Watchmen Film
Time

It was a 12-part miniseries in the '80s - you can find it as a graphic novel now (just called "WATCHMEN," by Alan Moore), though it's been sold out at most bookstores since TDK came out, I'd order online.

It's up on Demonoid, as well, if you don't mind reading on your computer screen.

And I disagree with DAYV, I'd read the graphic novel first, it really is that good.

Just got back from seeing it in IMAX ...

... wow. It was absolutely amazing. I wish the entire movie could have been shot in IMAX.

Sadly, the non-IMAX scenes were sent through the same God-awful processing they use for the "IMAX Experience" versions of movies where they crop it to fit the screen (I'd hoped they wouldn't because the 35mm scenes were letterboxed), but it wasn't a big deal, and it just served to make the IMAX shots look all the better for it.

The shot of Batman standing on the destroyed building's rubble while firemen put out the blaze behind him is instantly iconic, and when you see it in IMAX, the feeling is amplified by about fifty.

If you can, see it in IMAX. Definitely.

Robert A. Harris on Film Grain and Blu-Ray
Time

And that's fine. Let it look the way he wants.

But don't shaft the people who grew up with it the way it *was*. Release the original version, everything intact and unaltered INCLUDING GRAIN, alongside his squeaky-clean version. Then everyone'd be happy.

About grain in general, you're right - but it'll be SUBSTANTIALLY harder to convince people that grain is supposed to be there when there's STILL such opposition to widescreen movies (Why's there be black bars on my TV's? I can't see the rest'a the movie!) and so many people thinking anything digital MUST be better.

So am I the only one that got REALLY excited during the "Watchmen" trailer?

Here's a link for anyone that didn't see it: Watchmen

Oh no, you're not the only one, but I'm too worried that "300"-man is going to make it all style and no substance in streamlining it to fit a 2-hour running time. While it looks visually stunning, I'm nervous - but I will certainly see it.

the last few pixar movies been pretty hit and miss for me..

monsters inc-miss, finding nemo-miss, incredibles - hit,

cars - HUGE HIT, ratatouille- miss............and now this....... wall-e.....

it's the first pixar movie that made me ambivalent............

You didn't like Nemo or Ratatouille, but you liked Cars? Seriously? Cars was ... well ... pretty awful in my opinion, I honestly don't get what people like about it, at all.

I will agree on Monsters and Incredibles - I never cared much for the former, and The Incredibles was ... well ... damn good (ha! And you thought I was going to use a pun).

But back to my original question(s):

What about "Nemo" did you dislike, and what about "Cars" actually worked for you? Just curious really.

As long as your video editing program has multiple video tracks, this will work. I put the 1080p version on video track one, then above it, on video track two, I put a 480p version of the same film, frame accurate to the HD version. I then set video track one to be invisible, and just made sure that every change I made to my visible 480p footage, was also done to the 1080p version. Basically, every edit you make is made twice, then when it was time to encode, I set video track one to be visible, and video track two to be invisible. It still slows things down excessively, but only during the final encoding stage. I'm not sure if this information may be helpful to you, or how stressful, if implemented, it would make editing with all the color correction/fx layering you do (which I would imagine takes up more than two video tracks). But I thought you might find a way to temper the method to make 1080p editing work for you.

Interestingly, this is basically how movies are edited. A 480p version is edited on a computer that has timecodes stamped into it. Once that's done being edited, it's taken to a ridiculously powerful workstation, and there the 480p version is recreated identically in 2k or 4k, then printed to film. The 480p edit is an "off-line" edit, and the 2/4k edit is the "on-line" edit.

Just a little tidbit I thought may be interesting.

4K is on the way, IMAX theaters are supposed to convert this year

Oh, PLEASE tell me that's not true! IMAX footage that's edited digitally needs to be scanned in at 8k to preserve all the detail (IMAX scenes for "The Dark Knight" were scanned in at 8k, while all 35mm scenes were done in 4k) - if IMAX, a format that touts itself as being the highest resolution currently possible, trumping even all them newfangled "digital formats" (which it is and does) converts to *4k* digital projection, it'll be completely pointless beyond being something projected on a giant screen, which you can get anyway if you go to a movie theater and sit in the 4th or 5th row (I saw WALL-E that way and I didn't have to strain my neck, but still could see nothing but movie :-D).

Notice that the security recordings holograms in Ep III have color.

Which is why I said in TPM and AOTC the holograms were monochromatic, but I didn't mention ROTS.

And Palpatine's not *that* grey - just give him a hint of his "Jedi" color, which would further help the connection to ROTJ Emperor and distance it from the much-greyer ROTS Emperor, which is what we're going for, right?

The one suggestion I have for the hologram is adding some color back into it. The vast majority (if not all) of the OT holograms have some color to them, like Leia in ANH, Luke in ROTJ, and the original Emperor in ESB. Unfortunately, just like in TPM and AOTC, Lucasfilm forgot about this when they re-did the Emperor's hologram for ESB, and now it's a monochrome blue. Do you think you might be able to bring some slight skin tone back to it? That might also help it look a bit like ROTJ Emperor and less like ROTS Emperor.

STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 REVISITED ADYWAN *1080p HD VERSION NOW IN PRODUCTION

To extract the ISO:

1) Download WinRAR

2) Open the first file (should end in "part01.rar" or something similar) using WinRAR, then extract the ISO to wherever you want (it will automatically extract it from all of the parts, be patient and wait till it's all done)

Now, when I say "using WinRAR ... extract the ISO," when you open "........part01.rar" (or whatever it's named, but the first part) in WinRAR, you'll have the option to "Extract To..." - that is what you want. Save the ISO to wherever you want, desktop, documents, whatever. Then, using whatever program you have at your disposal, burn the ISO to a Dual-Layered DVD.

You might need it if you're burning the DVD-9 to dual layer media using ImgBurn.

BUT, here is what you need to do:

1) Download WinRAR

2) Open the first file (should end in "part01.rar" or something similar) using WinRAR, then extract the ISO to wherever you want (it will automatically extract it from all of the parts, be patient and wait till it's all done)

3) If you're using Nero, or some other burning program, use "Burn image to disc" or similar, select the ISO file, and burn it to the Dual-Layered DVD

4) If you're using ImgBurn, you'll need to extract the ISO using the method described by Kurgan with DaemonTools, then take the files from VIDEO_TS_fixed.rar and drop them into the VIDEO_TS folder, REPLACING the existing files that are already in the folder. Then, you can either make a new image (someone else will have to walk you through that), or use Nero to burn the VIDEO_TS folder to Dual-Layered media.

Or, if you're sick of trying to deal with all this, PM me and I can put you on my PIF chain.
