'm just trying to get people to be less aggressive towards new members, and more welcoming.

And on that note - welcome to OT.Com, Darthvong!

I've been waiting so long for Gaius to finally blossom into a true villain, and here it is.

I must say though, that I felt they lost a LOT of potential character stuff in that one-year gap - they've been doing these large gaps recently, and I don't like it. They're losing a LOT of character-development potential, which is what this series has always been from the beginning - a character drama. It seems like that's becoming lost in the let's-jump-ahead-to-the-good-parts attitude.

What about RENT?

I just watched the film version of RENT. First, let me say I've never seen the show, and the film was my first introduction to it. I loved it.

However - I watched the deleted scenes, and I feel that this could do with a small bit of editing.

Specifically, I think "Goodbye Love" should be reinstated in its entirety, and the original back-to-the-stage ending should be restored. I personally don't think "Halloween" is too necessary, but it's a good song, so if it was added back in, that would be nice as well.

I was just wondering if there's a "market" for this, so to speak, and if there is, if someone with know-how would be willing to give it a shot.

Another possible idea - though i doubt this is feasible - could be to reedit it completely as a rock opera with no dialogue, but the way the film is structured, this is probably impossible.

I was thinking about that, but i thought no one here would like RENT. Thats an edit i would love to see and have I Should tell you be after La Via Bohemn B instead of in the middle cuz it ruins the pacing.

No, I don't think ISTY should be moved - in the commentary, Columbus reveals that the original show had it that way and it didn't work near as well, so they moved it just before it opened on Broadway and it's been there since 1996.
